Steve, you have a decision to make. I totally understand, as here at Awin.com we have a huge office in the UK as well as the US, so the extra U or the "ise" instead of "ize" happens every day to me.

So, if most of your visitors come from the US, they will wonder about your spelling for sure. If you are proud of being a Brit, take the time to emphasize that as part of your site's personality. That will explain away some of the differences. If you don't want to do that, then spell things correctly to US standards.

What is your first priority here? The decision is yours.

Yes, I think you are correct.

While being a Brit is not something I hide it's not especially important to my customers. I get around 75-25% split from US and UK traffic. I like mentioning it at times but it's just a sideline.

You are definitely right there is no right or wrong answer, just a style I need to decide upon and go with, and not for reasons of Pride or doing it the "correct" way.

Thanks

Steve

And remember gray for grey!

Hi Stephen, it is a perennial question, America is like a whole lot of countries all rolled into one, folks from Texas kind of roll a different way to folks from Chicago to folks from New York, they all kind of have these little nuances or little different ways of how they express their ideas and thoughts, just like the folks that are into different niches kind of have their own language as marketers it is all about learning the language that our audiences speak in.
The spelling English or American English, can be a mix and match thing, some folks are really pedantic about it, as long as we can hit that 95% mark we should be good. At the end of the day, it only affects the placement of a few words/letters.
Just two cents worth.

Hi Alex,

Yeah, that's one of the things. For me, it doesn't matter I can understand both and was of the opinion we all understand it so I should do it my way,

But being told I have spelling mistakes really took me aback! I didn't think people would think it was wrong but understand maybe some people are very sheltered to their way of things. I would never tell an American they were wrong for writing color (even though they are :)) It's just their way of doing things.

But going forward I need to decide which way to go!

Thanks for your input

Steve

I am English and proud of it but I do try to use the American spelling on my websites. Many of those reading it will have learned American English and spelling.

Either way, it is understandable to the English speaking population.

As far as the comment is concerned I would ignore it. I have had this comment on other websites and spammed it.

Derek

Hi Derek, As I said I use Grammarly and can easily set it to American English if that's what I choose.

Thanks for your input. Just trying to gather as many opinions as possible.

you have got to remember what you are creating your site for - it is your visitors!
they don't give a monkeys that you are british- french- italian- or any other nationality - is the content good, relevant, entertaining, educational and written in my language!
in my language - yep that means writing for your audience in their language.
you need to suppress your need to be english if your audience is american and use the 'z' instead of the 's'.
as i say you need to remember who you are creating content for - you or your audience.
Your choice.
Phil

Hi,

Yes, that is what this post is about. I am thinking of my visitors and trying to work out what is best for them. But refusing to be myself is not always the best way?

For Example, when talking Temperature I have no idea what 80degrees is but I know my American readers will have no idea what 26 DegC is so I ensure I convert for them. But I think most people know what colour and color mean!!!

I am still unsure, but need to make a decision and then run with it!

if your audience is prodominately american then i would add temperature if F then in brackets C.
i would use the americanisms as they will be reading without hesitation, if you use the british words - as with the opposite-- you hesitate at the differences and think - oh an american wrote this!
so it would be interesting to see if any americans have any comment on this.
good luck with your direction.
i know i am becoming more americanized!!
Phil

That's exactly what I do with temps DegF the Brackets for the C I do have British and European readers too.

I too would be interested to hear from some Americans? Maybe I posted too early while they were still in bed lol

I am atm leaning towards going all American. I think us Brits tend to be a little more tolerant of the differences...

Well, I am Canadian and I write colour as, well you can see how I write it. I don't pay attention to what Grammarly says about it either. I do about other words but not that.

Hi,

Thanks for that and well done on using your u's lol

Of Course, I don't care what Grammarly says. It is set to English English and as such agree's with me. But I can easily Swap it to American if I want to go that route.

My questions is more how my readers May or May not, respond to this?

It's about how to connect best with my readers.

Can you please everyone? You may please the Americans but you may offend some other person from another English speaking country. I don't think you will have problems with Canadians, we know about the different spellings but do all English speaking countries know about American spelling. I heard Texans were kind of bossy.

Hi,

My Main site is a Travel Blog and I mainly post travel information and Reviews on attractions and stuff like that. It's all very long winded and hard work.

