Just curious and I know someone here will know. If we put the Amazon links or widgets into our posts does it hurt when Google is ranking or crawling.

I'm still working on my niche website. I got caught up building a site for a friend.

I can tell you that I have been maintaining several web pages on a site called Hubpages for years. They keep changing their algorithms to keep Google happy.

One thing I've picked up is that they seem to discourage more than one or two Amazon links on each article. (My evergreen articles run between 1,000 - 2,000 words).

I've sold quite a bit with my Amazon links on their site. So for my own site, I am going to keep the affiliate links to no more than one or two per page. I think it's a good rule of thumb.

Google and the audience gets twitchy with too many affiliate links. Less is more in this instance.

It is recommended in lessons not to overdo this. If this is a bad users' experience (from Google's point of view) then it may affect ranking.

But ads bring income.

excellent question, and I think it actually might be beneficial, wouldn't it?

Hey Orion,

If overused, you BET it would hurt your site's ranking, and it wouldn't be long until Amazon would shut the account down. The idea is not to plaster ads on any website.

What if I have a page set up as a "shop" with a whole bunch of products sorted in categories and they all ultimately link to Amazon, would that be considered overuse? or would Google view it as a "shop" page? Is that considered "advertising"?

An online shop is not a post and is treated differently for obvious reasons.

No, not at all. I wouldn't put them in the header section of your site but within your posts and pages content or the sidebar widget won't affect ranking or crawling. ~Jude
