Who else here using Bitly link shortener?

I am using this tool to shorten links I share on social media. From WA lessons, to my own blog posts, I find this tool helpful.

There are many alternatives out there, some even allows you to monetize your efforts by inserting an ad before your viewers get to the target link you really want them to go.

But I really like this one, as it seem like the most popular and most trusted among the URL shorteners, next to Google's goo.gl

The frequency of my usage worries me that soon, I will reach the maximum numbers for shortened links per user.

Anyone using this, and if there's a limit to how many Bitly short link we can create in our lifetime?

One disadvantage of using a link shortening service is that you can't repurpose those links.

Suppose you are advertising an item model XYZ23 and you set up a link to go to Seller A. Seller A closes your account and so you switch to Seller B. All your bitly links are still pointing to Seller A and you can't change them.

Pretty Links puts you in total control and you can name your links whatever you want instead of a jumble of numbers and letters. Then when Seller A closes your account you just change your Pretty Link to point to Seller B.

Oh, that is a very good suggestion! Thank you. I use Pretty Links plugin in my website, but the Lite version only. Is that what you are referring to?

Yes, I use the free lite version. There's no need to upgrade.

Thank you for sharing the described experience. Would you please elaborate the specific merits from using Bitly-for speeding up the links? If yes, how much difference? By 25-100%? This specific info will help.

The primary purpose of bitly links is to reduce the number of characters needed to link to a URL. This is particularly important in character-limited situations like twitter.

Bitly links won't speed things up. Since they are shortened links which need to get redirected through another site, they'll actually be a bit slower than a direct link.

Hi! BobBarr,
Thanks-a-million for so concisely explaining how Bitlydoes and answering my question. You are so kind. I appreciate that and I learn more now.

If you don't mind, I love to network with you.

Best to health and success,

James

Hey Gomer,

There are some very good reasons NOT to use link shortening services.

One that comes to mind is that unscrupulous people may use these types of links to hide their malware links ... and, many device-users have had to learn this the hard way (experience this first-hand).

So, my recommendation to you is to find a link shortening service whose shortened links will display the destination link when a user mouses over the shortened link. One such service that I found is checkshorturl dot com.

Twitter automatically offers long links shortened, so you really do not need to offer shortened links in tweets.

Hope this helps you.

Would you please tell me how you have used bitly? A long time means 1 yrs or 3 yrs or just 3-6 months. If for years with no adverse effects, that is good to use. I value your specific experience.

Thanks

Oh, that is exactly what I am looking for! The exact answer, I mean. With exact figures of limit. But that is nice, at least we know now that it takes 10,000 before we run out of privilege and it resets every 26 days.

Thank you very much for this!

Still, Bitly links is needed, as the purpose for this tool is shortening the links for social media sharing. The plugins we use for our sites like Pretty Links are still useful but it takes with it the long domain names we have in our sites making it inconvenient for sharing in social media especially Facebook. Of course, Twitter has its own shortener, but you still have to paste your long URL in a Tweet Box where character number is limited. That is the reason why Bitly is still needed.

Hi James, I included a screen shot of the limits within bitly. This means that I can have bitly create 10,000 short links or 500 branded links.

The link that you get from the 10,000 is a random jumble of characters.

A branded link is a custom link that I buy in bitly that makes the short link more personal to my brand. For example, if I am into bodyweight fitness, I could buy the site bwfitness as my short link. Bitly would add random characters after the custom address specific to the site that I am sending people to.

I hope this helps.