Something else you can do is write some posts now, perhaps product reviews or an additional post on a location you've already visited, then schedule those to appear while you are gone. Then you've got new content going up regularly, but you don't have to make yourself crazy while you're on the trip. I too am a travel writer, and I know that you are quite busy on a fam trip, no time to write other things as well.

I wonder if it's possible for you to take photos by remote drone operation!

Absolutely possible.

The Drone I'm using has a very high-resolution Camera, for both 4k Video and High res Photo's. Even takes auto panoramas and 360 Photos. Incredible piece of kit.

I enjoyed this post and I do similar, but I really enjoy writing.

I am away myself for a short break this weekend with my wife and I shall be taking my tablet with me, because I can login, and do some work, like prepping an article or post at some stage

Providing the 'live' experience is also good and you never know who will read what you are writing or... what doors will open and, as long as you are disciplined in the time you allot to your posts it should not impact on vacation time

Yeah, my biggest concern really is what Keyword to target. As said it's a report of my day, so hard to think of a keyword and as it's probably about something I will write about properly, later on, I don't want it to compete with that?

Hi,

I have noticed a discrepancy in the number of pages indexed by Google and the amount of post/pages I actually have.

This is not the normal query of Google no

I’m having the same problem since a few days. I added two posts and they were indexed. Now I can’t found them on Google. What should I do ?

Thanks i will have a look at it.

Lags are common. There's always the Goggle help desk!

it could be due to a number of reasons,
for example a few are listed here
https://yoast.com/duplicate-content/

as in some duplicate content on your own site could be indexed increasing number of pages,

could be also due to hacks but It think webmaster tools should be able to detect it and email you (I only remember reading about this somewhere)

if no one can give you more help maybe do a search for things like
Good Index shows more page... and phrases like that

I noticed the same thing tbh

My Site is now 12 months old 100% site trust and has 70 posts and pages on it.

I know that is not a lot for 12 months but its over 3 times my other site (Mothballed) and

You have a lot of great tips below but I will address the competitiveness of your niche as you mentioned below, it's VERY competitive the travel niche.

When you have such a niche, then you must create way more than 70 posts in a year, that's not even 6 posts a month.

In a very competitive niche, you need 5-7 posts a week.

I know this because I'm also in a competitive niche, make money online and I'm publishing 7-9 posts a week currently and my traffic has soared this month and last month too.

Also, I've been consistently writing, my first 4 months only 8 posts a month, I hardly got any traffic. Then I started writing 12 posts a month, then 15 months a post... which then more traffic came but still it didn't seem enough.

So I cranked it up even more to now 30+ posts a month, and the traffic has hit highs of 688 sessions a day in my 15th month.

In a competitive niche, you need TONS of content. If you can't keep that up, you need a less competitive niche like Jay's Football snack helmet site which ranks #1 still with no new content on it.

Hope this helps you,
Grace

That should help.

I believe that your problem is examining g SERPS.

just because a word is long doesn't make that good long tail.

Plus Google is getting smarter nowadays. They are ascertaining a searchers intent.

What you are describing is not normal. Make sure you are doing everything in the above link and give it another few weeks.

I don't want to say that the niche is bad, but it is something to consider.

If you are ranking for other websites, you have some idea of what you are doing.

Finally, consider another traffic source. Youtube, FB, Pinterest, Twitter, etc...

Perhaps you and SEO just don't get along.

Hi Stephen,
I had a look at your site and I think it's fantastic. I do understand your frustration, but you've created a great asset and should be proud. Definitely don't give up... just need to take a step back, reassess and refine your strategy.

Reading through the comments on this thread I see that one of your keywords is "What is the Weather Like in New York City".

I'm not certain, but this might give us some insight into what could be happening.

Two things to keep in mind when doing keyword research are;

1. Jaaxy and the WA keyword tool gives us fantastic insight into what keywords we should be targeting... but the keywords can be misleading. This caught me out early on as well... but be careful of "exact match keywords".

In the case of "What is the Weather Like in New York City", you're going up against every site that includes the words "Weather" and "New York City".

You may be going after what some people call the "long tail keyword" by adding "What is" and "Like" and that can often give us odd results in Jaaxy with a low QSR. Not certain this is the case here, but their is some incorrect information as to what a long tail keyword is.

It has nothing to do with the length of the keyword... and for the best explanation you should check out Dom's article on long tail keywords So the first thing I'd say is to expand your keyword research. When you find one that looks good, have a look at all the similar keywords that Google might interpret as being the same thing and see what the QSR is on those.

