I think nobody knows for sure from the search engines point of view. They will not tell you and I think they claim there is no difference, as I remember there is such a statement by Matt Cutts, but I would also agree with Moritz, it is how people see it.
Kyle says in his last blog that com gives you more chance for a better ranking.
There is a good video lesson about this subject and Moritz is right, it won't affect a website rankings but it does effect somewhat the trust your website is initially given by visitors. Dot com addresses are more common and hence more popular. When people are typing a search term and guessing at a domain name 80% will choose dot com before anything else.

It doesn't matter that much for rankings, but I would always try and get a .com domain.
There is only one exception: when I create a website for Germany I use .de which is the related country code top-level domain (TLD) in Germany.
Most people will expect a .com, especially when you are targeting the USA.
They will remember that domain easier than another TLD.

HI Stephen, I did some research and checked with several people and it really doesn't seem to matter. Both .com and .net are well known and well used by many people. The important thing is to be able to choose a domain name that reflects what you are looking for. Also, both .com and .net are equally good at SEO. Good luck.

Thank you Wayne. I have one in mind that really reflects what I want but only dot net is available and the owner of dot com is not using it just holding it for a price that I would not pay.

I had a similar situation, Stephen, and the person wanted a price that I felt was outrageous. I was going to go to dot net but in the end, I chose a slightly different domain name that I could accept under dot net.

Regarding rankings, search engines focus more on the relevance of your domain name and content over domain extension. Whether .com or .net it isn't really going to matter much.
As for building a following, I believe a .com has an edge. It has an established familiarity with people because it is more recognizable. A .com tends to commit to a user's memory better and overall has a greater online presence. I believe this is important when competing with a niche site.
Whenever possible I would always go with a .com. But that is not to say a .net wouldn't be just as successful.

I was working on one of my sites late last night and today when try to log in through site manager it goes to a blank white page with my domain/wp-logmein.php in the navigation
As Katie said, try logging in via your WP login page, which you can reach by:
http: // yourdomainname dot com/ wp-admin

It might have been a glitch if after a time you still cannot put in a support ticket, you can also log in through Word press
Same thing happened to me last night. I was playing around with adding a new user and ithemes security settings. Must have done something wrong.
Anyways send a support ticket into WA and they will fix it for you. Took them less then 10 minutes. Thanks Guys.
