HELP! I'm not getting any emails whatsoever pertaining to WA. Literally overnight they simply stopped coming.

Please forgive me for not "responding" but I don't eve

I had a Yahoo problem and sent a report that my email was compromised, it was fixed in a couple hours...we were suppose to have some solar storms recently that may disrupt communications.

Yeah, change to Gmail.

Gmail works.

You have to switch over to gmail and change it in your settings here.

There's apparently a problem between Outlook/Hotmail and other email providers they own and WA. Kyle posted about it yesterday. Mine stopped on Saturday from my Outlook account. I switched to Gmail (his suggestion, BTW) and haven't had a problem since, Patti.

Do Ambassadors make money from being ambassadors? I'm still not sure about that part.

Nope, this is just an arbitrary ranking of engagement within the WA - holds no real value and has no impact on building your online business

When I was here the first time I had an ambassador....has this program been eliminated?

I think it's one of those sideways promotions; more responsibility with the same pay.

HA! I think you're right, Atlanticus!

If they do I missed out.

STEVEO and ANDRE. I just figured it out! ALL ambassadors get paid $100 a day except you two. I guess there are a couple notes in your file saying that you two didn't actually complete every lesson, yet checked all the steps as "done" anyway? DONT MESS WITH W.A! I mean... it's almost as bad as sassing the phone company!

LOL! You do know I'm kidding, right? I adore you two! ❤️

If there are benefits to being an ambassador, I'm not aware of them :)

I sure do want to be an Ambassador!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?? You will be an ambassador in no time flat! You're on a roll, Girl! :)

You don't need a title to help others to me you already are one. So is everyone else who wishes to help their family friends. But it is still better to focus on your website first.
Take care be well

Andre you are so good. Your perspective is always just what I need! I must take care of my website first. THEN get a pedicure and THEN take a nap.

I just read it over again, Patti. I think it's more recognition.

I think you're right, Carla. I don't know where I got the idea that Ambassadors earned extra money. I still want to be an ambassador - I just didn't fully understand it. Thanks for responding to my question!!

Hadn't seen this one. Thanks so much Skip2str! This is really helpful.

I'm taking the big plunge and attempting to transfer my 4-year-old website (currently under Vistaprint) over to WA. I have 2 questions right off the bat:

1) If sometime in

It seems to me that although Sugarbird owns the domain name the actual content is on VistaPrint's hosting servers. If she were to point the domain name to WA then all the content would disappear and she would no longer have access to it. This would be the case even before she closed the VistaPrint account. It's getting the content into a safe place before she takes any action to move the domain name that's the crux of the problem. Will anyone volunteer to help with the copy and paste for her? Many hands make light work. ~Marion

OMG! I'm so glad you told me that Marion! I knew that if I changed the direction of the domain and pointed it to WA, that people could no longer see the GCI website (until I transferred all the content). But it never occurred to me that I wouldn't have access to it either! DUH! Holy Smokes. That could have been a disaster. Thank you so much for your very informative comment!

It's good thing we have Marion on our sides then again she is an Aussie girl just saying.

If you have to copy every thing from vistaprint you could simply use a siterubix sub domain name. Then when you have every thing copyed over you can point your domains to WA and export then import your content to your domain names.

David thank you for this idea but I have to admit I have no clue what you're talking about. I'm learning though! Be patient. I do think I have a solution though. Going to try naming it something different at first.

The siterubix is the free domain names that you can get here at WA. You can find it under Build My Website click the domains tab then on the tab sub domains. Can name the sub domain the same as the one your moving hope this helps free is better when doing this.

Yes, that helps a lot and now I understand. I'll take a look at Siterubix. Thanks so much, David! Very helpful.

Gee whiz, this sounds more complicated than moving to a foreign country. Good luck, you'll find an easy way I'm sure.

OMG you are so right! I dunno - maybe I'll just move to a foreign country instead. :)

I made a quick phone call to check with VistaPrint if there is a way to back up your website to your own computer. The answer is no. Your only option is to copy and paste your entire website to word processing files on your home computer and then when all that is done you can close your VistaPrint account and change to WA and upload all your content from your PC to your WA website. I know you have a HUGE website and this will take time. As I suggested once before: divide your website up into manageable chunks and ask the WA community to take one of these chunks each to copy and paste and email the pages, one at a time to you. I'll volunteer to help with this. I can use Word or Apache OpenOffice.org Writer or RTF. ~Marion

Wow! Thank you, THANK YOU for checking all this out. This chunk of info helps a ton, Marion.

