I read a blog about SEO and the author said that linking to an authority site with a no follow link was a good thing to do for SEO.

Why is this so? What is a no follow link and what effect does it have?

Your content needs to be relevant. And to measure relevance it need to related to other more trusted sites. So you providing links to reliable sites means your content is solid and can be verified, that is, if they user goes to say Wikipedia, what your content says is in line with it then the user will be inclined to trust your content.

Getting a link FROM authority sites is a great feat, but if you can achieve it, say an authority niche site does a report. Or article and puts a link to your site it means your content also has authority. But that takes time to establish.

It depends on the context. I link a lot to Wikipedia, this provides reliable information and this is the only reason. In a way you also show your confidence.

As for no-follow, just do not waste time on this, link in the usual way.

Ok, so let's say i link my post to Wikipedia -

Do i put the link on my keyword phrase or else where?

What happens when I link to an authority site? Do I get listed on that site?

And, in what context would you link to an authority site?

This is only for providing reliable information and nothing else, I already said so. You put link where it is most appropriate, nothing to do with the keyword in principle. No you do not get listed on that site.
