What is a Good Website Design?

It has been a while since I have contributed to the community. I have many excuses - but that is all they are. As one man said whom I will quote - (I don't know who - just not me) "An excuse is a lie wrapped in the skin of truth."

I have seen this question in one form or another for the last year, so here is my attempt to answer it. No new revelations, just reminders of all the great training that can be found here. I'll start with the following - then add some additional comments.

Tips for a Good Website Design

  • A good website design is engaging such that it will instantly grab the user’s attention. It should have a call for action statement. Realize that the average user will only take about 10 seconds to decide if they want to stay on the website or navigate away.
  • A good website design will be clean, well-organized and easy to navigate. It is important to note that if a user finds it easy to navigate, then so will the search engines. Your website should be well structured.
  • Your visitors want a quick solution. Ensure that your contact information is easily available.
  • A good website design should work within all browsers. Perform a browser compatibility check to see what it looks like.
  • Your website should function well on all mobile devices. Again - check it yourself - periodically. (I check mine at least once a month)
  • Your website should load fast. Remember that your visitors are impatient. If your website does not load within a few seconds you will find your visitors will navigate away from it.
  • Your website should always have new fresh content. Google announced that it was modifying its algorithm to take content age into account more frequently.

We need to remember this quote:

“The most effective way to make a design useable is to make it interesting enough that people want to use it.” ~ Bryan Grezeszak

Don't fall under the impression of many website owners that once you have set up your website that just having the website will instantly bring you visitors. Your website is a signpost. Unfortunately, most website owners do not treat their website as a sign post!

The more you are involved with your website, the more your website will work for you.

You do not need a background in web design background and you don't need to be an SEO expert to write useful content for your website. It just takes you constantly updating your website.

If you would like to target your visitors, then optimization is important.

Writing fresh useful content is the foundation needed for website optimization. Adding fresh content in the form of a blog or a news section to your website will always help with website optimization. You need to keep adding useful articles to encourage visitors to return to your site.

Good Website design means you need to have Clarity and Ease of Use

When that targeted visitor comes to your website for the first time, it should be immediately clear to them what your website is about and what you offer - whether it is services, product, or information. Most users just skim through the content. Make your content easy to understand and ensure that your graphics portray your message.

You need to pay close attention to your navigation. Any user should be able to easily navigate to each page of your website.

Good Website design means you write for your visitors not for the Search Engines

Many website owners and content writers forget that the user comes first. Your targeted visitor want text that is easy to read and well structured. Your page should have a clear introduction and what you are providing. If you are using a slider, then it is important you your taglines or slogans are meaningful. If they are, then that will trigger users to dig deeper into your website.

When your website is content focused, it will reduce your bounce rate.

Don’t forget to have plenty of call to action elements. The call-to-action on a page triggers the user to click and go to the next page.

Lastly, do not stuff your content with keywords. Follow the training provided here and you should do well.

Yes I truly believe in what you are saying I know because I learned the hard way another mistake I made was rushing my content where it looked sloppy and not professional now that I have followed people (like yourself) and applied what I have learned I am starting to see results but still along way to go all the best Max
