Dont Hit The Delete Button! - Updating Email Addresses

I have messed up!

Since I clicked the delete button on Friday, I have been working on fixing my error.

How familiar are you with the delete button on your computer keyboard?

It is a great button sometimes.

Do you know the psychological effect of something connected with "don´t do it", "don´t push it", "don´t ......", usually written with big white letters on a bright red background or the other way around

The effect is magnetic! We are drawn toward the red button and want to push it to see what will happen...even if we know the result already.

Nevertheless, I think the delete button on the computer keyboard should be coloured red. Preferably with a red-flagged "remove before flight" control lock pin, and preferably with a switch cover over it like it is in the cockpit of a plane.

I hope I have picked your curiosity ????;

Moving to A New Domain With New Email Address

I moved one of my websites to a new domain some time ago and have been updating different services and platforms I use with a new account email address.

As my old domain didn´t expire until the middle of June, I had enough time to update all my connections using the old email domain extension.

That is, I had enough time until Friday morning. I hit the "delete" option for my website and the domain in a moment of "absence of mind". And whoops, there all my emails related to the domain where history.

The feeling you get when you realise, after one split second, what you have done is amazing, and I don´t mean that in a positive context.

However, all is not lost, as I have frequently backed up all the messages going in and out of my account until now. So my previous emails have been safely archived.

Now, the challenge is all the extra work I have generated for myself, covering two years of using the specific email domain.

Spreadsheet - Line By Line Update

"Everything happens for a reason".. I am sure you are familiar with the saying. In my case, it was a good thing to get the switch to the new domain completed and to clean up all the lists I subscribe to. And do not forget that this is an excellent opportunity to check out user support on several platforms and services. It is a perfect topic for a new blog post on my new website.

What did I do? I created a new spreadsheet, filled in the data of all the services and platforms I subscribe to and go line by line to update every platform with the new email address or delete my account.

It is not a fun task in itself, but rewarding in every aspect when done.

What Is the lesson learned?

What is the lesson learned? There are a few things gained in terms of learning from this.

  • Hurry slowly. Don´t rush your tasks and be in the moment of what you do.
  • Use an independent mail program like thunderbird or another product.
  • Frequently make a backup of your emails.
  • Know the platforms and related customer service features.
  • Handle the errors, failures and setbacks with gratitude.

The last one can be difficult to apply for many of us. But setbacks are good. It forces you to take some deep breaths and reflect on what has happened and the way to proceed.

Achievements you seek on your online business journey can be disguised as an error or failures. A setback can force you to take another road or adjust something you do, and suddenly, you reach your goal or milestone.

I wish you a great new week with good productivity!

Great advice, Roy...glad you've resolved it now. The delete but most definitely should be red with a case over it.

Have a great week,
Susan

Thanks, Susan 😊

Greag advice Roy.. I always find it best to try and not rush things too much.

But human nature sometimes gets the best of us and we do end up rushing.. what happens? Mistakes are made and it can cost us a lot of time and effort to rectify them!

But.. every experience is a learning curve and we will make sure not to make the same mistakes again in the future!

Have a great day and start to the week my friend!

It is always a good habit to have a checklist to verify each step😊

Roy

I totally agree with you there Roy... although I have to admit I am guilty as charged on not doing so as often as I should!

You and me both 😄

Excellent advice, Roy! I've accidentally hit a delete button too, andso I know the feeling, my friend!

Have an excellent new week!

Jeff

I remember one time attending a meeting in France. A meeting that lasted a bit into the evening. We were waiting in the vestibule of the company where the meeting was hosted.

One of our team members found the big red fire alarm button on the wall interesting.....need I say that he pushed it 🙄

The secretary staying late to escort us out of the meeting was not impressed, to put it mildly, neither was the rest of our team.

Enjoy your Sunday and the week to come.

Roy

Haha, Roy! I can certainly imagine, my friend!

Thanks for sharing that--it just made my day!

Jeff🤣

😂

😎👍

Good advice. Personally I forward all domain specific emails to my google email as well so I always havea backup.

Alex

It seems that you have a good practice, Alex.

I don´t trust Google or any online backup with taking care of my email accounts. With outlook as an example, I do the backup and then copy the saved archive file (pst) to 2 different hard disks in addition to cloud storage.

Roy

I used to do that (although only one hard drive) for outlook emails at work

You may be right gmail might not be enough once i get going on an email list.

Alex

Gmail is ok, but I am thinking about the possibility if they close your account for some reason.

Maybe I am just paranoid 🤓.

Roy

Anything is possible as in theory I do not control those emails - Gmail does. But I have not heard of them disabling an account.
