Sure, Looks Do Matter

A website should look beautiful. Period. But did they not say beauty lies in the eye of the beholder? So my idea of beauty will not the same as yours. There are many designing elements in every WordPress theme, free or premium and, depending on your niche, need and your idea of what a beautiful design should be, as you gain more experience, you begin exploring the different customisation features in your theme till you arrive at a look that fits your scheme of things. You become bold enough to try out even the CSS options with different codes. But things were not always like this. Back then, when you were just beginning to take those baby steps into this blogging world, many things looked overwhelming. And customisation other than through the theme options was a big no-no.

Minimalist or an extravagant theme, sidebar or full-width without sidebar, image logo or text logo, footer or slider widget – the options are many. For many people, when they are beginners, there are many things to learn and so much content to create that there’s hardly any time for doing any “extra” designing. Everything is so new that most people are afraid to do any customisation thinking they might do something serious to their site. To a newbie, the most intimidating area of a WordPress site is the theme editor and entering this area is akin to venturing into the forbidden zone. I remember when I used to accidentally step into this theme editor area, I retreated my steps immediately. All the codes there used to scare me so much.

Personally, I always thought a beautiful design translates to good user experience. I prefer to be offered a minimalist design rather than a layout that looks busy and cluttered. But minimalist does not mean there’s nothing on the homepage to guide me around. If it’s so minimalist that I’m confused how to navigate around, then the design is no more simple and defeats the whole purpose of employing a minimalist look. I prefer a menu that’s straightforward and conventional, where I have the road map of the whole site in front of me. Let’s remove all the unnecessary widgets from the sidebar (or footer menu) that adds no value for the visitors, shall we?

So, how’s your website shaping up to? Are you happy with the design you have already? Or is your website still evolving as far as its looks are concerned? Now, friends, let’s hear it from you.

You've pointed the best part where every member fears to venture into - the editor arena of a website.
We can always dive in exploring many more experiments though but make sure to see some samples first from Google for that matter.

I feel my website's OK right now as far as its looks are concerned. And planning for more feedback from our community.

Cheers!

Keep improving for there's always room for improvement. Cheers!

Cool.

Yes I also agree with Karen but want to add that as our website is always evolving as we go through the training we to are continuing evolving and learning more.

Tried and True

Elaine

True, our websites are always evolving. Learn and keep on improving.

I'm never satisfied....every time I re-read my work, I find something to "tweak"!

That's the luck of a "A" type personality...........................

Laurel

Haha...there's always something to tweak around, no? Let's keep on improving.

I also agree with Karen I like mine right now but there are a few things I would like to do

I was thinking about this very issue this morning. This weekend I am going to set aside some time and jack up the appearance. How is it coming your side?

Trying, experimenting, evolving. That's how things are at my end :)

I think all websites are constantly evolving. The more we learn, the braver with design we become.
With Grace and Gratitude
Karen

So very true, Karen. We are all evolving as bloggers and so are our sites. I sometimes think there'll be no such thing as an absolute, final design.
