I thought I would write a blog post about how I earn money online and offline after reading Diane's post and LD's post. In other words, I hope this blog post will encourage other members to take action. You can see their respective posts below. I will try not to make this blog post too long.

Maybe I am fortunate, but in general, I have always enjoyed working. Admittedly, some days are tougher than others, but we have to take the rough with the smooth. Did you know that it's good to work and earn money, it's a biblical principle that I know really works? When we work it also enables us to help others!

First Job

I started work when I was 13, my first job was delivering newspapers, I believe that this was many people's first job! When I was 14 I started doing small garden jobs after school and on Saturdays. Leaving school at 16, with virtually no qualifications I didn't find a job straight away, so I carried on with small garden jobs.

I had always wanted to work in agriculture and didn't plan on being self-employed. I had my first job on the farm at 16 but continued to do small garden jobs in my spare time. I quickly realised that I wasn't going to earn much money working on the farm as much as I enjoyed the work! By the age of 18, I became self-employed and have been ever since!

Over the years I built up a couple of landscaping businesses that have now been sold. I also continued to do freelance agricultural work, something that I have always been interested in, to this very day.

At 19, I was renting a pig farm with 800 fattening pigs, that was hard work as it was seven days a week! I stuck it for about 2 1/2 years without a single day off! Thankfully I moved on to easier things!

First PC

In 2001 I had my first PC, I had never touched a mouse or had anything to do with computers, it did not interest me whatsoever! A family friend said I need to start using one, reluctantly, I did and he kindly set me up with my first Dell desktop PC. It had just 20 GB of memory, how things change.

Do you remember how frustrating Windows XP was? I would often have to reboot my computer two or three times within a day! I'm thankful that Windows 7 and Windows 10 are a huge improvement on Windows XP!

I must admit I found computers very infuriating, I didn't even know where the letters were on the keyboard to start with! In 2001 we had no broadband, it was just the old-fashioned dial-up, which was exceptionally painful and almost totally useless.

In 2004, I had my first broadband connection, to me, this changed the face of the Internet, the Internet became usable! All of a sudden, I could see the power of the Internet, I had to find a way of utilising the power of the Internet.

First Moneymaking Website

Unfortunately, I bought into far too many scam products, not deliberately, I was just keen to learn how to make money online. This was a very expensive way of learning, however, I was hungry to learn and I was trying my best! It took me almost 3 years to get my first proper money-making website up! The great thing about Wealthy Affiliate is the fact that what took me almost 3 years could probably be achieved in one week, almost! I was walking totally blind, I didn't know what worked and what didn't work! With Wealthy Affiliate you are given a plan to walk you through the correct way to build an online business.

Interesting enough, I made a sale on my website within 24 hours of going live. However, the site was professionally built so I was able to upload products and posts to the back office before the site actually went live. The site cost me precisely £2000 back in 2007, things are much different back then on the web. WordPress was relatively new and it was generally difficult to build a professional website unless you had proper knowledge of website building.

New Off-Line Business

In 2016, I set up a new business in the niche of stump grinding or tree stump removal. I had zero customers and quite an expensive machine to pay for. However, utilising the power of the Internet, the business grew really quickly. In fact, it's the quickest I've ever grown an off-line business. I don't say this to boast, but I say to encourage those of you working online as the Internet can be the businessman's best friend. All you have to do is literally go through the training at Wealthy Affiliate, step-by-step and grow your business.

I know that Wealthy Affiliate is generally about affiliate marketing. However, the principles taught here can be used for affiliate marketing or just promoting any type of business!

I always suggest to people who want to start an online business to make sure and have a job before they start! We all need money to live, unless you're privileged enough to live at home and have your parents pay for everything! Which isn't always as good as it first sounds!

I want to soon move into Internet marketing full-time as I know that given time I can grow my Internet business considerably quicker than what I achieving at the moment. I'm thankful that I am making money online, I know that there is plenty of room to multiply the business. I also know that the principles that we are taught here at Wealthy Affiliate work, we just need to take action.

It never fails to amaze me what can be achieved online, I actually find it mind-blowing. There are so many different ways that we can create revenue online. I guess that's probably another blog post and another subject!

Be encouraged, all things are possible for those who take action!

Thank you for reading.

Hi Roy, great article. It is interesting to read people's backstories.

I think I started with Windows 3.1 at work, although I may have used something earlier in the mid-80s. I seem to remember "Write" being the word-processing package I used.

And at home, I had an Amstrad PCW - which was really useful, whereas my even earlier Electron Acorn was only for playing games, which you loaded by tape! Sometimes repeatedly!!

So when Windows XP arrived I was pretty impressed!!.

All the best,

Julia

Hello Julia,

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog post and comment, it's appreciated.

I agree with you, it always fascinates me, it's interesting what people do for a living and how they started etc.

I cannot imagine what Windows 3.1 would be like, but I guess at the time, maybe it seemed quite clever or impressive.

