Hello business friends,
How is everyone doing? I would like to know if anyone know the size limit of XML Sitemap. I am seeing 50mb for the limit and recommended 10mb for ensuring that the server doesn't lag when serving very large files. If you have large files, do you break them up into categories, then create a sitemap index? I just want to know if you are doing these based on the large size if you have any. Thanks.

I believe various answers are correct, John.
In addition, I've read recently that it's worth splitting sitemaps into sets of 200 because Google is more likely to index all of 200 but only a percentage of say 1000.

I haven't got around to learning how to do that yet though; I don't need to yet!

I think there are various answers friend. But at some point if people are not breaking up their large amount of pages into categories, and then creating a sitemap index, it could be the reason why they are getting error messages with their Sitemap. I was not clear on this, so I was looking for people who a lot of pages and are setting up categories and using sitemap index to have their site run smoothly. Thanks for commenting. All the best!

Hey John,

Asked Google your question... and... VOILA! See screen print below...

I thought it was only 1,000 URLs, so I learned something new tonight. Thank YOU!

You're welcome friend. I know the answer, but I was just trying to get people's experience who have large amount of pages. Are they breaking them up into categories and creating sitemap index? If not, it could be the reason why they may experience error messages with their sitemap. Thanks for commenting. All the best!

Google and Bing have both increased their limits from 10MB to 50MB and up to 50,000 URL's per sitemap. Anything over that amount would need to be split into two or more sitemaps depending on their sizes.

That;s what I've read friend. But some people are recommending that we keep it at 10mb for optimum server speed. I also think that people who hit the 50mb mark could be seeing the error messages in their XML sitemap. Thanks for commenting. All the best!

I agree that lower file size can speed up the servers speed. However, the servers Wealthy Affiliate uses may well be the fastest that exists.

They are known for the fastest page loading speeds above most others. I'm not sure it would affect the speed that drastically with the WA servers.

The new servers added in 2020 are unbelievably fast, one of our fellow members wrote a blog about the servers.

I was working in AIO SEO and found out something that pertains here. AIO SEO default settings are 1000 URLs per sitemap. You can change that number up to 50,000 URLs, but that's the default setting. It automatically sets another sitemap after 1000 URLs are reached per sitemap. I didn't see the file size mentioned, but I would assume at 1000 URLs it's probably not a large file.

I see friend. But in the past, 1000 URLs were the limit. AIO SEO have kept the old 1000 URLs limit as a suggestion only and it's also built in their plugin. I think they want to stick with it and avoid the overall change just for simplicity of their plugin. It makes no sense to allowed the 50,000 URLs limit and not be able to use it. Why not 2000 URLs 3000 URLs, etc...??
This tells me that if you actually do reach the 50,000 URLs limit, there will have to be 50 divided sitemaps with 1000 URLs. I'd like to see the comparison data between the 50,000 URLs and the 50 site maps of 1000 URLs when it comes to website crawling. I doubt that there will be any as it wouldn't be necessary since they bump it up from 1000 URLs to 50,000 URLs which had to be tested before allowing that much. All the best!

You're probably right as to why AIO SEO stands by that 1000 URLs. It would be interesting to see the difference of 50 sitemaps and the 1 sitemap with 50,000 URLs. A bench test would be great.