You know... I had never even thought about backing it all up on Word. That is a great idea but also, as you said - a ton of work. I think it's worth it though to get out from under the VistaPrint umbrella due to it's limiting my SEO. I will keep you posted and just might take you up on your generous offer. Again, thank you SO much. You are a wonderful asset to the WA community. And to me!! ❤️

You can count me in too anything for a retired old lady heheheh even though she beats up sharks. No problems if you need my email PM me
I am done now kinda of sort of.
Goodnight to my two ladies.

HA! You know it! Never mess with a lady who kills sharks, no matter how old she is (the lady, not the shark...).

I once caught 4 Gummy Sharks on a fishing trip with my ex and my son. They both caught 3 each, so 20 flake fillets.

Maybe sometimes I might take my chance with the shark haha

Gummy sharks!? Are those like gummy bears?

Not quite, they are small sharks without those great big teeth that everyone is so scared of.

I think Granny has them that's why they are called gummy sharks and that's why she is so snappy.

Because the site is huge this would be better to talk to Kyle or maybe Carson he seems to be more involved at the back-end of hosting.

You own the domain so the site is yours however if you did point to WA and later in the far far future you want to leave WA you would need to take out your website and find another hosting service.

Carson has stated previously Web hosting is for WA members,
And I don't think their do external hosting as yet maybe in the future who knows?

Just type up Web hosting at the top question box you might also find some answer but beware some sessions are from 2012/2013 so there may be changes I know they have just upgraded the servers to make it bigger and better.

But I believe if would be best to PM Kyle or Carson because the site is large

Take care Patti
Andre

Thanks so much Andre, and I will definitely do that. I think just because if the size of this project and the fact that I'm new to WP, I should probably chat w Kyle and Carson at the outset. I'll keep you posted. ❤️

Thank you Patti I do remember reading something about larger sites and pretty sure Carson's name came up in it. But i think that would be the best way to approach it with both Kyle and Carson or maybe Carson I am sure he deals a lot more with the back end side of WA. I will be going offline soon int 10.10pm so good day to you and nighty night from me. xx

Hello Patty, Not really sure how Vistaprint,Works with their Websites,However If you have paid on the domain with them,You should be able to transfer it, To another company. I have used Vistaprint, for 6 years for custom shits and large banners,Never had no problems with them. If you still have a problem with moving the site,Send me a PM,We will do a conference call to make it happen. That company is very easy to work with.I hope that this helps.Ken

Hi Ken - thanks so much for answering. I like Vista Print too, and will continue to get my biz cards & stationery there. They're a good company and have served me well for 4 years, but I want my sites to be WP sites.

I'm not having a problem with moving the site - I own the domain and know how to do it. My problem is that our WA website development program won't let me move forward until I point Great Cooking Ideas to the servers at WA. BUT: I don't want to do that until I get the WA (WP) site built b/c it's going to take awhile and I want to keep my VistaPrint host up and running until I'm finished building the new site.

Clear as mud? I don't know if I'm explaining it very well.

I thought you want to transfer an existing site? Why would you want to wait? Or is it a site that works in tandem with the one you want to transfer? I guess I'm not clear here.

Yes, I'm transferring an existing site but that isn't a WP site, so I have to convert. and it's a HUGE site with lots and lots of pages, so it's going to take some time.

Okay. I've got it now. That's gonna be some job. Good Luck!

Oh boy, I'll sure need it! Thanks Carla!

Hi Patty,
For your first question Yes you will always own your website as long as you keep your domain name renewed each year. The only thing WA does is provide hosting to your website and keep it safe from hackers out there. There is also a bunch of more benefits to hosting your domain at WA.

If you ever decide to leave WA(I hope you don't because we would all miss you here) You have got 30 days to move it to another hosting company after you cancel. Pointing your website to Wa's nameservers is a pretty easy process and here is some training on how to do this here.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/wa-hosting-setting-up-your-domain-dns

I know this training doesn't cover vistaprint just the main domain registrars. I don't have any idea how vistaprint works because I have never dealt with them.

I would wait until you have got your WA website setup and ready to move it. This way your website stays active and you don't lose any traffic or potential customers.

I hope this helps Patty and if you have anymore questions please let me know.
Scott

Oh yes, both your answers help a ton, Scottdogg! And thanks so much for missing me if I leave! I truly don't plan on it bc I love it here, but I just wanted to cover the bases.

