Is this For Real? - My Website Got Noticed - By Whom?

Last Update: March 30, 2019

I don't know whether to be excited or not. This is all new to me, so I would like some advice or suggestions please.

I was babysitting my friend's small warehouse, so I haven't been that active in the last two days inside WA.

Yesterday, I thought I should check on my website emails, to see if I got any notifications from any Affiliate Programs telling me some good news, but I did not.

What I did receive, however, was a little strange. An unusual email from, the Marketing Manager of the New Zealand School of Food & Wine.

She asked to meet me in person because they noticed an unusual bump in their Google Analytics reports that showed many of their online site visitors came from a little website, and in further investigation found out it was mine, so they wanted to know more about me and wanted to meet me to discuss something.

Let's back track a little here and let me explain why, I got this email.

Just before I joined WA, I had enrolled at the School of Food & Wine to gain my Food and Health Safety Certificate, to allow me to bake and sell my cakes from home.

When I was creating my niche website, I decided that I wanted to help other home cake artists do the same, and added the Food and Safety Course link inside my content, as one of my recommendations.

It was just an external link to their main page and I had only inserted, two or three links within my first post. I knew that I wouldn't get any money, as they did not have any affiliate programs.

Now, back to the email that I had received. I was actually quite afraid that I had done something illegal and was quite stressed. So I quickly replied that I was sorry and I will remove all the links, as soon as possible.

Fortunately I did not act on this thought, because, today, still very apprehensive, I checked

my site email again, to find that I had received another email which, this time came with an attachment.

You can see the response yourself here:

The attachment was an invitation to a formal lunch presented by their cooking students. I am asked to attend and to have a look around. They would like me to create a blog about their school.

I accepted the invitation - although I feel excited, I have no understanding of why I am.

Now, this is the part, that I ask you all, please to advise me on?

Has anyone here been asked to write a blog for a company? or has any Marketing experience?

So many questions running in my head, like: Do I ask for payment? Am I to expect payment? Or should I just build relationship first...

...shucks I am so nervous, and I have never done any sort of marketing either...please help me...

I will appreciate any advice or suggestion my friends :)

Ilaisaane

Snazzy this is an enormous opportunity!! Its Real!
Congrats, however RELAX and take a deep breath.....

Its time to start preparing. Its Game-time!
Prepare questions for your meeting, but remember you are a Professional. In the end, they would not have contacted you unless they truly believed you could add value to their business.

And when professionals add value, they always get paid, And get paid what they are worth. So you need to do research what is the going rate for similar bloggers and come up with a pricing structure.

The last thing I would recommend for your preparation for your meeting is to read my blog from last year, Note: I just realized this blog is from late March, I hope this offer is still on the table. Sorry to see this blog post late

CONGRATS! You should be OVER THE MOON excited!!!! Happy dance in the end zone time!!!! (oops a US football reference, I just realized from this post you live on the other side of the planet)

This is a most positive networking result. Accidental networking, but putting their link in your post was brilliant. And because you did it with a pure heart with no selfish gains it reaped Karma Gold.

I would accept the lunch date and blog about it. No mention of money, unless they offer to pay (mamma got babies to feed), then have a modest number in your mind to work with, but you don't have to negotiate too hard, the relationship is far more important. They can open doors for you to network with their clients and sponsors. And "Hello there..." folks who make food and wine "their thing" are definitely friends to have. Can you say Gordon Ramsey....

Build the relationship with them as I foresee it will be an awesome alliance in the future.

More blessings and good stuff!

Thank you my new friend, I appreciate your kind words. I have had the lunch and now writing their blog (looks like the lunch was a payment - beautiful with French wine). I enjoyed myself and was impressed, with everything. I have to finish the blog by tomorrow, which I am currently trying to fit into a cake niche lol...

I appreciate what you've experienced through providing external links to sources or causes, without necessarily expecting compensation for such a service provided. I too have in mind to incorporate this practice into my own site as it develops. I believe that you being asked by the school to develop a blog crosses a fine line between a charitable "stage," into one that becomes reasonable to expect for you, and the school/agency, to possibly compensate you. You should feel comfortable asking for something in return for any additional services (whether at a market or discount rate); or simply donate your time, if that is where your heart leads you. It's self-rewarding when you can sacrifice time and resources to someone in need; it's also important to keep some balance with personal needs as well. Hope your assistance blesses the school as well as you!

