I recently published a blog on my meta description observations:
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/biztom/blog/wp-excerpt-vs-meta-description

I always provide a meta description, but not the excerpt. I was wondering whether we should provide article excerpts for SEO purposes.

If anyone has investigated this matter from the SEO angle, please share your insights with me.

Thank you!

Meta Description, WordPress Excerpt and a Google Description are three different things. Although, the Google Description is supposed to use your Meta Description, if it deems it appropriate.

Writing an Excerpt within WordPress is not displayed within your Meta Tags or HTML code. It is used for Blog Rolls where you have them set to Summary with the Read More button.

Hope that helps,

Thanks, Chrystoph, for your very clear explanation.

So, basically, excerpts have limited value for SEO purposes, right?

If you’re referring to the Excerpts Text Box within WordPress Posts, then yes.

Although, you can configure SEO Plugins to populate the SEO Description fields using these Excerpts, if you are using Excerpts throughout your website, as it saves double data entry, as you don’t have to then also write an SEO Description. If you don’t change any SEO Plugin settings from their defaults, they usually take the SEO Description from your first paragraph.
