"A genuine, intense customer obsession" helped Amazon become what it is

Jeff Bezos, the creator and CEO of Amazon, credits Amazon's growth to a number of principles. One is a "genuine, intense customer obsession." Think about that for a moment.

We all know what Amazon.com is. Many of us here at Wealthy Affiliate are Amazon affiliates. What makes a great affiliate marketing website? Kyle teaches us that it is one that helps the customer find an answer to their question or one that helps solve a problem. For example, product reviews help people decide whether they should purchase a particular product or not. Will that product serve their need?

Think about Amazon's domain name. When Amazon was first created it was an online book store. Amazon was not a key word that people were using to find books. Unless they maybe were looking for a book about the Amazon jungle. Yet Amazon is a household name today.

Amazon has a "genuine, intense customer obsession" according to Jeff Bezos. I would venture to guess the same is true of Google. Google wants people to find what they are looking for when they Google something.

Will your website provide that something? Are you focused on helping your reader? Genuinely focused on helping them or is your primary focus on figuring out how to make money?

Today, as I was doing some research for my farm and ranch real estate website, I ended up reading several articles about Jeff Bezos.

Aside from the comment above, there was another recent article that I found entertaining.

When Jeff Bezos was in Aspen, CO for New Year's Eve, he helped promote one of his friend's western clothing shop by riding a horse into the shop. (Jeff Bezos actually looks really handsome in a cowboy hat.). Until seeing the article, I had never heard of Kemo Sabe, the western apparel shop. Yet I will certainly look for it the next time I visit Aspen or one of its other locations. There is supposed to be a Kemo Sabe shop in Las Vegas as well.

Riding a horse into a store. A small store. What a fun way for him to help his friend. https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-rode-horse-into-k...

Oops, I almost forgot. I found the quote about Amazon having a "genuine, intense customer obsession" in a Sept 2018 article about Jeff's announcement of this $2 billion "Day One Fund.". It is a philanthropic effort aimed towards helping homeless and preschool education. In this case, he says, "The child will be the customer."

What about you? How committed are you to using your website to satisfy your reader's needs? Your readers are your customers. In September 2018, Amazon's value hit 1 trillion dollars. The desire to ensure they have a "genuine, intense customer obsession has paid off. How much could you earn in the next 12 months if you had a "genuine, intense customer obsession?".

Best wishes for a prosperous and productive 2019.

Sondra

I see Amazon gradually going down the drain. They take undue advantage of consumers wanting cheapest price, so Amazon being wanting to be the lowest online retailer, is full of SUB-STANDARD PRODUCTS, especially in electronics and electrical goods. What's more, they are now making returns practically impossible, so you buy, its faulty, you suffer the loss. Then, how they treat staffs is appalling, even their affiliates. I remember our Loes here saying she doesn't do business with them because of their disgusting behaviour.

For a company, it is only a matter of time, as they will suffer the law of returns that compensates what is put out returning hundredfold. They were able to go this far because THEY STARTED WELL. Now they are full of themselves, and destruction can only come out of it. Amazon is not my ideal company at all.

Anyone who is interested in starting a website where unsatisfied Amazon customers can post their experience will get loads of traffic, which he can leaverage in advertising.

You have brought up some excellent points. I love the principles that Amazon has used to grow to the size it has.

However, their size is has created some "challenges" for them that need to be addressed. I recently opened a small brick and mortar retail shop that sells books amongst other things. I see their "weaknesses" as a bonus for my business.

It will be interesting to see how things progress with Amazon.

That said, I still want to ensure that I work harder to be obsessed with meeting my customer's and reader's wants and needs.

Sondra,

absolutely spot on to point to and remind us that the best of the best customer websites, the most successful by any measurable means, has an

obsessive customer focus that is genuine!

A principle for all of us to keep in mind! thanks! Marc

Thank you Marc.

If we want people to enjoy visiting our websites, we must focus on providing what they want to find.

very inspiring. thank you

Thanks! I found it so inspiring that I've written the quote on a sheet of paper and have it posted on a bulletin board so that I will be reminded of it every time I walk into my office.

It fits us, too, doesn't it? Customer first, because without the customer, there is no money. Treat that prospect well.

Exactly. As you said, no customers, no money. Legitimately earned money is the reward for helping people.

Wow! That’s awesome! Reading that makes me want to work harder. :)

I am glad that you found it inspirational also.

Sometimes we get so focused on trying to make our websites have links that will help us earn money that we end up overlooking the need to provide awesome content.

Very intresting good point just abuot in time thank you for sharing

Nicole, I am glad that you found it interesting. I hope that Jeff's quote about having a "genuine, intense customer obsession" will allow you and all of us WA members to have even greater success as we work on building our online businesses.

Sondra,

This is a good reminder of how we need to treat our customers. Most businesses who treat their customers as friends do better than others.
Our websites must keep the best interest of those who visit at the top of our minds.

Best wishes,
David

Very well said David. Last night, I spend hours trying to think of ways that I could better serve my customers. If we can ask ourself if we are doing that as we write and publish every post on our website, hopefully we will succeed in pleasing the customer in the end.

Thank you for sgsring, Sondra! :o)

Sorry typo.. sharing

Awe thanks! Those typo's certainly make us have to recheck our work. lol. I hate the typos that result from the automatic spell check programs. In this post, I had to go back and fix every instance of Jeff Bezos name because my computer automatically changed it to Bozos.

Lol. Same issue. The best is to check before sending but my finger was too fast. Also, iPhone auto correct but cannot blame as it’s my fault too. Ha.

Lol I hope you have a great weekend.

Thank you, you too Sondra! :o)

Great point, reminds us who we are writing for doesn't it? thanks Sondra, Cheers Cass

Hi Cass. Thanks for reading. Amazon's principle about geninuing caring about the customer is important to any business. Yet, I think it is certainly even more relevant to those of us that have affiliate marketing websites.

the people are the most important Sondra. Another good post
Vicki

Thanks Vicki! I should be saying thank you. I was reading about Jeff Bezo's ranching background earlier today. After I read your great post, I was inspired to do this one. Our posts compliment each other I think.
