I think the comments below have answered your question. Just to add,
1) as an affiliate marketer, the ultimate goal is to bring your site visitors to the merchant site. Whatever they purchase on the site will be credited to you.
2) Cookies lifespan varies from one affiliate program to the other. For example, Amazon let's the cookies within 24 hours. You can extend this if you direct people to their Cart but many don't like the flow. Other programs their own cookies time frame.

Different affiliate programs have different 'cookie life'. Some cookies like amazon only last for 24 hours, while others could last 3 months. Meaning, if they go back to that site within that 24 hour or 3 month period and purchase something, you will get credit for it.

The second question, it depends on the cookie length. When someone clicks through one of your links, the website leaves what is called a cookie on their computer. It is measured in days.
In the case of Amazon, the cookie length is only 24 hours so yes you would lose commision if they went back 2 days later.
BUT there are tons of other programs where you get 7 days, 14 days, a month, a year to get a sale. Check out Shareasale, Clickbank, Target, etc for longer cookie length programs