This is awesome. Take the opportunity with both hands, if I was you I would listen what they have to say and don't direct ask for a check. You are now making yourself knowing. And now they ask you to make a blog for there school. Normally they will automatically ask you if you want a compensation for your work. If you do it right maybe you will be them personal blogger and you will receive more traffic to them site and yours. You start to grow. Very nice

That is fantastic! They obviously liked the way that you wrote and can envision working "with" you. Who is the blog intended for? Write to them - ie: prospective students, the public keeping them updated on progress? I would think that the payment would be on the idea of contractor - how do they bill you? You'll never know if you don't try - best of luck! Ruth

Congratulations, your blog may be "small" to you but it is getting noticed and you are already considered an online influencer - this rocks by the way. The majority of my income is from influencer marketing and people fly me all over the country to visit their companies and attend events - all expenses paid and I get paid on top of it.

Yes for now as you are building up your name accept every little offer than comes in and share on social media tagging the companies, make sure you have an Instagram account and be active on it.

Instagram is huge for online influencers and some of my jobs are only for Instagram posts, not even on my website :)

Just think about it, if people are noticing your website then companies that are in your niche are going to want to be featured on your website. Build yourself up and you can start charging good money for influencer campaigns.

The job I am busy with now flew me across the country 3 weeks ago for a visit of their factory and I am busy with preparing their campaign now - it is for 2 blog posts and a couple of social media posts - I am being paid $1100.

Very exciting. At this point I would simply enjoy the lunch, hang out with your peers and LISTEN to the what the company has in mind. You do NOT need to decide anything right then and there. Remember, they are reaching out to YOU... so the play is in your court, in a sense.

They may want you to write a simple review... and you could charge $500 or something for a really good, full-page review. Perhaps you could write the review for free and cut an affiliate deal for any course takers the come as a result.

They may also want you to manage their entire BLOG! Which could be a $5,000 project!

So enjoy lunch. What happens next will be awesome.

I think after observing marketing for 20 years that some companies are actually changing the way they reach out. This is one of those instances. The least you can do is going enjoy lunch and see what they have to say. If they have gone to all of the bother to analyse their analytics and reach out the chances are they will pay you. If they decide not to then you will at least have had a great lunch. If you don't enjoy it I will have the soup please!

My advice Snazzy is go and enjoy it! Stop fretting. LOL. Let them do all the talking... you will quickly pick up if they want to take you for a ride or not. Usually, these big companies know they need to pay for services.

My guess is that they will have an offer on the table already - and then all that will be left is for you to accept it or counter offer it. Hehehehe. Holding thumbs it turns out a fantastic opportunity. Relax.

That is awesome! Congrats.

They are basically asking for a sponsored post, so either ask for a payment for said post or ask if they could do an affiliate deal for you. Think about what you want to ask before hand.

Maybe create a special package for them to promote the school. On your social media, on your website etc. Start with the highest ask and work your way down. (Ie. Monthly promotion with one blog, xx amount of social posts at 250 per month, way down to only one sponsored post at your desired price)

Negotiating down is a heck of a lot easier than negotiating up.

Just want to say a big CONGRATS to you Snazzy, it shows your hard work is already paying off. It will be fine to take the opportunity to meet them in person and explain what you do.
To be able to sell, you must help first. So, in my opinion, I'll suggest you don't bring payment to the fore.
I am sure they will get to it. Life comes with challenges and taking them up could open up larger doors to you. It doesn't matter whether you are a marketing expert or not. Being willing to work with them is what counts.
I wish you all the best. Please let us know how your meeting eventually turned out.

Hi Snazzy,

Tell them that you do affiliate marketing for a living or to supplement your income. Explain what it is if they are not clear. Then ask if they would like to increase sales by launching such a program. And you’d be happy to be a test case for them.

They already found out you got results for them. I think this could be a win situation for you and them!

Cheers!

If it was me, I would go for the experience and just build the relationship to start off. You never know what exactly their intent is and they may even offer some form of payment to you after all.

I would also agree to do a blog for them. Is the blog going to be something that you will do and then they put on their page or did they want it in your website?

Either way, follow your heart in this and let your conscience be your guide. Hoping for the best to you in this...and have fun!

It's good you're doing your homework for prep. You may have to wing some parts, if not all, of the meeting. And that's ok, too. They probably haven't ever done this before either, remember that. And if they ask you a question that you aren't sure (like 'how much would you charge'), just get the details of what they want and tell them you need to think on it and will get back to them with your answer. You are in the driver's seat.

