Glacial Lake Walk

We had a great evening last night. So glad we live close to such scenery! We are much closer to this lake now so no excuse not to go more often! It is the water supply for the city of Anchorage and a great place to go. You can kyak on the lake or ride bikes around it. It is almost 10 miles long and fed by a glacier. You can just see the snow in the background.

It is 200 feet deep! It is on Athebaskan land and also has a Russian Orthodox influence from several centuries ago. There are still Russian Orthodox onion dome churches in this area. Alaska history is so unique!

It feels SO good to get out of town. This is only 30 minutes away from our location now. It was a warm day but cooled down with a storm blowing in as we got there. There were waves on the lake so it sounded like being at a beach!

We walked quite a ways up the beach through driftwood and rocks of all different colors. People have built huge driftwood teepees which are 10-15 feet tall all along the lake on both sides. I assume this is just something kids do but these are impressive structures now and quite sturdy!

There is a very nice gravel road (no vehicles allowed) along one side of the lake and extending up toward the glacier. We need to get good bikes again and try that! I am not in shape to go 12 miles each way but I would go a ways and enjoy the scenery. We could also go kyaking here!

Lovely! The shots are great. Another dream to build: To go there some day.

Awesomeness!
Mojalefa.

Yes, thank you! I hope you do.

Jessica, do you EVER see the sun? Oh, we already talked about that, sorry....
Yes, gorgeous! Serene! A treat to have that close to the daily grind, whatever that grind consists of....
Gives me a great idea, too: we've got some pretty gorgeous scenery around here (central Arizona, if you don't remember). This isn't the best time of year to photograph but I can still get some good shots.... Hmmmmm
I'll get back to you on this idea..
Tim

It was sunny all day until just when we got there. We are getting the tail end of a tropical storm out of the Pacific. It is actually sunny right now though the wind is howling as we get a break in the storm! It was also late in the evening when we were at that lake.

It has been sunny most of the summer. Did you see my posts earlier this summer with these pictures?

This was last summer.

Here is another one from last summer

....and right now we're in the midst of our "monsoon" — terrible misnomer — where it rains nearly every afternoon or evening. Not the best time for photos.... Makes for glorious sunrises, though! I must have 300 of them! Nope, not going to post them, you'll just have to take my word for it....
Tim

Thank you for showing us that beautiful scenery Jessica.

Derek

You are most welcome.

Absolutely breathtaking! I love seeing about places I may never get to see in person.
Thanks!

Kyle Ann

Thanks! I hope you do.

Beautiful, thanks

You are welcome!

Hi, J,

Beautiful. Hope you're having a great day. Becky

We are off to a going away party for family friends who are retiring and moving south. It is at the lake I was going to earlier this summer. It got sunny, though we are in the tail of a tropical storm off the Pacific. So, the wind is howling but at least it isn't pouring rain. I am icing down my ankle so I can go after making cole slaw to take to the pot luck. Cole slaw with Alaskan cabbage, rainbow carrots, onion and apple.

Hey, J,

Coleslaw? Lots of grating unless you have a food processor, lol. God love yah, girl. Cabbage is real good for you. Have a great time and rest that ankle.

No cartwheels, k?

Becky :P

I just slice it thinly and then chop it the other way. Thanks!

Hi, J,

I'm lazy tonight. That seems like way to much work for me even if it is not. I'm not a big fan of the kitchen at the best of times. However, we do have to eat.

I just looked at your time zone for Alaska. It says it's 4:22 PM your time, and 8:30 PM my time. Enjoy your party, and your coleslaw, Jess.

May your websites generate and monetize wealth while your enjoying yourself. Remember no cartwheels, lol.

Becky

We had a good time! It was a nice evening on the lake. After the party Aaron and I walked a bit around it. Then went to the store and then home.

I am off to check Amazon and Analytics now. I had a sale yesterday after 5 or 6 days of nothing. It is strange I was doing so well and when I decide to really work harder everything drops off and I stop getting sales. You just never know in this business since there are so many variables!

I was excited to break the $100 in one month mark last month! I had almost $120 I think. ($70 of that is from WA referrals). I am sure whatever I am doing now will pay off later even if I don't set any new records this month.

Love the scenery. Great pictures. There is so much to do and see in this world of ours.

Yes! There sure is!

Sounds like a beautiful place, Jessica. Better than those shipboard glacial tours!

Yes! There are large glaciers you can drive to here also! They are gorgeous!

Hey Jessica,

Wow... so beautiful! I'll bet the lake is very cold though.

I would definitely do some kayaking there. Is there a dive shop there by chance? Ummm, the mountains are huge... it looks very peaceful there.

Thank you for sharing this. I live in a place with no mountains close by... there is a lake nearby but so crowded in the summer.

Have an awesome weekend Jessica.

Monica

No, no diving. There aren't even any fish since it is dammed up to provide water for the city.

It is cold water! I love that there are places here that are not crowded! I am so glad we got out there last night. It is raining now and will be for quite awhile since we will be getting the tail end of a tropical storm!

You too Monica!

Right... you did mention, it is water for the city. Wow... I'll bet the visibility in the water must be excellent.

That must be the storm heading in Alberta ...

Yup, will do.. thanks!!

Monica

Do you mean Alaska? We get quite a few of these in the fall. After tropical storms move north through the Pacific they end up either in Japan or here or both.

I think the water is actually a bit silty since it comes from a glacier. Most rivers from glaciers here are silty since the glacier grinds up rock.

We get cold weather from the north.

Oh, that makes sense. I never thought of the glacier grinding up rock. Nature is very interesting!!

Have an awesome Sunday, Jessica.

Monica

Incredible and beautiful! You are so blessed to live so close to such scenery Jessica where you can enjoy the great outdoors glacial wilderness!!! Keep cherishing it!

Yes! This is the first time we have gone more than 10 or 15 minutes away this summer!!! Uggggg. I am desperately wanting to get out while there is still a little summer left. Between work and health problems and doing what everyone else wants, I just don't get out much! It is bit of a tragedy for me since I LOVE it so much and it really helps me feel healthy and happy. My husband has agreed to help me get out as much as possible now. This outing was actually his idea!

Keep it up, and make the most of the rest of the summer Jessica!

I will! We want to go fossil hunting next! There is a location about an hour away for that!!

Whoa!!

Well plant (fern) and other fossils...not dinosaur tracks!

That's still awesomely interesting!

Yes! I haven't been there since I was a kid. I barely remember it and can't wait to go back!

We are lucky there are so many amazing things to do around here. My Mom and her boyfriend go out and get fresh shrimp all the time just an hour and a half south of here. The shrimp are HUGE...like prawns, and SO good. I haven't done that yet!

We need to get out to the U-Pick farm also...and go blueberry picking in the mountains...so much to do and we hardly get out of town! It drives me insane!

:):)
