I am doing a lot of changes to my website pages at present and just wondered if these updates will count as activity with Google and increase my ranking?

It will effect you rank either positively or negatively. If you remove text that Google is ranking you highly on that is not your targeted keyword, your rankings will go down. Remember, Google does not just rank you on your targeted keyword, but on all of your content. This is why I rarely remove content and instead only add content when I update.

Google will definitely re-index your pages if they have changed. If the algorithm likes the changes the rank may go up. If the algorithm doesn't like the changes the rank may go down. Some of the algorithms only hit your page one a month, or twice a year. Google can be very slow with a trillion or so pages to look at. So it may be a long time before you actually see the changes take effect.

Thanks for the explanation - we'll see how it goes. Most of my pages have been re-written with a bit more detail and photo's added, use of more headings and links.
