Not Enough Time? - Do Only These 2 Tasks

I have a full-time job that often ends up with overtime work. Normal weeks are 37 ½ hours but can end up with up to 60 hours easily.

I started with a blog and affiliate marketing in 2020, believing it would be a simple side hustle to get an affiliate marketing blog up and running. At first, it seemed easy and simple.

Then it got too much, I got caught up in the technicalities of having a website, started to worry about other marketing skills and started to forget the basics of creating a blog, posting regularly and maintaining it.

In addition, I had and still have several obligations in sports that take up time.

If you think you do not have enough time to blog and at the same time write 2 -3 blog posts every week? Think again, because you do. Keep reading and see why.

My Day and Week – How Do I Keep Progress and Create Space For Learning?

I have Nathaniell Brenes as my WA mentor. He is great and has this fantastic simple approach to what we learn here at WA. The most important lesson he has given, at least in my eyes, is well documented in his post on his WA blog roll called; “How To Blog and Keep Your Job”. It is a highly recommended reading. His post made me sit down to look closer at where my time-wasters were hidden.

How Much Time Do You Have Available Each Day For Blogging?

My day is usually like this;

Up at 5 AM in the morning, cold shower, clean my teeth, and take the dog for a walk, getting some easy exercise going at the same time and fresh air.

Between 05:45 and 6 o´clock I am ready for a nice cup of coffee, 10 minutes of meditation, 5 minutes of visualizations and about 20 minutes for reading.

At 06.30 I have 60 minutes that I can dedicate to writing or researching blog topics and keywords before my daytime job starts at 07:30.

I am back home from work at 16:00 on a normal day. The time between 16:00 and 17:30 are blocked off to family, dinner, walking the dog and some me-time (music, reading, mindfulness).

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 18:00 – 20:00 are blocked for physical training. After that, I take time for another 60 minutes to blog and research topics/keywords.

This allows me to write effectively for my blog for about 2 hours every day. That is plenty of time to create 2 blogposts pr week.

On weekends, I make sure to have time off in the weekends. The focus is on friends, family and taking care of myself. But since I am a morning person (I usually get up at 5 AM at the weekends too) allows me actually to have about 3 hours on Saturday and Sunday mornings to work on my blog and business.

In total, even if I have a busy schedule, It is possible for me to write an article every other day, or every third day, and squeeze out 3 articles for my blog. That equals 3x52=156 blog posts within one year….

If you make sure to write quality content, which means content that real people actually are searching for through Google, Bing or Yahoo, or for that matter Pinterest or YouTube, this can start to pay off rather quickly.

You Need Only To Focus on Two Things!

Why am I writing this? Because there is no difficult recipe to make this work. Nathaniell´s advice is the following: you basically only need to things to become successful with blogging;

  1. Keyword Research
  2. Writing Articles

If you focus on these simple tasks consistently, you will do well. Nathaniell writes in his blog post:

  • Monday: Topic research, article outline, 500 words introduction & conclusion
  • Tuesday: 1000 words, edit, upload images, format text, & publish
  • Wednesday: Repeat Monday
  • Thursday: Repeat Tuesday
  • Friday: Tie up loose ends, catch up on work, Wealthy Affiliate training
  • Saturday: Analyze traffic, keyword research, Wealthy Affiliate training
  • Sunday: Keyword Research & Wealthy Affiliate Training

This gives you two articles per week for two years. That's 208 articles at the end of those years, plus it allows for time to complete your WA training, analyze your traffic, and take "high level" actions like fixing your site navigation, putting out fires, and doing additional research.

I am on this schedule this year, as well as having a plan of scaling my blog after 6 months. But that is a story for another blog post.

What About Social Media?

All in good time. My friendly advice learned the hard way during the last 23 months; forget them! Your focus should only be on creating content for your website at first.

If you decide to do some social media, select one, a maximum of two, and be very disciplined in keeping the time you have blocked off for them

After 6 months, you can start utilizing social media, the one or two platforms you have selected, and get very skilled on how to use them.

Some Final Thoughts

The solution to getting things done is to break down your tasks into core elements; what are the real needle movers. For blogging and getting noticed, keep it simple;

  • Do keyword research, find out what real people search for in Google
  • Write articles.

And please, forget social media for the first 3 to 6 months. It is so easy to get distracted from your primary tasks of researching and blogging.

2022 Will Be Great! You are unique and got have greatness within!

Thanks, Roy, you would think that after three years, I should already know this. I have a habit of letting other stuff get in my schedule... if I have one. I am really bad about not planning. So, I believe I need to go to the next level of my business and start actually planning my days as you did.

I never saw that article from Nathaniell. It might be a good idea that I go check it out also.

I wish you the best!

Bob

Today is a new day to be extraordinary (Brendon Burchard). Nathaniell´s blog post is good. Another hint is Jay´s 14-day case study class, day 8 and 9. He has golden nuggets to get going with a plan and keep to it: Roy

Thanks, Roy, I will definitely take a look at these... this weekend. :-)

Thanks for this Roy.

I too have a very demanding job and really struggle with creating blog posts. I also suffer with extreme tiredness and without a kip/nap every now and again I cannot focus at all. A powernap does me wonders but I sometime go beyond that.

I guess I need to factor in my additional sleep with your guidance above along with the dog walking, family time, me time as well.
I know I have to start somewhere and and small steps are a good start.

Again thank you for this and I will try and put together a plan to get me moving.

Thanks

Glynn

If I told you that I have actually managed to put in a power nap into this as well 😄. 10 to 20 minutes in the time slot 16-18.

Getting up at 5 am requires me to be disciplined and get to bed at 10 to 10:30.

I got the motivation to get onto my schedule again after listening to Mel Robbins TED talk about her 5 seconds rule. It is 20 minutes long and can help you to set your plan in motion :-)

Roy

Thank you. Will check it out.

This is very good advice!

Happy that you enjoyed the advice, Siobhan.

Roy

Great Advice !, i need this motivation as I am working fulltime for 8 hrs mon- thru friday and have time to write more articles :)

I can relate to your situation, Cherlita. Keep pushing towards your ultimate big bold goal!

Roy

Hot stuff Roy to simplify what will get us ahead! Thank you so very Much!!
Suzay

My pleasure, Suzay. It is like doing martial arts or doing the quarterly training programs in the Airforce.
You have to be as good as you can, and then some on all the basics skills, before you can try on more exotic stuff.
The exotic stuff is not necessary as the basics of what you do will always work for you.
