Hello, I wonder if someone could enlighten me on how long you keep a 301 redirect in place for.

I changed my site name back at the beginning of March (and moved my existing site to it).

There was a few weeks where the redirect failed I believe but since then it has been working.

So, I still have the redirect in place but wonder whether it should be ceased. I'm faily new at this and don't realy understanding all the technicalities so am unsure. I wonder whether it can be a hindrance in keeping a redirect in place.

Your advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Martine

Ideally at least 30 days, but I have one in place for over 60 days. It’s completely up to you, but if the site was a new site without much traffic when the redirect occurred, then 30 days is more than enough. If it was a popular site with a lot of traffic and a lot of backlinks and social media shares, then you’ll want the redirect in place for a lot longer.

hi. it's suggested to leave it in place for 30 days to maintain rank & traffic. Then you can delete it.

figure out how to do what? If you're talking about how to delete it, go into your Site Manager, go to the listing of the website, click on 'details' button lower right, scroll all the way down and you'll find the 'delete this website' button.

Thanks so much Patty

That’s what I meant...lol, but also the redirect itself.

Then I suppose I would also delete it from GSC and Google Analytics.
