Good Writing and Good Communication

We are told umpteen number of times that one need not be a good writer to succeed in content marketing, and that what one needs is only good communication skills. Really? But are we not going to put down in written words what we want to communicate with the audience? Can someone be a bad writer but has excellent communication skills and hence succeed in online business?

Being able to communicate effectively with written words is a skill few possess and is something that comes with experience. When I say experience, it does not only mean the experience in content writing but also the experience that one gains in the subject on which the content is being written. Good communication comes from the ‘authority’ one develops in a niche because when you are thorough with the ins and outs of a particular market, I guess, the communication is that much more effective. I have seen good writers faltering in putting up a convincing post because of the lack of authority in the subject. Good writing skills cannot mask the shortcomings one has in a topic, and the audience is intelligent enough to glean the substance from the wordy, roundabout writings one usually employs when one is ill-equipped to talk authoritatively.

The write-as-if-you-are-talking-to-a-friend way of creating content is a compelling ‘style’ of writing that takes time to develop for many. Mainly because it takes time to talk authoritatively on a subject despite our having the passion for it. You know, having a passion in a niche does not necessarily mean we can create a clear, concise content on it everytime. Most of us need further research on the niche and its market so that every post of ours make for a compelling read. So that it makes the reader pull the trigger on the CTA.

Copywriting, like all crafts, is a skill that is honed over time. Keep on writing and not all of your posts might be compelling enough to make people take action everytime in the beginning. But if you are consistent in your efforts and there is the eagerness to learn, I guess the ‘techniques’ will be mastered in time and ingrained in your skillset. Until then, keep writing!

Well said!
I have got so much writing for my new site...that I will not be done when I am 60 years old...since its about my crazy life the last 40 years! So maybe I can compress it into 6 years...WHO knows...LOL
Have a good week!
Tom

Bring it on...!

I will keep writing. My writing is not where it needs to be but, I shall continue to practice.

Yes, keep writing. Your personal blog here in WA could well provide you with the much needed "training ground" for honing the skills :) If you care to notice, you will find it easier to put up blog posts here than your actual website. But I must say one must reserve the better resources for one's website :)

Thanks for sharing.

Great blog, but I don't find it difficult to communicate, you see I'm a female, we are honed with this skill from an early age. Tee hee
I do agree that we must know our subject but I do find other writers with greater skills at that, so pick their brains. It's called research.
Cheers Sukumarth,
Jae

Haha...true. Blessed you are for being a woman! Maybe that's the reason I find most successful bloggers are women. Digressing, I'm reminded of the mythological tale of Echo and Narcissus, where the "talkative nymph" Echo was cursed by Juno for her verbal diarrhoea and because of which she could only repeat the last word uttered by others. The aural effect that we now refer to as echo is named after her :)

Wow that's cute
Jae

Thanks.

Sukumar, Nice post. Jay

Hi! Sukumar,
Writing well under the common practice to use right words and rules will definitely make readers save more time and understand better. So, I agree with you.

Best for the peak of Happy New Year 2018,

Chin

Happy New Year 2018! One of my goals for the coming year is to master the art of good communication with my writing. Wish you a fabulous year ahead, Doctor.

That statement is nonsense Sukumar. It's like crawling around without a backbone!

Means one needs to have good writing skills to be able to communicate effectively in the blog posts?

Absolutely! Sukumar.

You have certainly communicated your point in this article. Point well taken and expressed effectively. Scott

I'm happy that I could communicate effectively here.

Communication in any form is a skill we all need to hone. This will only ever come with practice. So just keep writing and talking, aiming to improve every single time.
Great post.
With Grace and Gratitude
Karen

I wish to hone the skill and hope to master the art someday.
