Forged By The Sea - The Power Of A Tagline

Good afternoon and I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

As I play catch-up from being on the road, I have had the pleasure of watching my NDSU Bison win a playoff game and I have the Army VS Navy game playing as I work on WA notifications.

It is a snowy game in Philadelphia and Navy is in the lead 10 - 7 so "Go Navy"!!

Army - Navy Game 2017

Although I am working WA, I listen and when I hear something of interest I of course stop and pay attention.

This afternoon, I saw a new Navy commercial that struck my interest and the tagline is "Forged By The Sea".

I thought that was extremely solid for a tagline and through further research it home even further since advertising in pointed at the Centennial generation and the full monty for this campaign is "From The Depths To The Stars - Forged By The Sea".

Wow, I am sold and the link below provides more information. If I were not Fifty Plus Going On Fifteen, I would join the Navy again.

  • What do you think about the new campaign with an investment of $457 Million?
  • Do you think it promotes a great vision, would you visit the site?

Wishing you health, safety and security.

Great football game...not in your favor as Army pulled it off.
Love the tag line...forceful and adventuresome.
Debbie

Thanks Debbie. I am good since Air Force was not in the mix. I like the tagline. Jay

A dollar figure in a headline always grabs more attention than just saying, "The Navy Invest Money Into Targeting." Numbers are always a good draw. If they had wanted to catch more attention, they could have placed the number at the beginning of the headline.

Headlines are important and there is good training available on writing good headlines. You can also use a headline analyzer like this one:

http://www.aminstitute.com/headline/index.htm

You can use that one to analyze your own headlines. I found that only one of mine falls into the "sweet spot." Jat talks about good headlines in this training: I also saw a blog post here at WA in the past few days about writing good headlines, but I don't remember who wrote it. I'm sure you could find several if you do a search for them at the top of the page.

I'm glad you got home safely. Enjoy your day!

Anita

Anita, thanks for the response and I do not fly home until Thursday (ugh). All great catches by you and nice links. It is funny how your mind conditions to blogging, websites, etc... Jay

You're welcome. I guess I just assumed you were home since you are working.

I would love to get some work done tomorrow while I'm getting my infusion, but my doctor's office doesn't have Wifi for the patients to use. Most of the patients are not there for as long as I am, and most of those who do wouldn't use it anyway.

It still isn't going to keep me from requesting that they set up something in the future. I'm there for 3 to 4 hours. There's no television either. :( I read for as long as I can, but after a couple of hours that is hard to do. The IVIg makes my vision blur. I could manage with my laptop though because I can zoom in on it.

Good luck getting them to provide connectivity. Take care of yourself. Jay

They did sign me in to the office's system, so I am happily working away!

Great news. might as well be productive right. Jay

Yes. And it will pass the time in the future. She (the manager) said that there was no problem doing it since I am there for 3
to 4 hours each time I come in. She even clicked the box that allows the computer to save the password to connect automatically.

I think the tagline is appropriate for the marketing audience they are reaching out for and It would certainly peek my curiosity. A little more research would make it worth checking out this offer. Nice piece of work. I too was watching the game. Good game it was. Thx

Thanks and an enjoyable power football game. I thought it was quite interesting also (tagline). Jay

I totally dig it bro! It's more indicative of the true nature of sailors rather than some wishy washy PR campaign as the past one was. One reason I miss living in VB is because of the Navy presence. You guys rock!!! :-)

Bob, it was fun!! Thanks for stopping by. Jay

Good Morning Jay,

That line has a good catch to it, I like it. I read the article and of course, the Navy has to adapt to modern times and go online. I am not surprised the line of 2014 was not accepted well, to me it sounds so overpowering again.
I have a dear friend in the US. I met him in 1983. He was on one of those big warships at that time having 5000 young man under his command. A lot of responsability and difficult. They were always sent out to the hotspots on our earth.
I bet your bride is happy you stay home.

Have a great Sunday, Taetske

Taetske, great to hear from you as always. The end of my navy career was when I returned home from a 6-month deployment in 1994 and my daughter did not know me. I retired in 1996.

Love the bird farms (aircraft carriers), we took many pictures of the undersides of the vessels. Jay

I just checked Sid's Curriculum.
LtCol. McLaughlin served as the Executive Officer of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines until his assignment in June of 1984 as the Executive Officer of the 22nd MAU.
He is an old boy now, 8 years older then I am, so going on 17.
He told me that that was the difficult part, having 2 kids and seeing them like every 6 months if.

All the best, Taetske

Thanks.... it was. Jay

Great line, really.:)

Vera, I totally agree.

When I saw it, I just sat there and said, how do you grab the attention of a gamer, give them a bigger and badder game. War games on a ship meet this expectation.

Some of them may be shocked when they end up chipping paint.

Have a great night. Jay

I am retired second-generation Navy submariner, so I'm not as familiar with the "New High Tech Navy." But my son is currently a submariner, and how things have changed. I think the new slogan is describing this exact transition between what the Navy was... to what the Navy has become. Although I am with you Jay, I would reenlist in a heartbeat to serve my country, it would truly be a learning curve!

I would agree about the learning curve. I was on the Billfish, Newport News, Canopus, and Dixon. What were you on?

I served on the Lexington for decom, Tautog, Dallas, Birmingham and the Honolulu. Enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks.... so did I until the Nato ops being run from the east coast. Thanks, Jay

Hi Jay,
Well the advertising is pretty exciting. Forging young people's personalities & aims in life is a good thing. They DO become better for the training. Courageous & persistant, will make good on-line entrepreneurs.
Interestesting blog, a bit different.
Cheers, Jae

Jae, it comes down to research. The Navy is betting $457 million on this. Wow. Jay

Yay NAVY! With you all the way Jay

Thanks Mike. The clock is ticking down on the game. Jay

I very much prefer our old slogan "Join the Navy and see the world." (Of course, very few people know the rest of that slogan -- "Meet interesting people and blow the crap out of them".)

Bob, agree but we would get in trouble now. Jay

True - Much like Strategic Air Command's official slogan "Peace Is Our Profession" and its unofficial second part "Thermonuclear Warfare Is Just A Hobby". :=)

Bob, you got a great chuckle out of me with that one. Again, I need to watch myself or I start going sub sailor where there were no rules but I am sure there are now. Jay