The problem I'm having is that the "program" for setting up my WP website at WA won't let me go to the next step until I point my domain to WA servers. I don't want to do that just now... want to wait, as you suggested. How can I get to next step without pointing?

If you aren't ready to point your website to the WA nameservers yet, then I would hold off on doing this until you are ready. You cannot bypass this step because this step is a very important part of the process.

After you make the transfer it usually only takes a couple of hours. The longest it should take is up to 48 hours, but for me it was usually transferred in a couple of hours or less.

Since this isn't a WP site does it have an import/export feature available in the tools section? If it does then you can export all your content from it to your new WP website. To do this go into the import/export tab and click on export. This will download a file to your computer that contains all your pages and posts.

Whenever you are ready to make the transfer you would simply need to go into your new WP website and in the tools tab click on import. You will be loading up the file that you downloaded earlier and loading it to your new site.

I hope this helps and let me know if you need anymore help.
Scott

Hmmm. Good question, Scott! But if I just export from the VistaPrint site, won't the alignment and everything be totally out of whack?

Well, you have answered my question anyway and I sure thank you for that. I'll check out the import/export possibility. If not possible w/ VistaPrint and I have to do all this by hand, I'm not sure what I'll do. I need to do some thinking. I don't want to have Great Cooking Ideas off line during the time I'm building my new WP site under WA. That could be months.

I never thought of it being on another platform so I'm not sure if this would work or not Patty. Your vistaprint content might not work in WP. This would be a question for Kyle or Carson to answer. I would send Kyle a PM asking him how this would work.

Let me know how this turns out for you
Scott

GUESS WHAT! I think I just came up with an answer to my own question! I'll name my WA site something else (i.e., Patti Mays . com) and build my Great Cooking Ideas site under that name. Then... I'll just change the name when I'm finished building! What do you think?

This sounds good Patty! You can always change your website name later on down the road. Just remember you can't change your domain name once you purchase it so try and get a domain name that's relevant to your niche.

You can't change a domain name that you've purchased, but you can use a different one instead, right?

Hi Patti, if you decide to leave WA then you have 30 days to transfer your site to alternative web hosting.

As for point 2, I have not a clue... far too technical for me but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you out with that one.

Wishing you all the best.

Debbie

Thanks so much Debbie! Your answer helps a lot.

I want the experts' opinions on this. I have had a cooking website for 4 years that I built through the VistaPrint Website Builder. It's moderately successful, although I have n

Nobody has wisdom if he does not know the Dark.

Some great suggestions here. My comment is that I suggest you keep your Vista Print sub-domain going while you transfer your original .com to WA. Vista Print won't be aware that this is happening until you cancel your account with them. Sure it's going to take time to copy and paste the pages one at a time but the end result will be worth it. Once you close your Vista Print account you won't have duplicate content any more and the search engines will be happy. And the bonus is that you won't be paying that extra $30 a month. ~Marion

MBlack that is really great to know and terrific advice. You're right, it's going to be a real time consumer copying and pasting all those pages but at least I have that option! What if I had to re-write it all! EEK! Horrors! I wouldn't be finished until the turn of the century...

My next suggestion is that you do a "shout out" to all WA members and ask for volunteers to do 5 or 10 pages for you - copy and paste - to a siterubix subdomain. You could then export from the temporary subdomain and import into your permanent domain. You just need to PM each volunteer which pages you assign to them. I'll be the first to volunteer to help. I can do 10 pages/posts for you. ~Marion

I agree with all these suggestions, you don't need a web designer any more, WA teaches you to do it yourself.

Hi - my first question would be, do you have Google Analytics on your website? If so, what does it tell you about your visitors?

Are they coming from organic searches, what are they searching for etc? Are you happy with the traffic numbers, and business it brings you?

If you don't have analytics - how do you know (or more relevant to your question, how does your web designer know) it is working or not?

Any unscrupulous web designer will try and run rings around you - by saying things like... SEO, SERPS, Blackhat, Whitehat, CSS, HTML5, WEB2/3, PlugIns, JQuery, PHP - all these are words that I expect would scare people who are not familiar with what you can learn here.

Similar to me - mention "starter motor, oil change, battery flat" and you'd have me running for the nearest Halfords - but I bet with a few minutes of someone telling me what they are in laymans terms, I'd be fine.

My second question would be - ask your web designer exactly what they think they can add (by charging you to move your site to "just another host"), that you don't have already... then post their answers back here for some real life feedback.

