Over the last almost-week, I have been COMPLETELY absorbed in this website stuff. My house is dirty. I left a pile of unfolded laundry on the counter for over two days. There are dishes in the sink. WA: you have created a monster!!!!

That said, I was describing this new obsession to one of my friends, and found myself realizing I picked a crappy-to-monetize niche. Clothing and fashion websites are a dime a dozen.

What I'm wondering is whether anyone on here started with affiliate marketing and moved into product creation (rather than the opposite direction). Not saying I necessarily want to start a clothing line, but it's the only way I can foresee making money from this niche in the long run.

Or, barring that, is it really best to focus on websites that recommend $600 vitamixes (and the like), where you know you're getting a good chunk of the profit? I'm trying to decide which one to develop next.

The monster has found her way to success. Wishing you the best with your website.

Hey Sylvia. I started where it says to get started and just kept struggling to pick a niche that really tugged at my heart.

I finally realized that my heart strings were tied to being able to make money on the internet on the computer so Affiliate marketing made sense to me and I Love WA and all of the awesome people here.

That is when I switched gears and began the bootcamp. I believe that was the right decision for me because now I feel motivated and want to learn HowToCashInOnline.

I'm doing the bootcamp first and will then focus on niche market training. My niche since my days in MLM is helping people to make money online.
Great post, keep em coming! :-)
Cheers
Richard

Sporkypie,

I do both affiliate marketing and also created my own digital product which I sell on my blog. You don't have to pick one or the other. You can monetize your site anyway you want. Creating a product, collecting payments, delivery and customer service of said product is a daunting task for most newbies. So that's why affiliate marketing is more appealing. But it doesn't mean its your own monetization choice. The principles from the content and SEO standpoint taught here at WA will still apply.

Don't focus on the affiliate products that just pay the most. For years I remember when people told me you can't make any serious money with people paying you a few cents on the google adsense ads I use to promote. And I literally was making tens of thousands of dollars per month with it for many of years until Google started to be stingy with their program.

So if i just decided to promote only companies that paid me a higher commission I would have missed out on that money. So you can make up smaller commissions with volume. If you're following the training properly eventually you'll have hundreds and thousands of people visiting your site per month. If only a small percentage of them take action on your affiliate links you'll see as sizable income even if the commissions are small.

It's not to say you can't promote high ticket items as well. But I take the philosophy of trying to have affiliate options that appeal to different types of people. Some people won't blink an eye at a large purchase but there far and few. A lot of people have no problems trading in contact information so I can get paid with pay per lead programs as well. And obviously you'll have people that won't mind making small purchases. Either way I try to cover the spectrum in what I promote on my pages.

Just don't assume you can't make good money on smaller commission items. Because you will be leaving money on the table. Again focus on a niche where you know you can provide value, will be able to write on for years to come and obviously has good products you can recommend. It shouldn't be the other way around where you thinking of a niche based on the highest commissions. That tends to be the philosophy of the shady affiliate marketers that make a quick buck but don't have staying long term business. So it all depends on what your goal is.

I hope that makes sense.

That does make sense, and it's a good reminder that this sort of stuff pays off in the LONG run. And if I want to keep up the momentum of a site, it has to be something that interests me.

I'm glad it helped give you perspective.

You may be right about your niche. Clothing may be too broad of a niche, but if you drill dowb far enough, you may hit on something. Maybe collectibles from a certain tv show or sport. Original otems of your own, of course would mean you keep all the marbles. No worries. Yoy still have options. Go through the training. That's anybody's best advice here.

Also, check out some of Jay Neill's video trainings.

Thank you for the feedback! my niche is clothing for a specific body shape for women, but that's still probably too broad and common. I'm going to treat this website as my "learning experience" and monitor it to see if I end up with any traffic or sales, but it probably makes sense to start focusing elsewhere once it's done.
