I live in Australia so is it best to go with a - .com.au or .net? because I have both available for the domain name I have chosen.

Just be mindful that in to have a .com.au you need to register it as a business name which incurs addition fees.

How did you go Steve, Did you find a niche and a name to go with it?

Thanks Guy's you have both been a great help. Time to buy my suite :)

No worries Steve. @RICH is the wisest man on WA!

I'm a minefield of useless information. :P R.

Yes good point @RICH... as always!!! Ha, I was going to say Steve, just because you are in Australia your niche/website may want to sell worldwide in which case .com is a good idea too, if its available of course!

I had just noticed .org is available too. Does it mean I should nab that one as well?

You can if you want because they often come cheaper in a 'package'. BUT... .org is generally reserved for things like charity, schools etc as in 'organisations' so its not as important as .com.au and .net

If I'm "branding", I tend to buy the suite, .com .org .net .info and any appropriate regionals, ie. .co.uk :) Rich.

Hi Saundo, I'm aussie too, I personally would get both but the .com.au would be my first choice!

Cheers TJ ;) for the quick response. What is the benefit of owning both?

Just so that nobody else can grab it and copy/imitate your site. Its usually not that much money to have both domains. I would build my site on the .com.au and just redirect the .net to the .com.au site so they both appear the same (hope that makes sense)

Please let me know if i'm at least on the right track for deciding on a domain. Cheers Steve

Yes. There are many strategies on this. I just tend to see what is available and what sounds enticing to the reader.

Domain name based on low hanging fruits? Here is the standard answer Rich gives and I agree with him.

You should try first for a .com then a .org then a .net. I wouldn't worry about keyword rich domains or EMDs (Exact Match Domains). It's content that ranks, not domain names. I'd rather have a brand such as http://www.boohoo.com thanhttp://www.buycheapdesignerwomensclothesonline.com Your domain name doesn't even have to be relevant, if it did http://www.amazon.com would sell river trips andhttp://www.apple.com would sell fruit! It can even be personal, http://www.craigslist.org I'd recommend having a read of this https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/website-development-programming/how-to-choose-a-proper-domain-name :) Rich.

As you can tell i'm very new : ) Thanks for your help guy's, with a answer looped like this I guess it's just simple 101 ;) I was way off the path! Thanks for giving me direction back to the yellow brick road. Steve

LOL, nah, it has nothing to do with you, just them taking the **** out of me. :) R.
