Fads versus Trends

This morning I stumbled across an article in Entrepreneur magazine that discussed building sustainable businesses. It pointed out that some people get fad and trends confused. Building a business off of a fad is not sustainable . Yet following a trend can be a good thing.

According to Faith Popcorn, a marketing consultant, “fads are about products, whereas trends are about what drives consumers to buy products.”

As affiliate marketers, we are in the position to capitalize on fads as well as trends. If someone moves quickly enough with a niche website that focuses on a fad - they can potentially make money. The imporant thing to remember that the fad will not last.

Does anyone remember the pet rock fad? Cabbage patch kids? Beanie Babies?

Is "organic" a fad or a trend? I think it is a trend.

I sure do remember those past fads. Boy did they rack up some money for these companies. I agree but are money makers but trends are where the long term money is at. Thanks for sharing this Sondra.

Organic, trend into permanent lifestyle..
MC Hammer pants- FAD ; )

I'd say a trend.

Faith is right on the money. You can make money on both, but a fad is like "day trading" you need to watch the market everyday and know when to cash out when your profits are highest.

You can keep your money invested in a trend to "ride the profit train" much longer, but you need to watch changes as well.

Good points. Capitalize on fads knowing that they are not forever. I believe that organic is a trend especially as new evidence supporting organic comes to light.

Fad is a new word for me, had to search in the dictionary. I think organic is a trend, and a very good one; it will last.

I tend to agree with you about the organic being a lasting trend.

Thank you for pointing out that "fad" is not a common English word. I need to keep that in mind when I am writing for world wide audiences.

We have several shops where I live, which only sell organic food, and they are very popular. My wife buys almost everything there. This will only grow, people are becoming more and more concerned about their health. There is a huge pressure on EU from US to import genetically modified stuff, and this is completely rejected by ordinary people here.