2.Good keyword research must also include SERP (search engine results page) research. Jay did a great Live Training on this a while back but it might help... Before going after a keyword it's critical to research your competition. I've included some images below which show the P1 of the SERPS for your keyword.

The first thing you notice is that you're up against the current weather rich snippet. The second is that your competition for that keyword is what I'd consider impossible to beat.

Positions one and two belong to The Weather Network which has a Domain Authority of 84 and a Majestic Trust Flow of 72. They also have a high MOZ rank and 13 million plus links pointing to their page.

It's not impossible to beat those numbers, and you don't want to get too hung up things like domain authority... but they are good to use as a gauge. If they (or any high authority site) are ranking for a keyword that is slightly irrelevant to the search term, you can beat them... but in this case... Google sees "New York" and "Weather".

Moving down the SERP's all of the sites have extremely high metrics and authority.

Now, I'm guessing the intent of your keyword is not necessarily the "current" weather in New York, but the weather one might expect if they visit New York.

To go after that traffic you might want to expand your keywords to include "What's New York weather like in the spring (or winter, summer etc.)". Maybe use the word climate instead of weather. Or go after "how hot (or cold, or wet) etc. does it get in New York".

I haven't looked at the numbers for those keywords, but if you can find one that looks good, then go to Google and assess who your competition is... but also, determine how Google is interpreting that search term.

If it comes back to the weather network and today's forecast... then it might not be viable keyword to go after. You may have to refine things a little further.

You've got a great looking site and my guess is that it's a fun niche to research and write. It's also now an established site. Your DA is 9 and you're ranking for 68 keywords (I included this image below as well) so you're well on your way to success.

There are other things to consider... social media presence and are you using it to drive traffic back to your site. You might also consider some PPC (Bing Ads maybe) for critical pages to bring in some traffic which looks good to Google.

You also have a site that would be great for reference information with the potential for other sites to link and source your content. You might consider doing some outreach to some travel bloggers perhaps, and using a site such as HARO (Help A Reporter Out).

Just a few thoughts :-D

Hope some of that helps a little.

Also, not sure if It's part of your process (I'm always finding these glitches on my site as well) but check your mobile view. One of the graphics you have in your Maui article isn't showing up in mobile.

Hi thanks for this !

It will take me a while to digest all that. Its very kind of you to take the time for such a detailed analysis!

Honestly regretting waiting so long to bring this up.

As i said you have given me a lot to process and work through. As have others. Will report back soon.

Its worth saying my new york stuff was some of my first and my later weather pages take more of the route you were suggesting.

Well, you asked....

The first problem that jumps out at me is the titles of your posts. You seem to be targeting more than one keyword with each one, which makes it look like keyword stuffing. The titles are also very redundant, making for a poor user experience. When I read those titles, it makes me THINK that all you're trying to do is target keywords.

You want to make your titles compelling...likely, the reason why you're still dancing with Google (dropping in and out of the first page) is because your titles don't entice people to click.

Honestly, which would you rather click as a consumer if you wanted to know more about New York Pass: "New York Passes Comparison - New York Pass Reviews - Best New York Pass" or "New York Pass Review - Is It Worth the Time and Money?" I know for myself, the second one would get my click any day - the first, I probably wouldn't even consider.

Because your post titles are not enticing in the least (sorry), when they show up on the first page, people are not compelled to click. A low CTR (Click Through Ratio) is a major signal to Google that your site is inferior to the other results, and that is likely the reason why none of your posts rank well (Google favors sites with a higher CTR).

You can read more about CTR (and proper SEO in general) here: https://backlinko.com/seo-this-year#chapter2

Now, if you still want to rank for all three of those terms (New York Passes Comparison, New York Pass Reviews, and Best New York Pass) in one blog post, the way to do it is through Latent Semantic Index or LSI keywords. Here's a good guide: http://thecontentwrangler.com/2016/08/15/complete-guide-lis-keywords/#

As a bonus, I think you'll find these guides very helpful (they are famous in the SEO industry): https://backlinko.com/actionable-seo-tips & https://backlinko.com/google-ranking-factors

Let me know how it goes. Eventually, you should start to see a significant boost in traffic after following these tips. :)

Thanks for this, That has given me a lot to think about

You are right my titles are trying to target multiple keywords. It's not something I considered Google would penalise. So right off the bat that's something I can look into.

My Best performing post has a title

Las Vegas GO Card Reviews - Is the Las Vegas GO Card Worth it?