I have setup and run/charged for websites for many years - I know how my "competition" gets customers - and it's through scare tack-ticks - much like an unsolicited call to a pensioner, about why they need to give their personal information so that the crook on the end of the line gets information that lets them steal their identity.

Take your time over web designers - there's not a lot they can do, that you don't already have access to here - and with so many people willing to help answer any questions, you may be surprised at how much you can do yourself - if indeed you need to move your website at all.

All the best, Mark

Hi - just to add to this, after I've seen some other comments posted - I've seen siterubix sites here index and rank very well, so subdomains do seem to do ok - but perhaps if you do want your own domain, what I would do is, register a new domain name - and start a new site.

Add new content to your new site, and promote it as taught here.

In time, redirect your posts/pages (using a 301 redirect response, so as not to duplicate content), and migrate your existing site to your new domain.

Cheers, Mark

Hey Mark - thanks for your nice long and very thorough answer. I don't know if my VP website has Google Analytics or not. They do give in-depth reports every day on who visits, where from, how referred, what pages they visit... the whole thing. But it just says "SEO Analyzer" and I get the idea it's Vista Print's own program.
I honestly don't think my designer is unscrupulous; I just think he's wanting to get as much work as he can and he sees a really big project in the offing. But you're right, he definitely uses that scary SEO term a lot and my eyes glaze over.

2 Questions:
1) Do you think I could bring it over myself to the WA WP site?
2) Would my site still be "under the umbrella" except this time with WA instead of VistaPrint, and therefore still not very visible for SEO?

You may want to take a look at the site; as I said it's huge. It's http://GreatCookingIdeas.com
THANK YOU AGAIN for your terrific answer. You are the best!

Hi.

You're welcome - that's what's great about WA - we ALL help each other.

Your domain seems to repoint to http://patriciamays.vpweb.com/ - so all you have there is a domain redirect. No pages are actually on your domain/website.

IF it is a wordpress site (I'm not sure that VP is), then you should be able to transfer it here with little trouble.

If it is not, then I would suggest setting up a new domain - pointing it to WA hosting, and as I mentioned above, over time redirect your pages to the WA hosting.

You will definitely find that your monthly/annual subscription to WA, gives you far more than a simple hosting with VP will give (for $30 per month). For one, you have access to a huge community of people doing exactly what you are doing, and sharing their mistakes and successes with everyone - two - you have access to the sort of training you cannot buy from a web designer.

By all means, continue with a web designer, if you just want to concentrate on content - but my advice would be to spend a few days here, just going through some of the initial courses - and determining for yourself, if you think you can build your own website.

I have seen so many posts, and websites from people here, that had not one clue about building a website, but followed the training, and asked for advice and help from the members here, and have built a site that is truly wonderful, and giving them an income they had set their mind to.

I won't lie - it IS easy :) using the WordPress platform is a dream come true. You visualize what you want your site to look like, and it will let you do it.

I've been programming websites for years, the hard way - and came across WA and WordPress about a year ago. I still program, but only specialist web applications (my main business) - but for websites, including ecommerce websites, WordPress gives you absolutely everything you need to do it yourself.

I'm not saying don't use your web designer - just give the WA training a shot - if it's not for you, fall back on your designer. However, the hosting here is also second to none - so if you can host on WordPress, I don't know of any other hosting provider that will give you what WA does (and I have been doing web hosting, design etc for approx 19 years).

All the best, Mark

Mark I'm not exactly sure what all this means but I'm sure by reviewing the lessons I'll catch on. It sure does bum me out that my "real" website name isn't even featured or recognized with search engines. BOO!!

Hi - that's not to say that your VP subdomain isn't - so please don't think I'm saying your not visible in the search engines.

It's just that your main domain name, immediately redirects to the subdomain on VP - but that's ok, as long as you're getting traffic. IT just means that it may be your subdomain that is indexed, rather than your main top level domain.

If you've used that top level domain for advertising and marketing, it would not be a good idea to repoint it at this stage, to a brand new website. That's why I'm suggesting over time, you may want to transfer your recipes etc to a new domain, that you are certain you have full control over.

Please do follow the lessons - one by one - and complete the tasks set at the end of each lesson. Everyone who has joined WA before you, and since - is on the same journey - so anything you are not clear about, just ask.

I'm not sure who introduced you to WA - but they would be a great first point of contact - but just post anything in the forums here, and you'll get a ton of help from other people like me and Barry and Cathy, and Carla, and Andre.

