Is A Creators Dilemma A Bad Thing?

You are probably going to think I'm going to talk about Google's creation, but that isn't exactly what this is about.

As creators we may experience a dilemma. There will always be another creator we will look up to or admire their work.

When my daughter entered the Doodle for Google contest a few years back, I thought she did a fantastic job with her idea.

The concept of her creation was how she saw the future.

With the image that she created, in a nutshell, she saw the future as science would allow people and their pets to travel to any galaxy.

Me being the mom, I thought she did a great job with her idea. Unfortunately, she didn’t win and she didn’t even get that, unfortunately, email noticed either.

Anyways, she was bummed and I’m sure thousands of other people who entered the contest were too.

There Is Only One Winner

She questioned her talent and me being a mom, I had to encourage her to keep doing what she enjoys. I had to explain to her that there is only one winner.

I also told her that we watched a lot of contest and who we thought was the most talented one didn’t win and despite their loss, they managed to do some amazing things with their lives and talent?

No One Really Loses

The only time we lose is when we give up. Acknowledgement is great and it can boost our confidence.

But the reality is we have to inspire our own inner being to stay encouraged.

We could never please everybody and what is someone else’s treasure may not be for another.

Before my daughter entered the contest she looked up other images that won and didn’t win that Google contest.

When my daughter saw another contestant’s concept who didn’t win, my daughter thought she did a great job and thought she should have won.

My daughter told me if she didn’t win, what the heck does Google want?

I told her, I have no idea and the only answer I could give my daughter was to just be you and do your best. Just like the girl who didn’t win, even though she didn’t win, you liked what she created.

She may not have gotten the recognition that she was aiming for but if you read the comments, other people thought she did a fantastic job too. You may not win either, but you will never know unless you try.

Despite The Undesirable Outcome

Despite the outcome that my daughter wanted at the time, she moved on. She’s in college now continuing on doing what she enjoys.

She did manage to get one of her art pieces in the spring show at her college. It may not be a big win, but it is an exciting step towards her future.

My Point Here

You know where I’m going with this, but I’m going to say it anyway, Lol.

Sometimes we may want something and it didn’t happen the way we expected it to be. We may not even get an acknowledgement that we wanted, but that doesn’t mean we give up.

Each time we put in the hard work and keep at it, we will have some exciting victories.

Most of the time the work seems so heavy and worthless, but once a victory happens, all the heavy load carried to get a victory will be forgotten.

My question to you is,

Did you ever go after something expecting it to go the way you desired and it turns out the exact opposite?

You are not alone. We all experience that before. Feel free to jot down your experience below, thanks.

I think your daughter should be feeling proud of herself...it takes courage to enter your artwork in a contest, at least in my opinion.

I've only recently in the past year or so joined a few small contests with my artwork...when I was younger, I never would have dreamed of anyone looking at my art, since I was extremely shy back then. Anyways, although I didn't win any, I did get nicely surprised that I placed up in the top 5 for one and 8 in another...I wasn't expecting to even place, but figured it'd be a good experience and also a way to get more exposure.

I figure any opportunity to get eyeballs on the art is worth a try, and it did help get me quite a few new followers. So, although I didn't win, I didn't lose either, lol.

Although your daughter didn't win either, she can still learn from the experience...and, I'm sure there are people that would love to have seen her artwork win instead of the one that did. When they recognize her name on a piece of artwork she's done sometime down the road, they may also be more likely to buy it.

It's good to hear that she's continued doing what she loves...after all beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.

When it comes to art, some may love it, some may not, but that's okay...just appreciate the ones that do love it, and keep on working at it. In time, more people will find her art and among those, more that will be loving it as well. The more times people get a chance to see it, the better.

Anyways, that's my two cents and then some, lol. Thanks for sharing!
Best wishes :) ~Sherry

Hey Sherry, thanks for sharing your great advice. I'm not an artist and you make some very valid points, especially from an artist perspective.

I also agree with you that beauty is in the eye of the beholder especially when it comes to art. :)

Thanks for the update. You brought up some interesting stuff.

Thanks Elaine!

Images can open up the universe

Hey Michael so true.

My answer is simple, I wrote a few notes for a friend on depression, as her daughter had been raped and attempted suicide. The introduction i wrote would possibly shock you as it detailed a number of my personal problems, which made me very low, but hey I am here and still fighting fit years after the event.

Sorry to hear that, I'm glad you are fighting.
