For hundreds of years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a concept that has evolved from science fiction to implemented technology during the last 100 years. Much like many of the technology ideas depicted on numerous Startek series, AI has become a reality.

As a child, I remember watching 2001: Space Odessy and being frightened about AI in the 1970s, being amazed that Big Blue beat a chess champion in the 1990s, and being impressed when Watson beat two Jeopardy champs in the 2010s.

As AI becomes more commonplace in our daily lives, we need to ask how this disruptive technology will help or harm us. Numerous resources provide a high-level view of this subject but being a middle of the road person I prefer a neutral opinion highlighting both sides of the story.

The Forbes Technology Council recently posted a solid article that discusses the potential pros and cons of how AI will impact society and considering projected investment in AI over the next couple years exceeds $45 billion and more than $120 billion by the middle of the next decade.

Perform a quick search on AI predictions and the variety of projections is incredible. One of my favorite AI prediction articles was written by Scoro, and the AI capability appears to answer every challenge we experience. I have included high points below.

  • Computers will solve all known problems
  • Machines will become our best friends and advisors
  • The future can be predicted using analytics and data
  • We will become technologically enhanced using cyborg components
  • Humans will have superhuman capabilities through symbiosis with AI
  • We will be able to upload our minds to the cloud and become immortal
  • Manual work will be a thing of the past as robots meet our needs
  • In the end, we will need to reassess humanity as we currently know it

Love it or hate it, AI is here to stay, so it is imperative that we learn how to utilize AI best and how it may impact our lives. Time magazine singularity between man and machine will occur by 2045 so its right around the corner.

  • What are your thoughts surrounding AI and future predictions?

Our potential appears endless, and with singularity occurring in 2045 it looks as though there will still be room for those of us that are fifty going on fifteen.

Thanks for stopping by and thinking about AI.

Hi J-
I’m not sure what the effects of AI will be in the long term, positive or negative. I guess it will depend on the intent of the humans who input the information. That is the biggest variable in the equation.

KyleAnn, There is the potential for garbage in, garbage out or you can make numbers say what you want but I believe rules implemented in AI will look for this to remove. Who knows and exciting times are in front of us. J

Like any technology...let's hope it's development is for the good of mankind. AI in the wrong hands by people with the wrong intentions can be worrisome. But used for the right reasons, the possibilities are exciting.

Debbie, the company I work for has done some incredible things with AI that could improve life but my concern is dumbing down of people. On the flip side, you are removing the potential for error though. Thanks, Jay

It really is amazing. We've come 17 years from HAL 9000 in 2001!

Mike, it is incredible and the company that I work for 9 to 5 has bet the farm on AI. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the remainder of your weekend. J
