Summer and Motivation - What a Conundrum!

Last Update: June 09, 2018

What's your motivation like, for your online business, in the summertime? Are you as disciplined with work as you are in the winter?

Maybe that depends where you live? I live in northern Canada, where the winters are long and the summers short but very sweet!!

The daylight hours are fantastic in the summer. We get 17 hours of sun (June 21st being the longest day) vs 7 hours in the winter (Dec. 21st). With our extended days, there's always so much we want to do outside.

But this is the problem...it's so difficult to remain focused on business. As online marketers, we know how important it is to do our tasks in a timely fashion. We need to be consistent with our published content, social media interaction, etc.

But it's so nice out!!! How do you stay motivated??

For me, I try to sit outside to work, as much as possible. That also includes bug spray, in Alberta anyway. Those suckers are BIG...lol. The big advantage of working online is the ability to work from anywhere. Our wifi works quite a distance from the house, and if I'm away from home, I use the data on my phone.

I also schedule my time! This is my life line. I always schedule my work in timed blocks. I allocate so much time for each activity, starting with the most important first, then going down the list to the least important. Content and traffic are primary, so this is where I will spend the most time.

If I don't get to the lesser tasks, I try not to beat myself up over it. What good would that do? So I remind myself that there will be those rainy days, when I'm forced to stay inside. That's when I catch up with the other tasks.

The greatest thing about scheduling your time is staying on task and not letting your mind wander to other things. If you set a timer for, let's say, 1.5 hours for writing, then that's what you do. Remove anything around you that could prove a distraction, and write. When the timer beeps, move on to the next task.

If I've allocated 4 hours per day to work, that's all I'll work. The remaining 13 hours of sunlight is for doing other important things in life. Like playing with my grandchildren, lol.

After all, that's why I started my online marketing business. To be able to stay at home, earn an income, and make more time for all the other important things in life.

What do you do to stay motivated?

Cheers,

Suzanne

Suzanne,
What a good time chart reminder. Often, our attention gets distracted for one thing or the other.
So I must say your blog has rescued that for people like me who do things randomly. Haha.. lol. :)

Thanks for sharing and stay motivated.

Enjoy the summer! We are in winter and ugh, I'm not a fan because I can't work outside. I love working outside in the summer. In summer I take my laptop everywhere. Now I'm stuck inside! Boo!
I hope you're enjoying the summer time :)

Ah, you must be down under lol. This past year I think we had 6 months of cold....blah!! So nice to be finally outside.

Working outside sounds like the best of both worlds. I know how hard it can be to work in the summer - our days aren't as long here in Denver, but I still prefer them to the so-short winter days.

Hi Jeannine,
I think you had a pretty hard winter too, eh? Ours was just miserable this past year. So really enjoying those long days of ours :)

Actually our winter wasn't so bad, but it took forever for summer to get here.
