Currently, I am going through WA training. One of the lesson taught to create some informational post with no affiliate links. This helps the website to get good rankings in the search engine.

My question is whether I can include external links in my post for reference purposes? I don't know if Google differentiates between external and affiliate link or treats them equally.

Something that came up in Jay's training video yesterday/today might answer your question.

He mentioned that Google can infect tell if an external link is an affiliate link or not and that you should intact always have an external link to an authority website.

It was one of the biggest points he was trying to drive in his live training.

Hey Mark, Can you share the link to this training?

Well worth watching both of these.

Google doesn't treat affiliate links any different to any other external links - after all the search engines have no real way of telling whether they are affiliate links or not. Sure they have a querystring with your ID - but for all the search engine knows this could merely be a click tracking ID, location data string or similar.

However if you have external links in EVERY post, the search engine may assume for example that you are just selling paid links (a big no-no), and so it likes to see a bit of a happy medium, which is why Kyle mentions about posting a piece of content with no outbound links at all (affiliate or not).

Thanks Dale. So I assume that the search engine treats both the links equally. And I should try to link internal pages to the informational post.

One more question, whether linking authority sites also have a bad impact like Wikipedia or keyword planner?

Yep they're treat equally.

Ultimately the general rule of thumb is that if there is relevant content you can link to that will make the post better for the user, link it - but don't just link for the sake of it.

Good question, thank you. Something I need to know too.

Always have at least one external link that is not an affiliate link with every post.

A great tip is to pick a relevant word near the start of your post and link it to a Wikipedia page about that word.

Google loves external links to authority sites.

An external link is entirely different from an affiliate one.
Google doesn't actually like 'Raw' affiliate links.
Always best to cloak them with a link shortner.
Have you not tried Pretty links?

Thanks Robert. Linking to authority sites seems like a good idea. You said to cloak the links, but I've heard that Google doesn't like cloaking or hiding the links. Though I don't know whether it's true or not but I've read it in many posts.

A query? I just looked at the post and its very informative. If I find such posts can I use the link in my posts to help people be more informed? Would I need to ask permission first?
Hope you don't mind me asking.

Hard to answer that definitively Linda.
Most of the time you can refer to another web page without stepping on anyone's toes but to be sure you can always contact the owner and ask if its ok to use their site for reference.

That particular web page does have a Contact Form.
Hope I've given you some clear direction.

In general I don't bother asking for permission. If the webmaster of the website wants to email me to take the link down I will. But why would they do that if you are giving them an organic backlink?

If your site is spammy it could be a problem but if not they will probably benefit as much as you will.
