Important Information On Copying Content

Hi everyone,

Lately I have been catching more than a few of the beginners websites with copied content word for word from an affiliates website or a products review on another site or even the manufacturers site.

Now, either you are skipping some of the training or you are ahead of it because I know for a fact where Kyle and Carson stand on copying content and it is a simple no no period.

Unless I forgot what I learned I was taught any copying at all is not to be done. It will hurt your ranking and may even get you black listed and de-indexed from the search engines.

Here is a checklist to follow.

You can not copy:

  • Product descriptions from anywhere, including affiliate sites. ( Most say this in the agreement you agree to when you signed up with them. )
  • Product reviews from anyplace. You can do your own and use a template of choice.
  • Any promo from your affiliates sites.
  • Anything at all :)

It really is as simple as the last bulleted example. Anything at all, period.

Be original and write it in your words, your skills and be proud of it and publish it. This is what Google wants and the customers will trust you more if you sound original. If they see a paragraph description of a product and then click through to the affiliate site and see the same paragraph word for word they will not be impressed.

If anyone would like to add anything please do so in the comments :)

I use a couple of free plugins to help prevent plagiarism on my site: wordpress protection lite and WP copy protect

Now to figure out how to do it offline! :)

Awesome!
Thanks for the tips!

A footnote- Copying & Pasting links for reuse is OK. No harm-No foul there. And Thanks Shawn for the reminder, I'd been meaning to look up 2 things your post prompted me to do that. :-) Jon

:)

They teach this in school, lol! I have seen this as well and I am always amazed! I have on a couple occasions quoted Kyle, but I said I was quoting Kyle and used proper punctuation to indicate that! :) Thank you for sharing this!

You bet

This was very boldly and well said. There is a great deal of that going around. Thanks for sharing.

Just a heads up. :)

Hey Shawn,

Great post and I totally agree. People should think about what kind of value they are adding when they copy someone else's work. The answer = 0. What's the point of even posting if simply to reiterate what others have written?

This is why it's important to stay away from those auto posting plugins or software, etc. That is duplicate content that will get your site in trouble.

Some of these black hat techniques may work in the short term but won't last long. Google and other search engines will eventually figure it out and clobber websites that participate in these kinds of activities.

Having said all this, there is nothing wrong with using what others have created as a source of inspiration. Most ideas are really a mash up of what others have produced anyway but transformed with a different spin, etc. And it is okay to quote very small segments of content to reinforce the message you are trying to make. Just be sure to give credit when doing so and don't do it too often within a particular post.

Thanks for sharing.

Best Regards,
Jim

Thanks so much for the additional tips Jim, that is so what I love about this place. :)

I read a lot of books and get ideals for content from them and put it in my own words. I usually put a thanks and book title and author on my post when I do that. And a link to the book if I can.

That works :)

Thank you Shawn. Copying someone else's content is stealing. It is inappropriate, cheap and lazy. There is much more pride and need I say honor in knowing you have spoken from your heart. WA teaches the right way and so do you.

Thanks :)

I hear you on that, I am fixing some of my early and older content that I added, so far it hasn't hurt my indexing..but still needs to be revised...for me input in input out...Lol...
I did have permission from a member to use their WA testimonial....so I saved it and flipped a couple things around....I still didn't know how to do a screen shot at the time...I do know....isn't it better to do it that way as long as you have permission to use the information.....

That is fine, it becomes a picture and Google does not see pictures :)

Very cool, thanks...that was my understanding as well.

Hi Shawn, you should look at this ( I'm not one to dispute an authority )
I don't know if you use Alexa or not, but this site is very high ranking worldwide.

:-) Jon

Thanks so much for posting this. yes I know how to do this and I know it can really make a difference.
If you do not SEO your pics they will not be seen in the search engines.
Some cases this is wanted and OK, but as a rule you should take advantage of proper visual SEO efforts.
It is worth the effort.

Any training you care to do on this would be greatly appreciated, I bookmarked that site, but I prefer to confirm important subjects within WA. :-) Jon

I will take a look at what we have here available, if there already is some on it I will post it, otherwise I would be happy to create some :)

plagiarism gets ya chucked out of university too, seems only fair not to have your hard work copied, glad google is doing some good that way

Many I have seen the members just did not know it was not OK. They are not meaning to do anything wrong, but I know it is taught in the training not to copy. :)

that's nice of you to look over new websites and help like this ;)

Gotta call them as I see them though, thanks!

Well Shawn, you summed that up about as nice as it gets. Why put yourself into that situation where you could get yourself in a heap of trouble? This is a no-brainer, or at least I thought it was..... until seeing recent comments from those thinking it was perfectly acceptable. Thanks for posting, it's a nice reminder for all. Michelle

Thanks Michelle,
Sometimes we miss things and that is OK, as long as someone catches it. I do not mind helping people, and this is what I have been seeing lately :)
