I'm a week in and just getting started and I wanted to go ahead and "share" my website on my personal Facebook account. I was going to have my friends and family share it also to get some likes and boost start my traffic.
Is this frowned upon?

I know it seems like a silly question but sometimes I feel like I am walking on eggshells around all of the rules of google, Facebook, indexing, keyword stuffing, etc.

Also, can I share my website on Fanpages (related to my niche) that I am a member of on Facebook? Or is this a no-no?

There are some good answers below especially from John. It is unlikely you can or should post or share your website to other Pages (Fan). Pages are "shop fronts" or "alternative website" for someone else's business. You will not be a "member" of a Page, you will have only "liked" a Page, sort of being a follower of that page. Groups are a different matter .. you maybe a member of a Group and you could share you website in the Group provided it is relevant to the Group or, if it is not, that you are known enough in that group that the other members would help you. You will also need to check that Groups rules.

Hope that helped and made sense.

Cheers, William.

Yes, you should be able to start sharing your progress on other social platforms, make sure you are "playing by the rules", though. I've realized it is better to follow along the training instead. There is a course dedicated to social media marketing here that is going to help you boost your traffic which is great.

Great, good point. I'm getting a bit too excited I think... training is key!

I created a Facebook page for my website and have copied a few posts to it. I have just started inviting 'likes' -- mostly family. I know Facebook has rules against using personal accounts for promoting businesses. Still, I don't see anything wrong with asking your 'friends' to 'like' your business page. Not sure about your second question.

You can definitely share it your Facebook account, No problems :-)
As for fan pages, you will have to check each pages rules.
Sometimes they only allow you to post promotionally once a week, and sometimes not at all.

This is great to hear :)

I think I remember seeing that certain fanpages have stricter posting rules than others so I will beware...

Thanks for your help!!
