Site Speed For Mobile - 1, 2 Check

This is what Site Speed is all about - highlighting your mobile page site speed.

Mine were consistently in the 19-30s range while the desktop site speed was in the 80-90s range. I did not want to change my theme at this stage in the game, so was advised to deactivate several of my plugins.

Which helped a little....

It occurred to me to click on Google Site Speed within the Site Health page of my site. This took me off to Google itself and it highlighted which photos were large and needed to be optimized.

Plugins were suggested so I tried one...then Site Support said the plugin I chose would interfere with Site Speed working. So I deactivated and deleted the said plugin.

What to do? Fortunately, I thought of the media library and discovered there were some dud photos with 0 bytes taking up some space. At least 1.5 pages worth. So I deleted all of those.

After 3 hours of toing and froing with Site Support and making adjustments, the mobile Site Speed jumped into the 30-50s range.

I know I still have work to do, but at least that is better than the 19s I was experiencing.

Google Site Speeds suggested I change theme...What do you think?

Is it wise to change themes even when Google Adsense is on the site?

Update: 21 August

I inserted the Adsense code back onto my site and it is working perfectly. All is fine on the Good Ship Stella...

Hi Stella,
There are certain themes that are more mobile friendly. Themes do make a difference to your site speed.

Please, before you decide to change your theme, if you wish to do so make sure you back up your site first. This way you can always go back to the original theme, if you find the new theme has not helped with your mobile speeds.

Best wishes,
Michael

Well Michael,

I got real lucky and found a theme that looks better than the first and is extremely responsive. As a result, my mobile site speeds are now in their 70s. Yay!

It took me til 10pm last night to get it looking as I want it, but at least all of my widgets from Thrive Themes are also in place.

Only the Adsense code disappeared...

Hi Stella, glad to hear you got a responsive theme and your mobile speeds are up to the 70 mark. Great stuff.

Best wishes,
Michael

What is your theme? My mobile speed is really low.
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I chose Panoramic (free version). It is very responsive and kept all of my Thrive Theme widgets intact.

You should try it. I also optimised my images with Kraken Image Optimiser. Together these options shifted my mobile numbers from the 19s to the 70s.

Hope this helps.

Stella

Thanks Michael!

You could try the plugin called Smush which should help optimization of your images.
Michelle

I have changed my theme now and everything is running smoothly. The new theme is great and very responsive.

All images are now optimised and my mobile site speed is now in the 70s.

Thanks for your suggestion though, Michelle.

Great job looking for alternate ways to improve speed.
Jerry

In the end, I changed my theme.

I had no choice but it looks great now and overall site speed is ranging between 70-100.

Which is fantastic.

Deactivate all plugins and check site speeds. Re-activate one at a time and check site speeds after each. You will probably find one plugin causing the whole problem. I have 25 plugins and my site speed are 100's on desktop and mid 90's on mobile.
This tutorial will help also. Let me know if this corrects your problem.

Make a living, make a difference.
Mark

do you have amazon ads on your site? I think it's slowing my site a lot

I do not use Amazon, Facebook, or Google if I can help it. They all 3 are out of control and need to be checked. I will not support their political agendas.

Mark

Does having that many plugins affect your site health? When I have one too many plugins my site health goes from pretty good to getting better.
Michelle

I do not even look at the plugin portion of Site Health. As long as my Site Speed is great with 25 plugins, I am happy. Watch the tutorial I left above.

Mark

Thanks Mark,

I actually did that, but it only improved my mobile site speed to the 30s.

I have changed my theme and the mobile site speed moved up to the 70s and desktop 90s and 100s.

Phew!

Great! It should be easy to get it from 70's to 90's. Mine was in 70's and it was one plugin I could do without. Seems themes and plug ins are in a constant battle.

Mark

Thanks Mark,,,We just need to keep on top of the amount and type of plugins we use, don't we?

Stella

The battlefield changes daily in the plugin war. lol

True!

Guys, i just think that speef isnt important..if you want to have good, quality and nice looking bloh you will have to use plugins.. much more than 5.. and i was just wondering what is witth better blogs.. like this one https://www.entrepreneur.com/ , i bet everyone knows for them.. and they are on google page 1 for makr money online keyword.. and guess what? See the photos

Well, it seems that this person has a very well optimised site and also uses SEO to rank high.

The reason page speed is important to me is that most of my traffic comes from Pinterest and they are on mobile for the most part.

If my site speed is slow, it will upload slowly on their phones and they just bounce off my site very quickly without reading it. Which is what was happening.

On the Monday that I changed my theme, I had more than 450 new visitors to my site in one day.

So site speed really does make a huge difference. The faster the upload the more traffic you get, the more money you can make.

The person who has 25 plugins may have ones with light weight. A person can just have 10 plugins and they can be heavy weight for a site and slow it down.

Get my drift?

Yes I get it of course, I also try to speed my site as much as possible which is 63 for mobile and 96 for PC.. which I think is pretty much OK.. today someone posted some site for feedback and i went to it.. it was awful because It loaded without fonts and any designs at first, and after like 10 second fonts and design changed a little bit which was very bad for me.. I mean, it look good in the end, but at first, its awful.. i checked page speed for that site and it was 98/100 .. which is perfect.. But my experience is very bad.. so I wouldn't always stick just to google site speed.. What is more important is user experience.. And I always try to load my site by myself on mobile and pc and for now i think its good enough..

That's a good idea - to check out your site on mobile. I am not using the internet on my phone so could ask a friend maybe.

Good suggestion.

This is good to know... I will stop dwelling on it so much.

Hmm, mine mobile site speed is also from 35-55 and i think its okay, pc speed is 90+ all the time.. and i am on like 9-10plugins, try knstalling wp fastest cache plugin.. also on site manager turn site speed from accelerated to extreme..

However, amazon products are slowing down a site pretty much, and minifiing css and making fonts readable even befora full loadin is what i need to learn and fix it..

Hi Petardz,

I have tried everything including extreme site speed...I may have to change my theme, but this is rather sad as I am used to this theme and it looks very presentable.

But then again, I don't really have a choice.

Thanks for the suggestion though...

I did the theme change and everything is now running very smoothly for mobile site speed and desktop. Numbers now in the 70s for mobile and 90-100 for desktop.

Which is how it was before June. I am very pleased with this and couldn't ask for more. It was well worth sorting it out most of yesterday so that I can get my Pinterest traffic staying on my site.

They are mostly on mobile, you see.

Thanks for all of your suggestions though!
