7 Principles to Unlock Your Potential for Online Business Leadership

I live in Loveland, Colorado near the base of the Big Thompson Canyon. I love early mornings in Colorado especially when I can catch the sunrise as it warms up the hues of green and blue in the tree-covered foothills. When I can, I love to venture up to Estes Park for an early morning hike in the majestic Rocky Mountain National Park.

The morning sun was beginning to rise on the gold and purple granite walls of the Big Thompson Canyon as I wound my way up to Estes Park for one of my hiking adventures with my dog, Mollie. I stopped part-way at a coffee shop just as a local artisan was beginning to carve an old weathered pine log. "What are you making?" I asked. "Can't say until I get a look at how the grain runs", he replied. A few hours later I stopped by the coffee shop. I just had to see what he had carved in that old discarded log.

He was just finishing a final coat of lacquer in his wood sculpture. What was once just an ordinary six foot pine log was now an amazing woodland scene with intricate musical instruments, timber animals and trees. The combination of stains he had selected brought out the exquisite detail in the pine. Who knew that old piece of pine once discarded could be transformed into something now highly valued?

The artist found potential in what most would have split for firewood and he turned it into a beautiful piece of art. There are billions of people whose lives are much like that old log. Trapped within them is a symphony that the world will never hear until they discover that the grain running inside them is destined for something spectacular.

You are filled with unlimited possibilities. Your ability to recognize and unlock your potential will determine the kind of online business you build as well as the life you enjoy. You could choose to purchase one of the many "get-rich-quick" ready made for you internet marketing sites--in other words, be a copy of other online businesses or you could choose to follow your passion and much like the artisan who sculpted that old pine log, you could become a market leader and sculpt your online business into something that provides tremendous value to your niche market.

There is no right or wrong. It's simply a matter of choice.

Hopefully, the seven tips listed below will give you something to think about as you evaluate the tremendous opportunity and potential you have for online business success.

-1- Potential is dormant ability just waiting to burst forth. What you have accomplished is no longer your potential; your potential lies in what you are yet to achieve.

-2- Mediocrity is the enemy of untapped potential. So too is success. Refuse to be satisfied with your last great accomplishment. No leader can rest on his or her laurels.

-3- Everything begins as a seed of potential. Nothing is instant. Seeds take time to plant, cultivate and harvest. Your online internet business takes time to cash-flow. Top earners tweak and adjust their messages and products until they hit their monetary goals.

-4- Don't settle for what you have. Those who have changed the world took the word impossible out of their vocabulary. Refuse to settle for past success. Therein is the tragedy of an unfulfilled life. Thomas Edison innovated the incandescent light bulb but he didn't stop there. He went on to produce 1,093 patents.

-5- Don't wait to be challenged. Challenge yourself to stretch and reach higher than you've ever gone before. Jim Collins wrote, "Good is the enemy of great." Instead of doing a few things that are good and a lot of things that are average, do one thing exceptionally well and be relentless in polishing it to perfection.

-6- Don't be afraid to rock the boat. Courage and conviction are remarkable leadership qualities. Failure is not the absence of success; failure is the neglect of trying. Theodore Roosevelt said, "Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in that gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

-7- If you think it, you can do it. But, you can only grasp what you can see. Dare to dream big today and imagine yourself accomplishing something extraordinary. "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do." Mark Twain

Thank you Rebecca I agree with all you are truly a great writer.

I think for me it is staying the course when the work gets boring. LOL I get bored fast.

I used to make wood signs and after the initial work was finished, which was the design the cutting and taking it to the sand blaster. the the boring part came with the tedious painting UGG. boring. I was always glad when I finished because one I received payment and two I was felt satisfied and complete.

Theres my wisdom. I guess what I am saying is to keep going and you will feel satisfied and you will get paid. LOL

Thanks again and God bless you Rebecca
Kymee

Oh my dear Kymee, thanks for the compliment but I'm just doing my best to bring some inspiration. Regardless of how the words come together, we need to draw upon the strength of others to complete our tasks for the day. You too are a great writer. I think your website is excellent. Your passion shines through it.

Creative people often find themselves bored and searching for a new challenge...another creative outlet. That's the God in you who created you to express the awesome and wonderful gifts inside you to the fullest expression of your potential.

I honestly think the things we seek are already inside us just waiting for our permission to give them expression. You are an inspiration to me and so many others in this WA community.

And yes, it is gratifying to get paid...especially when you receive payment for doings something you love to do:):).

Make this an awesome day, Awesome Lady!

Can I just say for a moment you allowed me to be transported to the beautiful mountains of CO and the hot, humid weather of FL seemed to disappear. :)

You have definitely been blessed with an ability to arouse the senses of your readers. :)

Number 3 resonated with me so much, especially with what I've been going through with my websites. When you are at this thing we call Internet Marketing for months and seeing very little results you can become discouraged. That is when I draw on my faith and know that my heavenly father has me on this path for a reason. I have to force myself to look at the end results and keep my eye on that while everything else is screaming at me to quit!

It's a darn good thing quit is NOT in this girls vocabulary.

Thank you so much for sharing and encouraging so many of us to keep on...keeping on.

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment, Audrey. I know exactly what you are saying regarding the challenge with new websites. Anyone who promotes overnight success just by putting up a website is untruthful in my book; but you cannot become a successful online Netpreneuer without having a website.

