Uncover Hidden Gems - My first website

Hi everyone! :)

It has been three weeks since I joined WA.

I can say that I have discovered a "goldmine of information" (to borrow GrampaMike's words) and many wonderful gems within the WA community, Kyle and Carson included.

I am truly grateful for all the help I received over the past weeks without which I most likely would have already given up trying to build my website: www.bestwealthyaffiliate.com

Thanks to Steph and Seth, I have already received 2 feedbacks for my website and a few more kind souls have also offered their help. At this stage, there are only 3 pages of content, one of which is the Privacy Policy Statement ;)

I do have a few questions though if you could help answer by way of feedback:

1) I wasted a lot of time trying to pick the right theme e.g. getting my title to fit on 1 line, tagline not showing, ugly menu colours...

The current theme doesn't seem to allow me to have a banner or the title text will become unreadable.

How do I enlarge font sizes and underline text?

Is that the reason why Kyle advised us not to pick a theme with "too many bells and whistles", so as not to get distracted by the less important aspects of building a good website?

2) The current theme I am using doesn't have the display social media icons option. Should I only worry about that at a later stage?

3) I had great difficulty trying to position the images and text in the layout. Not sure if I'm doing it correctly or if there's a more efficient way? (Work in progress to delete and re-insert the problem areas)

4) I can't get rid of the duplicate menu heading appearing on the page!! :(

5) I haven't learnt how to insert links, so some of the text (in bold) are actually meant to be links (Update: I have learnt to insert links, thanks to GrampaMike)

I think I might be able to resume work on the Affiliate Bootcamp only during weekends and will be heading back to the Get Started Here course to create my niche website as a matter of priority.

I would greatly appreciate receiving any other feedback in the discussion below and also if you could please leave some comments in the Comments section of my website.

Many thanks and have a good week ahead!

~ Sue

Update: The points in bold text are still unresolved as at 9/5/15.

Would appreciate your help! Thanks in advance. :)

Hi Sue, you are way ahead of me, so i might leave the discussion to the experts Cheers Helen

Hi Helen, no worries at all! :)
Thanks for stopping by and feel free to offer any feedback or comments about my site.
Also, do let me know should you need any help.

I really like your website and I got a lot of ideas from you. Wish I would have found this 5 days ago. Good luck I know you will be successful.

Wow, Trina, that's a huge compliment. Thank you so much! :)
A very warm welcome to WA!
You will learn a lot at WA and my beginner website is just a humble example resulting from the training I received at WA and not to mention hours of hard work.
As you progress along, you will come across many even more amazing websites by other WA members, including the ones that you yourself will be creating.
Thanks for the follow. You are more than welcome to journey along with me at WA.
Wishing you great success!

Hi Sue. You are doing great for only three weeks in. I am happy to have you in my network. Divican (below) is right about your rank in just a few weeks. Great job!

Hi Steph, thanks for your encouraging words.
I'm happy to know that and the pleasure is mine to meet you too!

Your rank gives us a good impression that you can do it. hard work pays of which you are doing..

Thank you, Divican. Nice to hear from you here! :)
About hard work, I know that you are speaking from experience, young man. ;)

I am glad I could help. Thank you for mentioning me in your blog. It can be confusing learning all the techniques needed for developing a WP site. Keep progressing through the training courses, even if you can only do it a couple days a week.

Thanks for the encouragement, Steph!
Hope you are making good progress at WA.

Hi sue: I have been working on my niche website, but I need to do more with it. It is coming along though.

simple themes always work best

Thanks, Dan!

Your current theme problems is why I'm not planning on using WordPress for my sites. It's not very user friendly based upon my recent experience.

I set up a test site using WordPress last night.

I wanted to see just how easy it would be to set up a rudimentary site using WordPress.

The only reason I got the site up in 4 hours without training is because I have been doing site design for so long. I suggest reading my review: I don't have enough technical expertise using WordPress to make suggestions on getting WP to do what you want. Perhaps other WA members can come to your rescue.

Howdy Grampa !

I have a big problem. I fell in love with the theme template I set up here at WA. It's so user friendly for my site visitors and has the look and feel my visitors would enjoy.

Now what do I do? I may have to swallow my words, eat some crow, and learn WordPress after all.

We will just have to see.

I stopped counting at 10 grandkids because I ran out of fingers to count them. I think I'm up to 12 but another little squirt keeps showing up at my house from time to time claiming to be my grandchild. Maybe the word is out that this guy gives away candy and ice cream when parents aren't looking. I'm not sure.

Inserting links is nothing more than going to the web page you want to link to and copying the URL or web address in your browser's address bar.

Next, go to your post and highlight the text you want as the link text.

Look up top in your post editor and find the icon that looks like a figure 8 laying on its side. Click on that and copy the page URL you want to link to in the appropriate box.

Press "ok" and ta daaa, you have a hyperlink to the web page you want to link to.

Hope that helps ... GrampaMike

Thanks for teaching me GrampaMike. I managed to insert some links.
I appreciate your kind help!

There is definitely wisdom in choosing a theme that is very simple at this stage of your learning. You will become acclimated over time to the things you would want on your site as you go forth.

One thing a lot of new members do is go crazy with plugins. Don't do this. For now, just the WA-recommended ones. Plugins eat up resources and if you have too many, they will cause your site to load too slowly. Also, people new at this don't realize that the more plugins you have, the more likely conflicts will occur. Once I helped a member who had 66 plugins on her site! Some of these were the same type of plugins and they were contradicting with each other. It was a mess!

Continue to follow the lessons and add things as instructed. Hope your first three weeks were awesome!

Thank you, Daniel for the heads up about plug-ins.
Whilst I haven't reached that level yet, it's good to have advice from people like you who share about your valuable experiences.

Try the Iconic one theme.

Thanks, Polly. I will explore using it for my next website.
