What Is A Sea Story, Shellback or Screw? WA Blog #75
Have you ever wondered what a sea story, a shellback or a screw is? Well if you were in the Navy or had a family member in the Navy you probably know.
- Going one step further, I have a guide of Navy Slang that is nearly seventy (70) pages long. Go figure.

Many of us that are new to WA scratch our heads and ask similar questions when we hear SEO, affiliate, optimize, etc.
- Much like slang from other professions and industries, I am sure thousands of terms exist that apply to blogging, marketing, etc.
I find myself referencing WA terminology or doing searches quite often, so I become am a little smarter (I hope) each day.
- It is a foreign language to many of us, so sometimes we are asking for an apple, but you may hear banana.
- I thought a burger with queso was a burger with fries when overseas so you can figure how that worked out.
The goal of my 75th WA Blog since joining four (4) months ago is simple.
- If you are unclear about a term, acronym, etc.,
- Start typing Terminology into the search bar and a world of resources will appear for your utilization.
Use the search bar and type Terminology or other questions.
Many members have taken the time to provide resources to make our lives better so why not take advantage of it.
If you have not searched for my earlier Naval Terms, I will share the meaning of each.
- Sea Story - A sea story is a sailors version of an embellished fishing or hunting story. Typically, these stories will carry an age rating.
- Shellback - A shellback is a sailor that has crossed the equator. Shellbacks participate in an initiation earn the title.
- Screw - The screw is a boats or ships propeller. Submarines are boats, and all other vessels are ships (or targets).
If you listen to a couple of old sailors talk, it is like speaking a different language.
- Please share industry or profession specific slang, terms, or acronyms that are cute or unique. Please keep it clean.
- Let us know if there is an all-inclusive terminology guide for WA since there are a number available when searching.
Thanks for reading my 75th blog and I wish you health, safety, and success. It is a trip being fifty plus going on fifteen, but I hope it would warm up a little.
Happy New Years,
Jay Patterson

Just about anything you choose to do is going to have a terminology that is specific to that activity or vocation.
I do not know of any cute terminology that relates to WA or blogging/affiliate marketing. If I did, I would gladly share it.
I do not know of any glossary of terms used here that we can access at WA. It would be nice if there were one that was easy to find when a person first starts at WA. Perhaps @Kyle or @Carson will read your blog and come up with one. It is easy to get overwhelmed when you are new to this whole thing.
Congratulations on your 75th blog post! What an accomplishment. I should blog more!
Happy New Year!
Anita
Thanks for enlightening me on this Jay, when I saw your heading I wasn't sure if I should be reading this or not lol. xxx
Cheryl, I will always try to harness the sailor in me so it will be clean. Thanks for stopping by and again I wish you a most successful 2018. Jay
You can make it anyway you want Jay, I do not embarrass easily lol.
You are welcome though and the same to you as well Jay. xxx
Thank you for the post. I knew what a screw was, (movies).
Have a very happy New Year, for your and your family.
That also included fur babies.
Hi there
Well done on post no. 75
Great post and thanks for sharing
For me there is only one and that is............ WA
I think that encapsulates everything that we want to research, we all here recognise that abbrevation from a distance, it covers a multitude
Cheers and best wishe for 2018 and beyond
Cheers PB
Hi Jay, great story, great piccys too.
I've been an Under Writer in Insurance providing insurance policies for people under the guide lines of each Insurance Company.
I've done an undercut in my hair dressing days where the hair underneath is shorter than the top hair, it allows the top hair to curve around and downwards.
Lots of Unders heh?
Thats all folk!
Jae
Interesting info Jay, very cool!
All I got is SSA, SSD, SSI, OHO, ODAR, AC, FDC, ALJ...The list could go on and on with industry specific acronyms but I got
nothing fancy like Pollywog, Shellback and Blue Nose! ;-)
Congrats on Blog #75! "Grape accomplishment" ;-)
Did I use that (Grape) correctly?
Cindy, I recognize some of your acronyms but not all. It is incredible that everyone has terms, etc.. that can drive the normal person crazy when trying to get something done. Yes, BZ or grape work. Jay
I was a few degrees off of becoming an emerald shellback... oh well just shellback is enough for me.
Malachi, getting doused in 38-degree seawater after being smeared with Crisco wasn't so bad, it kept the other stuff off you. Jay

Awesome Jay. With two brothers former Marine Corp, brother in law former Navy, two sons former Army, and Air Force here, when we all get together Thanks Giving or Christmas, we need multiple interpretations just to say; pass the tators.
Great thought provoking stuff Jay.
Bless You,
Sam and Deb
Sam and Deb, wishing you a Happy New Year and appreciate all you and your family have given. Success in 2018. Jay