Again, this is awesome!! Congratulations!! :D

Hello, Ilaisaane.
Congratulations on being presented with this opportunity.
If you go ahead and it's going to be a regular thing, I would ask for payment. Perhaps do the first one for free as a sampler.
For a while I was writing product descriptions for a tool catalogue but I gave it up because the money I received was not representative of the time I put in.
It does take up a lot of your time writing for someone else, you have to make sure your research is spot on and the posts are structured exactly how the customer wants. Plus you have to meet their deadlines.
I don't want to put you off. It's good work and it will also enhance your reputation as a writer. I would probably still be doing it if the remuneration had allowed me to give up my day job.
Best wishes,
Mihir Jhaveri

Why did you think this was something negative when they first reached out to you? And why are you saying it got noticed by the "wrong people"? lol. An institution like this reaching out to you thanking you for driving traffic to them is always positive. Don't be nervous at all. They've already taken a look at your site and no what you're about. Writing a blog for them will be fun. Just ask what details they'd like covered and what they're looking for with it.

A HUGE Congrads to you!

I didn't have to wait to read it in your 'blog' as I had a feeling it was something positive they contacted for.

It is a NO brainer. you don't want to miss out on an opportunity like this one. This is really an honor for you! This isn't something that happens every day.

This alone is 'payback' to you for all your hard work. Be proud of all your hard work, the knowledge you've gain and the skills you have to offer. You have so much to offer in your business and now this school wants a 'piece' of your knowledge.

You are truly amazing at what you're doing!

My advice to you, yes, whatever work you do for them you should arrange some kind of payment. The other suggestion I would offer is maybe you can create a relationship and maybe a link within their site. This could then benefit both you and them in the future.

Continue doing what you're doing because you're doing so many amazing things.

To all of us on Wealthy Affiliate, this is another positive sign as to the benefits this amazing platform can have on our future.

Have a great time and be your amazing self!

This is so great and you should definitely go! I think everyone should get paid for the work they do. If they are asking you to do a job for them I would think they would offer you some kind of payment or commission for getting them business later on.

One thing I learned when researching content writing and blogging for other company's is you have to value your own writing in order for others to.

Don't be too modest when you go to your lunch because you don't want to be taken advantage of.

Instead, think of the value of your work. For me, I would charge 75$ for 800 words, and 25$ for each additional 25 words.

Everyone has their own price and you should too. Think about what you would like to make money wise. I would expect that they aren't asking you to work for free. That would just be wrong.

Instead, have your game face on, be confident, and let them know before hand.

"I would love to do this, but this is my rate. We can negotiate if this is unreasonable for you."

It's natural to be afraid. Shoot, I would be too. But this is such a good thing and a great way to start building your business profile.

Congrats and good luck with this. I hope it works out for the best.

A huge congratulations to you! What an amazing opportunity for you. I don't believe in these kind of "mistakes", they happen for a reason and we never know what doors the universe will open for us. It's part of your journey so enjoy every minute of it!

Companies often out source to writers for blogs, copy write, site content etc. so absolutely expect to be paid for your time and expertise. I have heard of some being paid up to $1500 for posting 3 times a week. This could be a great income for you.

Just do your research about how much to expect, there are a lot of articles about it online, and don't forget the exchange rate from where you live to their dollar.

A lot of people don't know this outside of Au and NZ but they are huge foodies so I would suggest you do a bit of research on that as well, ex fresh ingredients, the chef etc.

Anyway, just a few thoughts
Wishing you all the success and please keep us posted about how it all goes

It is a great opportunity but be very careful. You can start a business like that as a bang but in a situation like that I would really get my ducks in a row before I go if you really want that account.

It's fun and exciting but remember it is business of course you should charge. Unless this organization is a charitable group and you can gain some monetary advantage by DONATING your services.

I have ventured into the website building arena. Here are some tips:
~Always own and host the domain. (this so you have ultimate control and can always sell it to them if there is a problem or someone else wants it from them you get paid!)
~Pay attention to how long it will take you to do normal maintenance tasks so you can charge correctly.
~Before you do anything you should find someone to practice with, Your mentor here at WA? and have them play customer and tell you what they want for a website and actually go thru building a site to the point where it is ready for content and marketing. Anybody that's good at anything practices and has a game plan. you can do it for free with a siterubix site.
~from JAY - pick a theme you like and go premium with it and build all your sites on the same theme so you can be a guru of that theme and it will be your signature. Todays premium themes are really awesome! You can make completely different looking sites with the same theme.

And then there is always just doing it for fun but remember there are people in the market that are trying to make a living doing it. Everything has a ripple effect.

