I'm not super familiar with that theme but I know quite a few of the themes from that particular vendor do not provide that functionality out of the box. If you don't see it somewhere in the theme settings (which I don't think twentyfourteen has) it leaves you with two options.

1) Look for a theme you like that does have that option. Remember you can preview what your site looks like before switching to it. You will have some setup to do after you swap themes, unfortunately as some setting don't go over when you change.

2) Create a child theme for twentyfourteen and code it to display yourself. This is an advance topic and if you do not have a bit of a background in coding is not something I would recommend. If you do go that route, search for help in google on editing the content.php file for your particular theme.

Hope this helps.

How do you add comment dialog box on in twentyfourteen theme?

Do you think "handyman tools" is too broad a subject for a niche? A site that addresses homeowner DIY'ers and tool choices, etc.

You'd certainly have an audience but you need to identify the audience more so than the product.

You have an excellent start by thinking homeowner/DIY'ers. That is your target audience and you may be able to narrow it more by thinking new homeowners, tools for the DIY'er that has everything, specific types of tools or DIY'ers .. electrical and plumbing come to mind as not many want to tackle those without help.

I ma a homeowner and DIY'er and am looking forward to what you have coming for you niche and on your site.

ROCK ON!

E

Thank you for the input EKautz! I know there are finer items in this, but I wanted to cover the whole ball of wax, as I am also a homeowner (5 times over). Just wondering where to start. Electrical and plumbing is a GREAT idea! Thanks again!

Hey Steve
Not sure where your target audience is but just be aware that it is illegal to do your own electrics and plumbing in the UK unless you are qualified to do so - you have to employ a tradesman....

You got it, my pleasure Steve.

Just keep in mind you have a much better (and more willing to buy) audience if it is narrow and specific. You can always write articles about wider topics after you've really defined your niche and created an audience.

E

Hehe...yes, I am aware of that. Just get a mental block sometimes. I have two affiliate businesses but I never had to concern myself with this focus. I just use the site(s) available to me. Thanks again for your help in pulling my brain out from that dark spot ;)

Oh that's interesting. In the states laws very depending on what code a municipality adopts. For the most part anyone can do the work but it must be inspected by a certified electrician or plumber.

Honestly most folks just do the work themselves and don't get an inspection when they are doing small home jobs. New builds must have inspections.

lol - Don't we have some states that don't even require annual vehicle inspections Steve? For some reason Texas comes to mind.

You can do it (electrical) here in the U.S., but you have to check codes if you are to do anything major. If you do it wrong and there's a fire caused by electrical or you go to sell your home, you will be fined. It has to be correctly wired and certified by an electrician, but you can do it yourself. Plumbing, they don't care about.
I know in Germany (and perhaps elsewhere) you need to know how your automobile functions and to be able to repair it if necessary, in order to acquire a license. We are a lot sloppier here...hehe!

Absolutely correct, Ekautz! Most do their own work on minor projects, but there are many that do not know how. That is where my focus will be. I would certainly NOT recommend doing major work without at least the guidance of a certified tradesman!

I live in Texas (I have satellite, so you may not hear from me for a while, with this storm coming). We do have annual vehicle inspections here, but no state tax ;). Home inspections are rather lenient. Kind of like wetting your finger and holding it up to check the wind...

lol - about the lenient inspections and the wind test.

I just seen that storm on the news, I hope you don't get it too bad. Stay safe.

E

Thanks! We should be fine. If not, I'll wave to you from my rooftop as I float by your place (wherever that is)
I just found out that this storm (hurricane) is the most powerful on record! Sustained winds of 205 MPH and gusts to 245. YIKES!
Wherever you are, take care and have a good weekend!

I seen that too Steve. Definitely keep safe.

I live in western NY about an hour from Niagara Falls. We'll be ok here until winter (21 feet of snow last year) another record.

E

Thank you! I am originally from N.Y. Born on L.I. LOVE upstate. My brother and I used to scuba in Lake George many years ago. I lived in Western CT., too, so I know about snow... Small world, eh? Hope you guys don't get too socked in this winter!

You're welcome Steve, and thank you.

I spent about 10 years in MA, a year in MD and a couple in SoCal. I almost took a job promotion in Lubbock TX - imagine that. Definitely a small world.

I'm in a similar position with Interior Design - I can write across a massive range of topics - a good position to be in I think but not sure if my site is going to end up looking too eclectic!

Hmmmm...I see what you mean. Have you received an answer yet?

I'm not sure it was a question really, more of a comment. I think I'm going to stick to product reviews of good quality products for the home and general advice and tips without getting into things like re-designing spaces, patios/outdoor design, electronics/tecnology type things. Think I will stick with lamps, rugs, dishes, towels and the like...
