Cereals, Magazines and the Purple Cow
In this week's live event, Jay's lesson covers creating great Pinterest graphics.
It is no surprise that the key objective when creating your pins is to make it stand out.
Therefore, typefaces, colors and contrast makes a lot of difference.
Jay suggested for us to checkout the supermarket aisle for cereals and magazines as we can learn about good designs from there.
What does cereals and magazines have in common?
- Good use of colors and contrast
- Typefaces are clear and readable
- It is design to stand out and get your attention
About the Purple Cow
The first thing that came up to my mind during the webinar after Jay mentioned the need to stand out was Seth Godin's purple cow.
Godin tells a story about driving through the countryside. He was amazed by the sheer number of cows that he saw while driving past them.
But then something happened.
Novelty effect usually wears out after a while. There were so many of them and they all looked alike and he soon stops noticing them as the herds became boring.
Thatβs when Seth realized that in order to stand out. You need to be truly remarkable and a cow would have to be purple to stand out.
He then applied this same idea to marketing and the legend of the purple cow was born.
How Can You Stand Out?
We learn that we need our Pinterest pins to stand out with better Pinterest graphics.
Does your website STAND OUT?
There are millions of websites, authored by millions of writers with dreams similar to yours.
Whatever you write need to be remarkable. It needs to be radical even to stand out.
If you want readers, you need to stand out of the herd and be a Purple Cow.
Take some time to reflect and ask some questions:
- Do you get feedback from your audience?
- What makes your niche website different from other sites?
- How is your writing different from other writers?
- Would you read your blog?
- How many shares do you get?
- Do you know what others are writing about?
- Do you know what trends publishers and agents are looking for?
Then, Go make yourself REMARKABLE and STAND OUT!

The more visitors will come compared to other posts on the first page the more search engine recognizes your post authority. This is my analysis and opinion.
You made a good point. Ranking helps a lot as it gets your remarkable article in front of more eyeballs.