Amstrad sounds like a famous old computer name, although I don't know anything about them. It's amazing how things have changed from tape to floppy disk, CD, to hard disk, to downloads etc.!

I hear you regarding Windows XP being fairly impressive after the other systems you had been using! I think the problem that frustrated me was the fact that a computer could do so much and yet with dial-up it was just painful! When broadband came along, for me it really changed everything, my PC became much more usable and I saw the absolutely massive potential that it could bring in!

It's funny, coming from the type of background that I come from, I never expected to have any interest in computers whatsoever! The subject used to bore me when people started talking about computers, now I'm the opposite! We never know 100% where we are going to end up in life!

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Roy

MindbloWing is the word indeed

Thank,you for sharing

🥳

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my blog post.

I think most of us have a story to tell, to be fair! I think that's one of the things that makes life interesting and has everyone has something to bring to the table and a story to tell. I wanted to try and encourage others who are starting out online.

Have a great day.

Roy

You as well Roy!
🤗

Thank you very much.👍👍

I like the advice of having a job before you start with IM. It definitely helps to have a stable base and some disposable cash to use with your websites.

However, working a job does add its own problems such as reducing the amount of time you can work on your website, being tired when you get home from work, etc. I guess everyone has their own obstacles they have to work through to be successful though.

From personal experience, I would take it one step further and say max out any retirement account contributions before using disposable cash on your IM business.

It’s easy to get sucked into buying a bunch of “shiny objects”. If you contribute to your retirement accounts first, then it gives you a backup plan if things in the IM world don’t go your way for whatever reason.

Good morning Thomas,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my blog post, it's appreciated.

I think it is good to have regular money coming in before you start an online business. As it does take time to build an online business. I appreciate if you have the money behind you to start an online business then that may be a different scenario. However, the majority of us don't!

I hear you, for many of us who are working full-time jobs or full-time businesses, time can be a problem. The way I have tried to overcome this is by normally getting up around 5 AM, sometimes it's before and sometimes after! I am better first thing in the morning, so this works for me. I appreciate that it may not work for everyone, my wife likes working late at night, we are all different!

That sounds quite a good idea regarding the pensions.

I'm afraid I have been sucked into the "shiny object syndrome"! To be fair, quite a bit of this was due to eagerness and enthusiasm of wanting to learn how to make money online! However, there was definitely some "shiny object syndrome" within me! Thankfully, I have been healed of "shiny object syndrome", it's a nasty disease if not treated promptly!

I really believe that anyone who joins Wealthy Affiliate can get from A to B far quicker than I did due to the excellent training and plan that they offer. Of course, the biggest thing is consistency and actually taking action.

Looking at your bio, Thomas, your story is slightly similar to mine!

Wishing you all the best and every success.

Roy

I’ve heard of other members doing the 5am thing to work on their online business. I’m definitwly more of a night owl, than a morning person.

I agree with WA having everything you need to be successful. There’s no reason to buy another courses unless there was specific training not already covered here and/or you’ve fully implementes the training here at WA.

I was buying courses and not even going through them which doesn’t make any sense. I guess it’s easy to get addicted to being sold “the dream” .

Hello Thomas,

Yes, the 5 AM works well for me, I know there are some other members who do exactly the same. However, we are all created differently, so we have to do what works for each of us. Allegedly, we are supposed to be more productive in the morning according to the boffins! However, different things work for different people!

Do you know your last paragraph refers to exactly what I was doing, I don't quite know why I was doing it! Although I could see the power of the Internet and really wanted to make it happen!

I feel with Wealthy Affiliate you can go at your own pace and not suffer from information overload! Sometimes we can learn too much but not actually take any action, which is no good for anyone! Wealthy Affiliate puts the training into sensible modules with sensible action points.

I'm sure I could learn more at Wealthy Affiliate in two or three months than I did in three years! One of the problems I had was that I didn't know what was genuine and what wasn't! We know that everything that is put up by the professionals here is genuine.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Roy

I remember Windows XP, Roy. I also recall my frustrations with Windows Vista - if anyone remembers that Operating System too. I can't remember how many blue screens of death I encountered on my desktop.

Good to see your humble beginnings from your first job to where you are today. I'm always interested in learning the different ways that people are making income nowadays. Thanks for the inspiring post!

Isaiah 😊

Good morning Isaiah,

I hope you're doing well. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my blog post, it's appreciated.

I must admit that I missed Windows Vista, was that the operating system that didn't have a start button or something major missing, I believe?! It sounds like I may have had a good miss!

Do you remember the error report boxes that used to come up many times within a day with windows XP? You could send a report to Windows on the error, I did hear from an accurate source that windows ignored the error reports, surprisingly enough! They would have needed a lot of people to cope with all the error reports.

Thank you, Isaiah. I always find it fascinating how people make a living, especially when it's online. I mean this in a very positive way.

Have a very good day.

Roy