I am so encouraged to hear you say, "quit is NOT in this girl's vocabulary." You have two beautiful, well-niched websites with huge potential. It does take time to establish your place of dominance within a niche.

I know you pray and I do too. There have been many times when I feel like backing away from what I believe is my true purpose/calling. I don't always receive an immediate answer when I pray but some piece of wisdom or an empowering connection or an insight always comes to me when I pray and I am able to make adjustments and move on toward the fulfillment of the vision inside me.

My prayer for you..."And God is able to make all grace to abound to you...every favor and earthly blessing come to you in abundance..."

I have an idea for you that I will share in a PM.

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for those words of wisdom! That picture is breathtaking.
Take Care , Chris

Thanks for your comment. Colorado is one of the places that seems to spark my imagination. I do love watching the wood carvers and other artists. But even more, I love seeing people like you follow their passion to make their life spectacular. Enjoy this day and use your potential to achieve the thing you imagine.

What a wonderful article Rebecca. I will be thinking of your seven tips as I walk the hills here in Cork, Ireland. Con

Thanks for reading and taking time to comment. Ireland is on my bucket list. I get a lot of inspiration from being outside and seeing natural beauty. Enjoy your walk and come back inspired to use you gifts to help others. I truly believe we were all created to do something awesome with our life.

This was great...really, really awesome writing! Do you write...? short stories...poems... ?
To kind of add to the mark twain quote...you know when people say "i can't learn how to (place example here)...do you know how old i'll be by the time i can do it!?!" and the answer is "yup, the same age you'll be if you don't." People have got to stop procrastinating (I know...i'm one to speak..as one of the biggest known procrastinators alive :) ) and just do things instead of asking all the "what ifs" and fearing failure.
Ok, now that i pumped myself up, I actually gotta hit the sack cuz the past six days I haven't gone to sleep earlier than 4:30 a.m.
Thanks for that!
And is there any way I can bookmark this for myself if I ever wanna go back and read it?
(I've spent a weekend in denver the summer after 8th grade..gorgeous! went to pike's peak, olympic center...wish i could go now though, cuz really, i didn't care all that much then bout nature stuff...would appreciate it so much more now. And loveland is a really pretty name!
anyways, good luck and g'night!

Thanks for your comment. You are so right about procrastination....I heard Tony Robbins say that "procrastination is the assignation of motivation." Truthfully, when you don't value your time you don't value yourself.

You were created to do something awesome with your life. I wish that had sunk into me when I was much younger. The best way to overcome fear of failure is adopt the Nike motto and "Just Do It". Make today a great one!

I felt motivated after reading your post, and I was going to say, "When you write, the sun comes out!" But then I remembered you writing about the sun rising over Big Thompson Canyon, and that's when I suddenly realized my heartfelt words of praise (at least those particular words of praise) might fit more appropriately in your next uplifting blog post. So, for now, you'll have to settle for WOW, what a great piece of inspirational writing! Hope you don't mind, but I've already printed out this blog and will post it in a very conspicuous place so I can draw encouragement from it on a regular basis. :-)

That is quite a compliment coming from an accomplished writer like you. Thank you.

I am thankful that Carson and Kyle have provided the opportunities to write so all of us in this community can practice our craft. I am happy that you found some inspiration. Building a successful online business is challenging and we all need to keep ourselves inspired to be the best we can be to serve the customers that depend upon us.

Great post:
This dose not have any thing to do with WA.
We live in HOT STEAMY south Florida. My wife and I love Colorado.
Can we switch house's in the winter time?
We love the cold and "SNOW".
Oh that's a bad 4 letter word here in Fl. LOL.
Any way you wrote a good blog post
Thank you.

Bill & Lynne

Thank you, J.P. I do like Florida in the winter except for the mosquitos the size of humming birds.(LOL).

I hope you are enjoying and making the most your opportunity here at WA. You have a bright future ahead.

Hi, Rebecca---You certainly have a (beautiful!) way with words. You make them stand up and sing! Lovely post---

Thanks Uakoko. If my words were as bright as your smile I would light up all the dark and dreary places in the world.

Keep following your passion and take a moment to appreciate yourself and the gifts you bring to this community. You are indeed special!:):):)

Once more your talent amazes! Who are you anyway?

I'm not sure how to answer your questions except to say I am someone who wants more than anything to help you and other WA members succeed beyond your wildest dreams. You can do anything that you can imagine yourself doing.

People like the wood carver I wrote about see possibilities in whatever they are working with. I hope you see the tremendous potential in yourself to do whatever you want to do; and if you ever feel like quitting ,(I know I sometimes do) I hope you will remember this post and keep on working at your online business until you find the success you hope for.

Great post! How very true all of these tips are in any kind of goal or dream you'd like to achieve. So many people are afraid to even try something that is out of their normal every day routine.
Fear of failure keeps so many people stuck in jobs that they are not happy with and income that is forever limited to what their employer is able to pay them. I figure a person doesn't know until they at least try and failure is just a way to learn how not to do something. Keep on trying since you never know when success will be just around the corner.

Excellent point. Thanks for your comment. You are so right...fear of failure keeps so many stuck as does fear of change.
