Tuesday Musings – To Have a Sidebar or a Full-Width Layout

To sidebar or not, that’s something that used to frustrate me sometime back.

When I first created my website here in Wealthy Affiliate (in a music niche), I was very raw. I did not think too much about sidebars and all that. I was busy learning how to create a website in WordPress, do keywords research for my posts and complete all the tasks in my Certification.

I had simple ideas about how a website should look – a beautiful header image, a sidebar with different widgets and ads or banners, and if the theme allowed, a beautiful background. I did not think about having a footer then and I tried to cram everything in the drop-down menus on the menu bar.

I wanted to have everything on the sidebar – widgets (categories, search bar, archives, recent posts, recent comments), WA banners, Jaaxy banner, affiliate products, Google ads. It’s as if I didn’t want my visitors to think that I was unprofessional, and having all those visual elements made me feel secure. The banners and ads were positioned more as baits to earn possible leads, sign-ups and revenue when people “accidentally” clicked on them. How naive!

This was 10 months ago.

Now that I have matured a bit, I was looking at the option of dropping the sidebar altogether. I have seen that while many authority websites do not employ the sidebar, some still have it. Neil Patel has it. So I had to confront the question again – to have a sidebar or not.

I love the minimalist design with everything stripped down to just a few bare elements. I tried with a minimalist look but long days of living with the sidebar left me with an empty feeling when it was removed. It had been such an integral part of my website.

So, I had to give myself more time to get used to the full-width layout that I was employing now. Fortunately, my theme allows me to customise everything very quickly and without many hassles. So, the sidebar was gone and with it all its appendages – the widgets, the banners and the ads. I brought the subscribers’ opt-in form down in the footer along with my brief bio. I have a pseudo sidebar now – actually, a slider sidebar that sides in at the click in its designated button.

My website has now a full-width layout, with footer, and a slider sidebar. The slider sidebar is opened only by those who linger on my site for long and hence, has a few elements only – random posts, a banner and my tweets (a Twitter widget).

Initially, like I said, I was slightly uneasy with the almost vacant minimalist look that I was trying to achieve. But I had to force myself get accustomed to it because I was starting to love it. It looks airy, roomy, with lots of white spaces and with a deliberate design that tries to let readers focus on the content only. No frills, no nonsense.

Then a few days back, I was curious to see the previous look of my website. So, I just activated by right sidebar with all the usual elements.

By now, I had grown so accustomed to the full-width layout of my site that when the sidebar appeared, it suddenly made me feel all cramped. It was stifling and made me uneasy.

How strange! This was the same design that I had used from the beginning. This was almost my signature style that time.

Why then was I not feeling comfortable with it? Is it only a simple case of brain conditioning or something else? Let me not bother myself with all these questions now.

I love my full-width look now. So be it.

I cannot say which style is better. In the end, it’s a matter of one’s choice. Whether you employ the full-width layout look or one with a sidebar, it’s about making your visitors feel comfortable and welcoming.

I also think it’s about creating an intrigue too.

A slider really rocks a sidebar Sukumar

It does, Mike!

Great point!
There is a trend to use footer and full-width layout.
It depends of niche also...

Thank you for sharing

Both layouts have their equal place of importance. Neither is one superior nor inferior. Yes, it depends on the niche. It's about one's personal taste too.

Yes... absolutely
That's my point

All websites change and evolve. Well done for having the courage to experiment.

Mine's a relatively new website and so I have the luxury to experiment a bit :)

I believe it was last Friday's live training Sukumar.

Jay said he just did a test on his site and found that having the sidebar actually cut his number back dramatically. I suggest yo go back and watch it.

It might help you to decide which would be better for your site a well.

Calvin

Jay always has interesting things to say. I'll surely watch it.

Thank you for sharing your design experience. I am currently in the process of redesigning my site to create a better user experience and had the same questions. I am actually for now choosing to keep my sidebar for more real estate. I am in the health and fitness niche and am not only going to be promoting affiliate products, but also online health consultant services. My hubbie is a prolific health and fitness writer who has exclusively the two first pages in google search so I am incorporating his blog roll, audio and videos in the sidebar leading to landing pages for his products. I am hoping to roll out my new look on October 1.

I guess, it depends on the niche too and what you want your readers to find. I cannot imagine the WA platform or Facebook without a sidebar. It needs a bit of an experimentation, and well, some courage too. It takes time to settle to a final look. Our websites evolve with time.

Hey Sukumar,
Never heard about slider sidebar, how do you add it?
Do you add the banner,(WA banner?) and twitter widget in that slider sidebar?
Thanks,

Regards,
Jivita.

The slider sidebar came bundled along with the theme I'm using. It basically a hidden sidebar that slides in (when it slides in, it pushes away the reading area) when the visitor clicks its button on top. This means when the visitor first lands on my site, he sees the full-width layout only with the footer area.
As the slider sidebar is only a sidebar that's hidden, I can any widget in there just like I do in the conventional sidebar. And yes, I have added WA banners and my tweets there (in a Twitter widget). Thanks for dropping by, Jivita. Hope your business is doing well.

Hi Sukumar
I had not thought of doing the full-width thing with my sidebars and will go see what its all about thank you
I love learning new things:)
Vicki

You might not like it in the beginning. It takes time getting used to it. There's no harm in trying out both the options :)

Good

Very well said Suku...The simpler, the better. A simple impressive and uncluttered sidebar is god and easy on the eye.

Personally, I like full width with recent comments and posts.

I tend to choose simple themes that have either pastel colours or strong vibrant ones, depending on the niche of my sites.

Carry on doing what you are doing...!

Thanks for dropping by, Stella. I love minimalist designs. The only thing we should be careful is overdoing it. You know, when you strip down everything, there's the possibility of your visitors feeling confused how to navigate around. Too simple can make things complicated too :) There needs to be balance and a clear purpose of what you want to achieve.

It looks beautiful!

Thanks for the inspiration... This is something that I have contemplated myself... :)

It takes some time to get used to the full-width design if you had been having the sidebar for long. Give yourself some time. Forget about "missing out" on those in the widgets - possible clicks or sales. But it grows on you. Nothing beats a spacious, airy site. That's my personal opinion though. Everybody has different preferences.
