How To Stay Focused While Working From Home

Having the opportunity to work from home - either running your own online business, or working remotely for your employer - can be a real blessing. However, it does require some discipline to actually get the work done. Here are some quick tips on how to stay focused while working from home.

Have a Designated Work Space

Having some office space or an area set aside specifically for your work at home tasks has a number of benefits. First, it makes it feel like it's real. Secondly, the office should preferably be an area that's quiet, has a door your can close, and is set up in such as way as to make you feel comfortable and happy to be there.

Create a Schedule

Sure you can mix things up a bit and get other stuff done during the day, but most people will need some sort of schedule to keep them focused and on task. Make a daily ist of things you have to do, work out the approximate time for each task and tick them off as they get done. Don't finish the day until all necessary tasks are completed.

Be Sure To Take Breaks

Working from home should be beneficial. It shouldn't entail being enslaved to your computer or office 24/7. Take a short break every hour whether you want to or not. Don't neglect to eat lunch or go for a walk. A break can prove more productive overall than forcing yourself to just constantly churn out work.

Avoid Distractions and Shiny Objects

Things like social media, having the TV on in the background, constantly checking to see if you've made a sale or received any interesting emails are all distractions that will really make your work day drag on forever. Designate time slots for this kind of thing and make a conscious effort to stick to those time slots.

Do the Hardest Stuff First

If you knock off the most daunting and frustrating tasks first, the rest of the work schedule will feel like a breeze. You will naturally feel good about yourself, feel more confident and actually enjoy the rest of the day. Leaving hard tasks until later will just play on your mind, making everything else you attempt harder than it should be.

Reward Yourself

It's important to pat yourself on the back for a job well done and reward yourself. Life isn't all about just work and no play or fun, and it isn't all about just doing stuff to look after everyone else around you and never giving yourself a gift for all your hard work.

Rewarding yourself is just as important to productivity as everything else on this list. If you don't, eventually you'll feel like you're doing all this work for nothing and you'll burn out.

Hope you've found this post helpful. If you are lucky enough to work from home fulltime, enjoy the benefits, but also schedule that important work into your daily routine.

Darren, thank you for this very useful post.

"Do the hardest stuff first." It's good to have done the hard and most boring tasks first. I mostly try to do that because it's a good feeling, like you say.

I have read about how famous successful business people always choose to do the most important tasks first, whether these are hard or not. I suppose it is something to strive for, if we want to get really successful.

Wish you a productive day!
:-)

Thanks for reading. Glad you liked the post. It's human nature to avoid the hard, but more satisfying to get them done :)

I guess the most important is to have a room to which only you has access, which you can arrange as your office. And then it will be like working at any company. With all the other points I fully agree with you.

very good post thank you

I only read the. Old text but it is already inspiring to see you have such setup in your workplace that you currently have it at home.

Indeed, discipline is require and the key to have an achievable result in the disicipline where we should take time to create to create actionable item to rach our discipline morale.

That's not my workspace. Just an online picture.
