How many words should go into affiliate blog posts?

1,000 word minimum, and over 1,500 words is best seems to be the consensus. Leave a comment if you disagree and tell me why.

For me, it was REALLY hard to write long posts in the beginning. I had two (false) assumptions:

1) No one would want to read something that long.

2) It's hard to write WELL at that length, because concise writing is superior to rambling.

For 1, well, that's on us. We have to make it interesting enough to keep a reader's attention. This means short paragraphs, good headers, pictures, and, critically, something to say.

For 2, guess what: also on us! We can't just cheat and turn everything into a horrible run-on sentence because it jacks up our word count. Not without the cost of losing readers, at any rate.

When a blog is poorly written or full of typos, I click out. I go somewhere else for the information.

When a blog is full of pop-ups, screen overlays, and multiple invitations for action, I click out. But that's another topic for another day :)

Agree. I also thing as long as you find ways to space it out, it's ok

Sporkypie
Totally agree...write clear and concise with no distractions.
Dave

My challenge with this has been how to reconcile these two things: 1) the need for a lengthy word count, and 2) my desire to say something well, and clearly.

The solution is simple. Instead of plumping up my two or three good ideas with bad/rambling writing, I have to add more ideas and areas of discussion to my articles.

This process has also forced me to reconsider the assumption that people don't read anything closely online. Some do.

And if they're buying what we're selling (ie: if our content is specifically targeted to an audience in the decision phase of a purchase)...they're gonna be interested.

Kid if you wants something proofed before you put it out, I would be glad to do it. You can send it to me private if you want.

Good points. I think the quality of the writing...long or short....is the key. Debbie

This is good information. My posts tend to be short and sweet and get to the point fast, because I hate to waste people's time as I hate to have my own time wasted by long dissertations.

That's also why I dislike most webinars. You have to sit through an hour or so of talk to hear about something that could be summed up in writing in a few paragraphs.

Perhaps I need to rethink this consideration. Perhaps our readers need to have information provided more slowly. I would like to hear both sides of the argument. Why 1000 to 1500 words?

The explanation I've been given for longer posts is that google assigns them more "authority", and gives sites with longer content preferential treatment in rankings. So, this is just another aspect of the numbers game.

Thanks, sporkypie, that makes sense. Authorities are often long-winded.

I've heard this often enough that it is something I aim for. I think it is OK to have shorter ones too as long as there is a mix.
Erica

I really hope this is true. I don't think I can go back and extend every single article I've written. On the other hand, if the shorter ones consistently get less rankings, it might be worth doing.

Hi, I think halinphilly has nailed the answer on the head. Irv.

I'm still not much of a blogger, maybe when I gat through the course, and the hours are less at my day job, I will gat into doing blogging.

I think every blog should to be as long as it needs to be in order to get the point across as economically and to be compelling as possible without putting your audience to sleep. Inject it with humor when appropriate and a few images to keep the page looking interesting.

My posts vary in length... somewhere between 300 and 2000 words.

I never count the words, but my first blog was 2262.
I'm guessing that's okay...check it out
