The Fine Art Of Humblebragging

The thing about online marketing or blogging, to be more precise, is that it requires a fair deal of humblebragging. Now, that’s a fine line to tread because nobody likes a show-off but at the same time, we need to make our sales pitch without actually sounding like one. And when one is in a highly competitive niche like “how to earn money online”, it becomes all the more difficult because people tend to be more scornful of anything that says it is simple to monetise our online activities. It’s a strange dichotomy: people are highly sceptical of something genuinely workable yet at the same time, are ready to run after anything that goes in the line of “how-to-get-rich-overnight”. Digital communication is notoriously vulnerable to misinterpretation in trying to sound modest when you’re actually telling the world that you have found something really great and that you are successful there. Sounds familiar?

In the internet marketing world, as in our social and professional interactions, we are all trying to manage the impressions that people form of us. The internet and the anonymity that it provides tend to make us go overboard at times when we want to create a good impression about ourselves. After all, we are hoping that the positive impression is going to engage our customers and would generate business leads. Nowadays, self-promotion is ubiquitous, thanks mainly to the social media.

They say people hate the humblebraggers more than the braggers. Harsh, isn’t it? When we are trying to sell an idea or promote something online, it harms most of the time if we sound like an aggressive salesman. Instead, should we not try to tone down on our overt sales pitch by publishing things that people will connect and find value in them? One should not be afraid to share good news and promote something of great value but that should not be at the cost of alienating people. Do not be ashamed of celebrating success but do not go for the overkill.

Everyday we are presented with countless opportunities to promote ourselves, our business to the world. We have to figure out ways to make people sit up and take notice of the good things we are promoting. I guess, it’s okay to say things loud if we sincerely want the good things to reach the people. Do not forget, we are trying to gain the trust of our customers. We cannot afford to shoo them away, can we?

Movie stars humblebrag all the time but, the way they do it is so fake. They are all just trying to stay relevant and "noticed."

But, Sukumar, I see your point that, for us, humblebragging on a more subtle scale keeps us from appearing to be just "know-it-all" folks and still convinces our readers that we know what we're talking about!

Jim

Humblebragging, when it's too obvious, is nauseating to many. So it really is a fine line to tread. That's why I say it's an art :)

where there is opportunity there is attraction.

That's true.

Keep sharing and providing value to your readers. If you are doing it right, and the message is sincere you won't need to worry about the minority of those who are alienated. One cannot please everyone. Be happy with a majority.

Hell! True...we cannot please everyone. If we are honest then it should prevail. Cheers!

A deft way to market Sukumar! https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/humblebrag

Another name for subtle-bragging. Yo! Let us humblebrag our way to the top :)

Humblebragging that is new one on me first time I have seen that phrase I love that we should all do that especially since we are part of this wonderful opportunity with wealthy affiliate.

Yes, let us all do. I'm trying to perfect the art :)

Love that phrase 'humblebragging'
Great post.

I think we are allowed to humblebrag (or brag) a little. Only let us not overdo it to the point that it becomes irritating to the reader (or listener).

I'm near launching my website maybe not near but close.
Your article extended my launch a few weeks longer.

I hear me in your article...many thanks my friend.

I need to redo my content with a balance of brag and
humble pie!

It's no rocket science but an art to be able to humblebrag without sounding like one. I'm already on my way to perfecting it :)

Are there samples I can sink my teeth on.....thanks ahead!

Frank

You need to find your own way. May the Force be with you!

I can hear that orchestra playing that theme music in my head!