Cheers, Mark

Gosh Mark you have been so thorough! I sincerely appreciate all your wise words of advice and will definitely do what you suggest. When you say "Top Level Domain" do you mean VP Web or Great Cooking Ideas?

Hi - everyone here is as helpful, and I'm sure you will be too to new members.

TLD (top level domain) I mean the GreatCookingIdeas.com - it redirects you to the VP subdomain: http://patriciamays.vpweb.com/ - so I would imagine you have used GreatCookingIdeas.com in any advertising/leaflets etc - so you don't want to waste that investment.

All the best, Mark

Holy smokes, what a learning experience this little question has brought me! When I think back over the last 4 years of promoting Great Cooking Ideas I get real cranky about the money and time I've wasted. But WA is my new "high road" and I want to thank all of you, especially you, Mark Tait, for all your help and insight. I'll keep you posted.

Hi - you're very welcome. This is a truly unique community in my opinion - any question you have, you will have many people who have already been there/done that helping you out.

I'm not trying to tell you how to run your website, but you could monetize it by doing reviews of tools you use for your cooking - eg. what are your favourite knives, what blender do you use, what's the best food mixer you'd recommend etc.

You could also have links to where to find the ingredients - I'm sure I heard amazon were going to start stocking groceries - but almost any other store will have an affiliate program you can join.

You don't have to move your website to add these - you can add affiliate links to any html page.

Cheers, Mark

That is my big next step.. To monetize my site and start earning a little on the side. Now with the training from WA I feel I have the tools and support to get going. I love your idea about the ingredient links! I hadn't thought of that and it's a terrific idea! Thanks again Mark and I DONT think you're trying to tell me how to run my website. You're so funny! ❤️

I would say that it is always better to have your own domain like a .com domain for the search engines
But remember if you but a new domain it will be brand new to Google and it will take time for it to be ranked

Barry

Hi Barry. Luckily, I had the foresight to get my own domaine. If I had purchased it through VistaPrint I would have to leave it with them. Thanks so much for your information. It is a .com, by the way, and the name is a good one: Great Cooking Ideas.com

I like to cook so I will check it out when you get it up an running, good luck on here with all your efforts.
I am a bit of a WordPress whiz so if you get stuck you can check out my blog posts on here lots of technical stuff explained in plain English

Barry

Barry thank you so very much for your kind offer and I will probably take you up on it. BTW, I'm following you back and thank you for the follow! I LOVE WA!!

I've only used Vista Print for biz cards, and no longer do that. I honestly don't know the SEO advantages, but I agree with Cathy S, bring the site here. You have tools here that I'm pretty sure you won't have at Vista Print. I have web sites hosted all over creation built by others. As soon as I'm a little bit more secure, I plan on bringing them all here. Good Luck!

Thanks so much Carla! Vista Print is wonderful, and I haven't had too many problems with their website building software. But it's $30 a month and if I'm not getting SEO there then why pay that money? But their printed goods, i.e. biz cards, stationery, etc. are THE best. Thanks for your answer!

I would tend to agree that VP is not as SEO friendly as WP. Since you already own the domain and since you are planning to monetize, why don't you consider bringing the site over to WP and doing it yourself? After all, that's one of the things that WA helps us do best and part of what you're paying for is the hosting service. If you have time constraints, etc. that prevent you from doing this yourself, is your contractor familiar with WA? I would strongly consider looking for someone who has WA experience to take care of this if (s)he does not. Hope this helps! ~Cathy

Hey Cathy that helps a lot! I don't know why I didn't think of bringing it over to WP via WA. My designer is not familiar with WA - I asked him a couple weeks ago. To be honest, I'd rather do it without his help, as he's expensive and this will be a BIG project (the site has over 200 pages and about a zillion pictures).
I'll check into it further. THANK YOU AGAIN for your great advice. And I'm following you by the way! Don't know why I wasn't before. :)

Don't forget the hosting is already included within your membership so why pay more? Maybe talk to Kyle seeing it is large before doing anything further with any changed to hosting.
Always my friend
Andre

Good point Andre!! I can see just from these answers that I'm paying WAY more than I need to be on VistaPrint. I've learned a ton just this past couple of hours!

Are you saying you have a Menu item called 'Welcome' and when people click on it they should be directed to your homepage but it's taking them somewhere else?

It should be under Appearance > Menu - under the 'Welcome' tab, it's the wrong site address - this is a guess, let me know if you want me to take a look.

Keep going onwards and upwards! : )
