Yoast has an excellent blog post about Penguin's apparent still ongoing update... From Searchengineland:

INCREDIBLY important information for everyone to know. As if anxiety was not up already just trying to get your site where you want it to be, you have Panda and Penguin updates to worry about too. However, it is important to at least have some idea what these updates mean and why they do them so that you can build your site in the most effective way possible to avoid ever having to worry about these updates. Sometimes, it is still easier said than done. So far, I have not noticed any major drop-offs and even some increases. However, I do get a little concerned because sometime my rankings seem to dramatically fluctuate from page 1 to 4 and back again. Thanks for sharing!

Love the build up! Was expecting a totally different article about Pandas and Penguins :))

I figured that, I have been noticing all kinds of ongoing changes with Google, I went back to Firefox till things get settled down..I was having some issues because my Chrome download was real recent and it wasn't compatible with the changes going on...All working fine for now.
Thanks for sharing this. :))

Not sure what all this is about but will check it out. Thank you for sharing Sonja.

Google updated there Panda software recently to help with smaller website owners, Penguin I believe was a follow up type of upgrade...need to look into it further myself...was on my list to do..but the list gets too big sometimes and have to narrow down the more important goals at hand. :))

Actually: Panda checks for websites that go "against" the rules of Gogle, and Penguin checks for websites with lousy content, bad backlinks (like linking farms) .. and generally bad site. Both Panda and Penguin will change the Rank of the website, thus affecting the current traffic the site is getting,

I did understand what Panda does, I just didn't go into detail...still helps smaller web owners that offer unique content was the whole point. Thanks for letting me know what Penguin does. :))

That's interesting. After realizing that I hadn't properly titled many of the images in my posts, I spent the last couple of days going into EVERY post and re-ID'ing each image one by one! It might've paid off since when checking site rank on Jaaxy this morning, 98% of all those I checked, had risen in rank. Some, by as much as 60 positions!! Unless of course the penguin update is what improved them?

Could be Penguin likes what you are doing :)

It may be, not sure...I keep seeing a lot of changes in these types of percentages. Could be the update or it could be what you do, or a combination of both. I am not certain. :)

Thank you very much Ruth for the great update. :) I heard it was released on 17 Oct. I think the crucial moment now is to load more high quality articles to our sites frequently and linking to more high authority sites from various sources, n more low competition keywords on our articles to rank high in Google.

Thank you for a good reminder, I am going to write more articles this week, lol. :)

Well Said!

Thank you for sharing good info, I believe google just realest Penquin 3.0 out 2 weeks ago.

According to the experts, the Penguin came out Oct 17th, but, according to google, it will still last another 1 or even 2 weeks this time around...

My understanding of Panda is that it hit hard the sites that used "spun" content and/or pages and sites that had irrelevant content solely for the Google Adsense revenue. Google has always maintained "to bring the best and most relevant answers to your search questions."

The 2 main methods of getting visitors to your site(s) is Organic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Paid Traffic. Algorithm's would have no effect on Paid Traffic yet, could destroy your organic Page 1 listing over night.

I feel it boils down time and money. If you have the money to invest and you have a good product that will give you a return on your advertising investment you should be going that route. By utilizing click tracking and metrics you will know what works within hours and then you can scale your advertising.

On the other hand is time, if you don't have the money you must put in the time and conform to Google. The challenge is it takes much longer to see the results and if a new algorithm is introduced. Go back and do it again.

Understanding just the basics of SEO, utilizing your keywords, publishing relevant content and strong backlinks will in time go far.
So, if SEO is your traffic choice and concerned about Penguin, Panda and what ever else is coming from Google then Yoast and Matt Cutts are the ones to listen too. Sounds like Sonja has a good handle on it also.

Read it, but what the heck is penguin or panda? Can you tell me?

Google Penguin is a Google algorithm that "penalize and decrease the rankings of sites that breach Google’s Webmaster Guidelines set the by the search engine."

Google Panda on the other hand is Google algorithm that "keeps those low quality and low content sites away from the top ranking results and give the actual quality sites their due."

Here is a site that explains it pretty good,
http://seoupdates.info/difference-between-google-panda-and-google-penguin/

Thanks, very clear

I am revamping some of my old sites, so I am curious if there is a place on WA where I can get opinions on my site? Thank you

davyrobot's reference is absolutely correct. It's a great place to get some feedback.

Thank you very much Ruth for asking, I also want to know. :)

yip what kholmes said

Thanks for asking the question Ruth, I would also like to get some feedback on my non-WA websites.......I value the opinions of others (well most of them...LOL!)

