Google Image Search Has Changed

Maybe you have already noticed it, maybe not. I did at least. There were these funny colourful buttons on the top when I was looking for some images last week. I wondered what it meant, but it seems its an update to how we can better search for images in image search.

It probably also means that their search engine is capable of detecting what images are about, for example:

  • what colours are the main colour for the image
  • What is the image about mainly
  • Does it contain people, faces
  • In some cases, who is on the image

They also seem to use colour codes within search. Same colour means similar type of thing in image. As you see above banner and top are related, so are infographic, business model and landing page. That might be true actually for affiliate marketing, not for any other type of business.

On mobile search, which is what google is focusing most - if not all - of their attention on, they have added certain badges on some of the images.

For example a recipe badge is placed on an image of a pizza that you have published an article about on your recipes website. These badges are automatically placed as long as you use structured data cards within your articles.

The following types are currently supported:

  • Recipe Markup
  • Product Markup
  • Video Markup
  • GIF's get automatically batched and do not require data

It is going to help users quicker to find what they are looking for and it will send more relevant traffic to your website.

They, as always, cannot guarantee (this is what we call Google Disclaimer) that every image of your website will have a badge added to it, but as long as you keep to the rules etc and do the things (structured data) there is a higher chance they will do so.
