Measure your social impact - with Klout

Ever heard of Klout? Klout – www.klout.com – is a useful tool that allows bloggers and social networkers to gauge their social impact. It does this by giving us all a score of between 1 and 100 (1 being exceptionally poor, 100 being fantastic), by ascertaining the engagement of our various posts, tweets, Facebook Likes, pins, retweets, reposts, etc. etc.

Time to lose that personality!

At first glance, Klout could look like a way to boost one's ego and self esteem and claim bragging rights over one's social media peers! I'll be honest, when I initially started on Klout, I was that person! But when I took a closer look I for one found that it can also be a great way understand the impact of your online gravitas.

Climb the social ladder

Like many others, when I first started on Klout, I for one was somewhat fixated on getting my score of then 11 to something much more respectable. Over the weeks that followed, I managed to get my social score up to the dizzy heights of 51 - that was more than halfway to perfection of 100! To help give my Klout score the best chance of going even higher I connected pretty much every web-based social network that I used routinely to my Klout dashboard. This included, among others, my Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, Swarm and Flickr profiles. Unfortunately, this approach didn't exactly work out as I'd hoped as Klout's methods for scoring actually depend on social impact and engagement, and less so on quantity. Yet 51, I felt, was a respectable score and unquestionably got me up into the higher echelons of the Klout community! Now, I ought to highlight that relatively few people get a score of much over 60 or 70. So my score of 51 wasn't that bad at all.

Take your 'social impact' seriously

On a more serious note, believe it or not there are several large businesses out there actually looking to employ the services of those with a high social media influence. Why? To promote their products of course and have you spread the good word across the internet. And Klout is one of the first places they go to to understand who in their sector is shouting the loudest and getting heard and engaged with.

An example of this was when Dell, the US computer manufacturer, approached one of Klout’s higher scoring influencers within the tech social sphere, with a view to giving them one of their laptops absolutely free of charge, to test and review. There was of course a catch to their incredible generosity as their real goal was to have the user then share their thoughts about the product across their social networks and get some viable interest generated. If you think about it, it's actually not a bad and really cheap way to promote a product.

There are, of course, potential negative implications of this approach for the manufacturer, but when managed properly it can also be a fantastic way to generate some good ‘viral marketing’. Furthermore, it's one that is genuinely being used by many large companies out there - Dell, being one case in point.

Enter the affiliate marketer

In my view, and it is only my view, I believe that there is a place for these 'real-life reviews by us affiliate marketers. So while I may have earlier mocked those obsessed with getting higher Klout scores to obtain bragging rights over their peers, there is certainly some value in us affiliateers with niche websites to give our Klout scores some good consideration. And if you are regularly tweeting, posting, pinning or whatever else you do on social media, your score will be pretty good by default anyway.

Think of it... if you can get a company have you physically review one of the products and post it on your highly authoritative niche website, then the affiliate referral potential for you is huge.

Give it a go... What have you got to lose?

At the time of writing, my social Klout score is 56 - which I think is is pretty cool. And this was achieved by simply just posting regularly on social media as I do for all of my niche site, every single day - some of it, admittedly, automated.

So give Klout a go... you may find ultimately find that it is that goose that lays that golden egg for your affiliate career!

Never heard of Klout, so I appreciate the info, Sean. I was just taking a quick break from writing, but I'll definitely take a look.

No worries Veronica. Glad to be of service :-)

Hello I have just registered and how do I add my own content please

paul

OK found it but am I supposed to add other people items and where do I add them to

so far the screen just keeps freezing and nothing happens nowstuck

Hi Paul. You don't add content as such - Klout does pull in other posts that may be of interest to you, for you to share if you wish. Klout monitors that for you. But primarily it is a measurement tool. Just log in and go to your profile settings and connect your Social Networks, You can also share other posts of interest to these networks by using the 'Schedule' or 'Explore' facility.

Oh dear. Not sure why that would be. It seems to work fine for me.

so it just measure what you sent to social networks right

Yes... it measures what you post in social networks, but more importantly, measures it's engagement reach, etc, and thus reaches an influence score based on all of that. And, it also shares with you other people's posts that may be of interest that you can then share yourself.

yes I see and I am trying now OK

Good good :-)

will see what happens and thanks

No problem :-)

Just connected mine. Thanks so much for sharing this tool.

No worries. Hope you find it useful.

Impressive tool. There are even cartoons about Klout scores!
