I have a topic that I wrote a post about maybe 9-12 months ago. I have another post on the same basic info but not a duplicate content just similar.
Will there be any SEO ramifications with Google or am I cool?

You are cool insofar you keep in mind what you asked and was answered here on keywords!!
If you say it is not duplicate but similar.... veer away by couching it in different terms and you should be OK on the basis it is the same topic only offering a different slant with new insights.
You also have the option of including it in the previous article and improving and adding to that which would have been my preferred option.