Seriously, I come from the school of hard knocks and bruises and actually welcome constructive criticism....its the only way to grow....the user experience is paramount in determining how good or bad ones website is!
~Arthur

Well said, exactly!

In the earlier training they ask you to add any new posts in the discussion room to get feedback, you could also ask to leave a comment. :))

I add links to my non WA blog posts all the time in my WA blog posts. Like David suggests, you can try the "Give and take" thread also. There are many places.

You can put a link in a WA blog post to a non WA blog and ask for feedback, or you can include a link in your profile as well!

I checked for broken links, 2227 checked pages, and only 1 broken link that was in a comment! Yeah!

That's great! I just used that link that McT left in their comment. It worked great, and gave a ton of other useful information on your sites performance for links and speed. I had only 1 broken link as well!

A useful tool for checking for duplicate content onsite and for broken links on your site is siteliner.com

This is not the only tool to check for onsite duplicate content and broken links but it does the job nicely. When you find the duplicate content and/or broken links you can easily correct there errors.

I have found quite a few broken links to affiliate products and duplicate paragraphs that you are not aware of because when you write on say different bread makers yourself, your writing style may come up with the same thoughts at times.

It may be only 30 words that are the same, however taking the time to make sure that you change the wording to make a completely unique article will likely help you to stay clear of google penalties.

It goes without saying that fixing broken links is important as the traffic you send to an affiliate program is not converting sales to you and you may be losing sales that go directly to the affiliate program owner.

Thank you for your input, and link! I will check it out right now. And yes, I didn't even think about the affiliate link part. They are VERY important to keep up to date!

I see that siteliner only checks 250 pages a month / per site for free. I have 2227 pages, so I purchased a premium check ... it's worth to see the duplicate content and broken links compared to my program... will post results when it is finished checking... thanks,

Cool tool, I just used the siteline.com and I found only 1 broken link as well. All my other percentages were really good except for site speed I have to figure out how to correct that problem. I have seen the tools to do this, just haven't investigated it yet.
Thank you for the link! Kim:))

Very impressive!

I was impressed :) Mind you, I do work at keeping them under control

Checking your links in your blog should be an ongoing task, it's not advanced at all. As we add posts with links in them, some of those links get broken, and SEO doesn't like it. So, I use an online site to check my links.... let me see if I can find some posts on WA about this :)

Please i don't understand

How does it work when you share (using the affiliate link) a page that is only available to a "premium" member with a none premium member? There is a really good article I want to

Another question might be, are we allowed to share premium content with non premium members? Not just how we share it. Just a thought.

As far as I am aware, there are affiliate links for sharing even on premium content.... but, I do need to double check this.

I think the best answer is that they can only see Premium Content if they sign up for Premium. that does not stop you sharing it by using a screen shot, but however you do it you need to point out that it is in fact Premium content and only available once you sign up for Premium (like the video courses etc.)

The thing is to always make sure you do not try to sell them on something more than they are actually getting as that leads to abandonment down the road if not immediately.

At this point I am not "selling", but content creating, thanks :)

Wow. Interesting question.

Good question, why don't you pm Klye and ask him about it.

Tha is a very valid question, have never thought it that way. Thanks for asking and sharing.

Thank you for the info

The best way to check if a link can be accessed by others is to send the link to your email address then log out of WA and old up the link if it opens then they can see it if not sorry they have to be premium

DUH, didn't think of doing that :)

They won't be able to access the content unless they are upgraded.

And here is how it looks like (at top before being logged in, at bottom once logged in - if they are Non-Premium users):
http://i.imgur.com/CifxAoC.jpg

If the way you describe content and the value it brings is sufficient, it could be a good "trick" to get some conversion though! ;)

Good luck! :)
Tanguy

Great, thanks very much, but then I can't use the content on my website as "content" only. I don't want to lure someone to a site they can't see. I hate it when someone does that to me. I wonder why we have affiliate links on content we can't share?

You can share all the content from the first course "Get Started"
to the public! :)

Concerning the rest it indeed require Premium access.
Though it's not always a "lure" depends how you present things on your blog article. You could explain the basis and make your own sum up/explanation on the theme and then invite people willing to get further on that topic to join you at WA! :)

You can make them aware of the Premium in advance. And trust me those who decide to jump into won't hate you, WA is awesome and it will probably help them a lot ;)

But I agree it have to be shared the right way.
Not "Click here to learn more"... "Oops, insert your credit card to access the content" :D

All the best,
Tanguy

Exactly! Like I said, I hate that when it is done to me, so I won't do it to someone else.

Best thing I can come up with i to ask a non member friend to go to your site and check it out.

That is a great question... They might just need to create a free account before being able to read it.

But even free accounts cannot see premium content :)

I have no idea then...:)
