An Unexpected and Useful Benefit from Sales

There is a unique benefit to getting sales that I have noticed but not seen anyone else mention here. I suppose this primarily applies to Amazon and other large affilate networks.

I get sales for many products I do not review and have never even seen before. I have seen some very interesting products purchased through my site. Out of curiosity I will go check them out to see how much they cost (how much commission I will get :) and what they are. There have been several instances where the same product has been purchased multiple times. When this happens I really take notice. I start to wonder, "Is this a really great product I should try?", "Is this a product I should review?". There are a few such products I want to order and try for myself. My readers are probably on to something and I want to try it out!

This has happened with several cat products which I intend to try. Just now I saw someone purchased a blogging planner. It never occured to me that blogging planners (actual books) existed but apperently this is a big thing. There are a variety of them on Amazon and they look pretty neat.

I never thought when I started my sites that I would find all kinds of interesting products just by seeing what other people purchased through my links. That is why I love being an Amazon Associate, there are never-ending opportunities for sales from a mind boggling selection of items.

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for the share.

Best wishes,

Michael

Thanks Michael.

Recently I too started to get sales from Amazon Associates. However, none of the sales were from direct links from my websites. None of the orders were from items related to my recommendations. Is there a way to find out from which post or website of mine the customers entered Amazon Associates. That would help me to promote that post. Orders for these unrelated items are a great benefit.I am happy with Amazon Associates except for their policy of payments in 60 days.

If you are in your Reports screen on Amazon Associates, there is a drop down menu for "Tracking". I keep it turned to "All" but you can choose to see the sales and clicks from just one of your websites at a time. Just check the box of the website's stats you want to see.

Then at the bottom of the screen there is a link that says "Link Type Performance". If you click that, it will show you how many clicks came from your product links vs banners (if you have any). I am not sure if there is a way to see even more detail.

Thank you very much. This is very helpful.I am trying to figure out after months of no results in Amazon, the last two weeks I am getting almost daily small orders. Want to figure out what I did right

Are you using Google Analytics? If you see a spike in traffic to a certain post or have more traffic in general to a certain post that might be a clue as well. I love using it since it shows if traffic comes from Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wealthy Affiliate etc. etc.

You can see how many visitors you have to each of your pages, how long they staid on the page etc.

Thanks again.I had not checked Google Analytics for a while.
I will do it now!

This has happened to me a lot, especially at Amazon. I think it's the norm for more sales to be things I didn't promote.

A funny story about this goes back to when we first started selling Amazon products. Kelly was doing a lot of book reviews on books about natural building methods. One of the first products that showed up on our Amazon affiliate list was a red negligee.

Ha ha! You never know what people will buy!!

Okay, now I am totally looking up blogging planners!

Yes!

Very interesting to know.

It is good to hear that there are side benefits that are not originally intended when we start out, but come to our notice if we pay attention to what is happening within the business.
Thanks for sharing
Gaz

Thanks Gaz.

That's an interesting part of affiliate marketing that I never thought about Jessica. It could be very beneficial to know what 'other' products people buy from your link to Amazon.
Jim

Yes, if I recommend one cat product but a bunch of people buy another one, maybe I should check out the other one too! This doesn't normally happen, but when it does I take notice.

Not on \Amazon, but I do, do planners and journals. Am doing a review in a few weeks on a Company that does planners and journals, which have full PLR. If you are interested pm me for a link.

Stuart

Thanks Stuart. I am not quite ready for a planner yet since I don't have much time to dedicate to my websites in the summer. I am just doing enough to keep them alive for now.

I have sold 239 items on Amazon from my site this year. Only 22 of them were items I advertised. Around 75% are not even from my niche and I couldn't really consider to include them in my posts.

Joe

That is interesting. I have not done the math on mine but I have thought about doing so.

I am not in the work from home or make money online niche so I can't review blogging planners or jeans, shoes, cell phone cases or many other random things people buy.

One of my niches is pet health and behavior products however so I can benefit from seeing other pet products that people buy.

My niche is scuba diving equipment and I can easily see which items have nothing to do with it. It's great, though, that people use my site as the gateway when they are in a buying mood.

Yes, whatever gets sales! That is a good thing in niches like yours with specialty items with a more limited audience and mine with many lower priced items. Either way it is nice to have the opportunity to get more sales.
