Sales Talk

A week or so ago I came across the all-famous sales-person. He wanted me to change power companies.

Although the power network is state driven, the power delivered is privatised. This means there are a lot of different companies running electricity firms with different price models.

Some use monthly billing of a certain amount and a low price per kW, other the opposite. There are those that use a stable static price and those that go all variable with what is going to be the general price to buy power for.

An important side note here is that Norway produces 100% energy through water, wind and sun (mostly water and wind).

I think it is a weird system generally and I think it is scammy, but it is the way it is.

Anyway, so there was this guy I met in a supermarket that really wanted to sell me this crazy deal that ONLY he could sell me, because on the internet site of them it would be more expensive. I checked the price, it was indeed more expensive on the website where I can also order it.

So I came with arguments like:

  • I am happy with the place where I am currently am getting power from
  • I am paying very little, I bet I will pay more with your company
  • I don't buy anything like this, I do research before I buy something

He came (of course) back with selling arguments as "we are the cheapest, we are the best, we deliver the best service, we deliver the best power etc etc etc."

The more I defended myself, the more angry and annoyed he got - which in turn pissed me more off too.

So I didn't buy into it, because:

  1. I felt there was something fishy about it, something hidden was kept away
  2. I don't like angry/aggressive sellers
  3. I don't like the offered variable price

Thinking back about it now, made me realise something I should perhaps have told him there and then. but at least was worth sharing here at WA:

"A Good Product Sells Itself"

I think this also is true to Affiliate Marketing to some degree. If you write a good story (or a great objective review) and you got a good product, it should really sell itself.

We see this in the big world as well with certain brands, such as Apple and Tesla.

What is your opinion on this? Do good products sell themselves, or are big marketing commercial campaigns necessary?

I become very defensive when approached by aggressive sales people. I refuse to be "sold". I only buy something when I reach out to a company. Regarding our sites we have to attract the readers...with good content...that wants to buy our stuff.

When people get angry or upset when trying to sell you something, there is usually something they are hiding or they are not able to sell their respective product/services based on it's quality or reputation alone.

I pay more for things I trust in and I certainly don't buy from pushy sales people or people that don't feel as though they genuinely have me in their best interest and want to help me.

Definitely would have walked away from an aggressive salesman. A good product with good information to promote it, will sell itself.

Thanks for your opinion, Tania.

I did indeed walk away. Checked them up on reviews and found lots of negative feedback on service and invoices. So I stay far away from that firm.

Have a nice day.

Good Products + Trust = Confidence in Not Being Sold

so a good product and trust in the product or firm means not selling it?

Selling is different than being sold. Of course we want to sell. But the buyer doesn't want to feel that they are "being sold" something. Having buyer's remorse, feeling that it wasn't a good deal or worthwhile, or that the seller somehow misrepresented the value of the product - that's what I meant in "being sold." :-)

Good points Steven. and yes I agree

thanks for your reply, Brad!

True statement about "A Good Product Sells Itself". Trust also sells and it would appear as though your contact was anything but. Thanks for the share. Jay

heh.. I didn't trust him for sure. But did he trust me? Definitely didn't trust the firm first-hand. Too many of these firms have very small letters stuff.

Steven

I agree with you
Trevor

Thanks Trevor!