I don't have experience with this but, I would ask maybe something like "what do they expect or are there certain things they want featured in the blog?" "do you need to meet a deadline or word count?" and maybe you can work out some terms and conditions.

Like if they don't offer payment, can they link to your site? or can you mention your name and or website address in the article you are about to write for them.

Sorry if there are any typos. I am typing from my cell phone. Anyhow congratulations...you are doing an awesome job. Onward and Upward!

Thank you my dear, for your constant support even when you don't think you can be of help, and that is what I truly appreciate about you and so many others, who have just popped in to leave a comment no matter how busy they are. I do not forget those who have been good to me. So I care that you stopped by anyway :)

You were in the right place at the right time. I say go for it and start writing for them. Not sure what I would charge if any at all at first. My guess is, they will pay you anyway. Judging on how well you crafted this post I think you will do just fine.

Way to go!

Thank you Cal - I was thinking maybe not asking for money but for them to pay towards a charity I support...it sounds crazy but thats what I feel I have to do lol.

Sounds like the right doors are starting to open up, awesome job! It doesn't hurt to see what they have to offer and to see what their long term plan is going forward.
Hear them out, take some mental notes, let them know that you really appreciate the offer and your time is valuable. Inform them you need a day to process everything.

They are reaching out to you. They are another company in your niche. No money has changed hands and you have a nice invite. Go along, enjoy yourself and discuss things. It might be beneficial, it might not, but if you don’t go you might be passing up a lucrative opportunity.

I have had similar requests myself and have acted on them. They aren’t sinister, they like what they see and are looking to foster a relationship.

Go for it!

You should get in touch with Lynne from South Africa.
She has done and I believe still does this sort of thing.
Another member is Erin (Henniston).

My opinion is to go for it and see what they have to say and of course you will want paid for your time and you should ask them about this.

Thanks for the shoutout Robert <3 I've added my bit and some links that may help her to build herself up as an online influencer - of course she is already half way there if she is being contacted which is awesome!

No probs Lynne and always happy to point people in the right direction and this time that direction was your good self.
Don't know about Erin though.

I'm still trying to get my new apartment sorted out.
A lot of work when you live on your own and I don't have internet access yet so have to use an internet cafe uptown.
I will get there eventually and meantime will do what I can.
Hope you're having an awesome Friday and the weekend to come.
Take Care.

It's been an awesome Friday thanks, great start to the weekend, but time for bed now!

Geez yeah moves are never easy and when you are handling everything on your own it can be really overwhelming. Good luck with getting your internet going!

Thank you Lynne - your advice was sent to me again by LisaBrack (she is wonderful, thank you Lisa!) who knew, that I had not seen your comment. I have just read it and OMG! you are awesome!

I know that everyone else's advice was all excellent and I appreciate every single one of them, but yours jumped at me for some reason - I think its the fact that you called it - Online Influencer - this is the first time I heard the label/term.

I trully appreciate your advice and I actually like that business role - An "influencer" - because I think that's what I am slowly finding that I am good at - being a sign post or giving a ripple effect to other people in the right direction.

I have been trying to figure out what I am to call myself - to the outside world. I am already getting lots of communities asking me, what I call myself officially, which is why I haven't really promoted myself as a brand.

Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart, and be sure I am going to follow all your blogs and training - so keep me on your list.

I am thrilled to bits and pieces for you!!
Other than my mother asking me to blog for her preschool website, I have not had this experience. Everything seems very legit. I would go to the school website and look up faculty. See if 'Hayley no last name' is a member.

Please keep us in the loop!

Best wishes,
Steve.

It sounds like you accidentally landed yourself a copywriting gig!

One of my side gigs is freelance copywriting. Creating and maintaining a blog for a company is one potential role of a copywriter.

I'm jealous, Ilaisaane! I'm always on the lookout for blogging opportunities and one just lands in your lap! LOL Good for you!

As far as what you need to know to run a good blog for any company,,, research, research, research!

Develop a relationship with whomever you would answer to as far as okaying the content. That way, you can have a more intimate relationship with the company's culture and become a subject matter expert (SME) on them and thereby able to more easily create relevant content for the blog.

Oh, and you should *definitely* be paid! Blog writers usually get paid quite handsomely!

Good luck with it!

Wow! That's so awesome!! Good for you! Enjoy your lunch and just see what they say.

I don't know if I would ask for payment, honestly. This could be about a bigger opportunity to build a relationship with the school which could lead to bigger things.

But, see what they want you to do, and perhaps they will offer to pay you in some way anyway.
