Island Of Misfit Fur Babies - Challenge Blog Day 6 of 7

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer was made In 1964 and as a child was the must-see television special every year. Of course, when you have only 3 channels, specific shows mattered and you made every effort to see this show and The Charlie Brown Christmas.

The most memorable part of the program to me was The Island Of Misfit Toys and during my life I have always tried to see life, in not only my shoes but also those less fortunate.

Whether we have been successful is unknown but I hope someday this effort is taken into account but if not, I know we made the right efforts.

Having arrived home from South Carolina last night, I have adjusted back into family life with my bride of thirty (30) plus years and our current fur babies who of course were happy to see me.

Unluckily, our fur babies age like our two-legged loved ones and when I travel and return home I observe how the kids are running a little slower, jumping a little lower, and have mistakes more often.

We have always taken in fur babies that were abandoned, in poor health, or were on a disposal list as sad as that sounds. For this reason, I consider our home an "Island Of Misfit Fur Babies".

I could list the animals we have had over the years but presently the eldest is Buddy Flash who is a Jack Russell age 13 and although he has significant health issues, he is not in pain and we are thankful he is still with us.

  • Buddy was rescued from a yard 150 miles from our house when we lived in Iowa. We drove to pick him up on a Saturday during a blizzard where he was chained up in a yard without shelter and the owner no longer wanted him.
  • We picked him up 12 years ago this winter and planned on taking him to the Humane Society on following Monday. During the drive home, he curled up around my neck and my bride of thirty (30) plus years forbid me from taking him in after she met him.
  • Although anti-social and abused when we picked him up, we were able to mold him into the family. Sometimes, he would revert back to gremlin but he had a home.

Buddy - The First Weekend

  • Throughout the years, he has become an irreplaceable part of our family who enjoys traveling, camping, riding in the UTV on trails, walks, moling, and eating anything and everything.

Buddy After He Hurt His Paw

  • Our most memorable adventure with Buddy was probably three (3) years ago when he cornered a skunk in our backyard and my bride of thirty (30) years, Scrappy, and Buddy were all was sprayed while I slept and came inside to share with me.
  • Even though he has physical challenges, requires a special diet, and is given insulin shots twice a day, Buddy is still an active part of family activities and will go camping with us tomorrow morning.

Buddy At 13 Years Old

Buddy is part of a long list of dogs and cats we have been blessed with during our time on this big blue ball called earth. I am happy that we have been an "Island Of Misfit Fur Babies" and hold a piece of each of them in my heart.

We are in the middle of the holiday season and isn't it great to impact somebodies life no matter if they stand on two legs or four legs. I love it and when possible I empty my pockets when I pass a red kettle and bell.

  • What touches your heart during the holiday season?
  • Do you have a special fur baby that stands out in your memories?

Thanks for stopping by and I wish you health, safety, and success. There are many great and some sad memories when you are fifty plus going on fifteen.

I will be back in the fold on Sunday night when I finally return home full time. The laptop is limping along, the sciatic nerve will get straightened out riding the ATV, and it looks like I start my new 9 to 5 job on January 3rd, 2018.

Yaeh, all good. Buddy is a good looking dog. It says a lot about you and your wife to have taken on so many furry friends.
My dear old tiny poodle is limping along, a bit deaf & and finding it a bit hard to see our legs as they come upon him, so we take care not to step on him.
I dunno but that ATV could really shake things up Jay better have the hot water bottle handy when you get home.
Looking forward to hearing how your new job is. Do write & tell us.
Cheers, cheers, & more cheers.
Jae

Jae, thanks for stopping by and the weekend went well and playing catchup. Understand watching out for the little ones and it gets harder as we get older. Love them all. Will provide an update on job ASAP and hope I have the final word in the morning. Jay

You gave me a much needed smile J, my friend!! I loved this one...hearing about your fur babies and adventures with them. What a fortunate lot of fur baby misfits. I'm a misfit myself. Wishing I had a groom of 30 years!! ;) Sigh! Oh well...was not meant to be.