This is steady at Pos 4 and has been for weeks, it gets clicks too.

My logic for the titles is LSI, however it's possible I have misunderstood the concept so will read your links and what I can do to achieve some improvements

I had a suspicion Google was "testing" my site with its up and down ranks, but had know understanding of that. Thanks for the link about CTR.

Thanks for your honest advice

You're welcome.

Titles should target only one keyword. They are not the place for LSI keywords. Those go in your content wherever they work. Definitely read through those articles I referenced - I believe they'll be of tremendous help!

Wishing you success!

That’s weird, are you getting at least some organic traffic?

bad days 1-2 (the days of zero are a thing of the recent past)

Normal days 5-10

Good days 20

That's organic traffic only I get more from referral and social but that always seems poor quality "bouncy" traffic.

Ok, thanks for your feedback. I'm also into the niche travel and travel photography (in French). To compare, for now i've 43 posts and i'm around 40-60 organic search a day.

Thanks for the comparison

Right now i would be very happy with that type of traffic.

Still lots to go on so far so fingers crossed i can make tweeks to get me where i need to be

No problem. I've been working for less than 6 months.

Hello Stephen, I visited your site and find it interesting but somewhat broad in information and competing with information already available online for each city. Just a suggestion but you might select a target audience that would like things off the beaten track and that might interest new visitors to a city. Or what can business travellers do in their down time. It is rough finding that target audience, but once you do, then it is just a matter of time.

Hi, Harvey

My target is geared towards new visitors, at least that's the idea. I am aware a lot of it has been written about before. But with low QSR I should still be able to rank?

Perfecting target audience and such is only going to work if I rank, Any thing I write now wanders off into obscurity.

My first priority is getting a base people can visit to help learn about cities. I then have a life time to write about specific obscure things that interest certain sub niches.

Something is not quite right huh! Hate it when hard work goes un-noticed, let me know what your site is and perhaps I can have a look for you. StevenEsser and I can possibly help you, worth a try huh

Edited the Question to included URL, Cheers.

Had a quick look, header pic is great. This post: https://yourusacityguide.com/what-is-the-weather-like-in-new-york-city-average-temperatures-and-conditions-throughout-the-year

Can you tell me what the keyword is for this - PM me if you like it might be easier. Steve

Hi, Steve

The keyword for that post is:

"What is the Weather Like in New York City"

src - 100 trf - 17 Qsr - 22

According to Keyword tool. it ranks at 49 with a high of 34

300 52 55 are the stats for the keyword:
What is the Weather Like in New York

100 17 22
What is the Weather Like in New York City

There is not a lot of traffic but there should be enough to get things moving.

My initial thoughts are that you do not have enough comments, I have seen a few but a lot more are needed.

I have some ideas for you but as it is 2.15 am here in Sydney Australia I need to go get some sleep.

I will PM you tomorrow (our time) in the afternoon.

I will have had some time to think by then, and I will be honest, as long as that is ok with you!

No problem mate get some sleep lol thanks for the help

As I said I have targeted REALLY low QSR regardless of traffic to get things going, I know the traffic will not be huge per post, but as I am getting poor ranks it's next to zero.

As for comments the exact number is 326 (including replies) spread amongst my posts.

Wow, look at the answers you got, far beyond what I could have said. Glad I stopped by cos now I have some homework to do.

Good luck and would be ever so interested in your comeback and success with the changes.

Hello, I am starting out myself so I can't help you with the technical reasons as to why you are not getting more traffic. But I have ideas that I can share:

1. Contact sellers that would compliment your offering and offer up a mutual affiliate agreement. This will get you more points to your website.

2. Ask WA folks to comment on your site, maybe your missing something simple and need to take step a back.

3. What's different about Mothballed that your site is lacking.

Best Wishes .. Alan

Hi Allen,

I would say My site compared to the mothballed one is superior in every way, my first site was my "practice" site if you like. My writing keyword selection and use has all improved since starting my new site.

The only two differences are competitiveness of the niche

The old site is not SSL and the New one is.

Strange

That's very disheartening. How long are your posts? How many comments do you have on them? Is your niche perhaps hard to rank for? I'm not entirely sure why your site isn't gaining rank or traffic, but there are usually reasons for it.

Perhaps I can have a look at it. Or others.

Steven

Two things to keep in mind when doing keyword research are;

Or others.

Steven

Edited the Question to included URL

My posts tend to be long, 2000-4000. My shorter