Aside of that, I'm enjoying being with my dear friends. And their Son Brian came home for his dad, Lenard's birthday on Sunday..we actually celebrate tomorrow cuz Brian will have to head back to Portland soon. He and my son Jeff (Jay) were close friends growing up. And ironically live close now without realizing it. (Portland and Hillsboro, OR)

Anyway...so enjoyed this post my dear friend!!

Good to hear you got another job. Hope it's a better one for you. Thanks for sharing your heart and the fur babies. Love 'em!!

We have 2 fur boys here that act like teenagers...rather look like mini horses...German shepherd and German hunting dog/pitbull mix. Messy today on account of the snow. Beginning of a white Christmas.

Looking forward to the trial being over.

Have a safe silent night J...

~E :)

E, great to hear from you and it has been a crazy few months. glad to hear you are getting through your challenges and a white Christmas always helps. Will talk soon, playing catchup. Jay

I am also a dog lover which started when I was only seven years old, (that was a very long time ago!). I also had some instances of rescuing strayed dogs and abandoned ones. Doing this leaves me some self accomplishments and I feel proud about it. I wish you live longer so you can continue your good deeds and animal advocacy!

Renato, We all have accomplishments we are proud of and some not so much but protecting all innocent beings is key. Thanks, Jay

I've only had two pets but the unconditional love they give is a feeling that can't be duplicated. I'm thinking Buddy was lucky you found him...but maybe it's the other way around.

Enjoy your weekend,
Debbie

Debbie, thanks and it is more rewarding for our family I believe but the babes may disagree. Thanks again, Jay

Very good reminder to us Fur Baby adopters.
Bless You,
Sam and Deb

Sam and Deb, the plan includes protecting the innocent right. Thanks, Jay

Hi, Jay.

I can relate to your post. I think I'll write a post about it...my response is too long for here. I started rescuing dogs when I was 8 or 9, and rescued the last one (Leia, the one I still have) last year.
Carol

Carol, that is great and I will read as I work through the 500 plus notifications from being on the road. Jay

I wrote the post on Saturday and got a message that I can't write 2 posts in the same day. Thought it would have been posted by now. Do you think I should post it again?

Carol, try to post again. it will not post on its own when you have the one post per day limit. Gets better after 90 days. Jay

You're so sweet for adopting them all!

Ivy, Thanks for the comments and I hope you have a great weekend. I think the adoption process is mutual. About to shut off so we can take off camping in the AM. Time to take the ATV on the trails. Jay

Enjoy the camping!

That's a great story Jay. You both are very compassionate people.
I have had taken in several dogs through the years as well. Dealt with one dying in my arms. There is no feeling like being there when a loved one takes their last breath. Even if it's a dog. Very sad.

I hope and pray that you can get some more quality years form Buddy. It's a pity that they can't live forever :).

Christmas is a time when lots of people are depressed too. Saw a case of that today. Some just can't deal with the "joy" of the festive season when they are dealing with many personal problems.

All the best of health, peace and success to you and yours!
David

David, Thanks for your comments and it is tough when you lose one and you are with them as they pass over the rainbow bridge.

Our last big dog rescue was my compadre who traveled with me for work, vacation, camping, mowing the lawn, etc.

We could not bring another big dog in the house for years until Buddy and Scrappy started slowing down so now we have Roxy. 90 pounds of 18-month-old dog that thinks she is a Jack Russell.

Be good. Jay

:)

That’s great you kept the hound. They appreciate it and you could only imagine if he didn’t have you. Your are right that this time of year and every time of year compassion is necessary.
Trevor

Trevor, Thanks and always give something if you can (money, time, etc...) Jay

Have had about 5 Guinea pig/hamster fur babies . You only get about 15 months with them. Every rapid heartbeat is precious!

Mike, Agree totally. They add to our life. Jay
