Don't Do What I Done! Install Windows In The Right Place!

I recently purchased a new Dell Precision desktop computer. Unfortunately, for some reason the system totally crashed and I had to reinstall Windows completely and start afresh, something that I have never done before.

It appears that Dell has a telephone support team in the Philippines who are reasonably helpful, although it's difficult to understand their accent at times! I was guided through the process of installing Windows and I thought all was well, however, there was an issue.

I subscribe to BT IT support manager which is available in the UK for any computer issues, they really are extremely helpful. Until the coronavirus, the service was available 365 days days a year, at any time. Although it's a paid service, for me, it can save me loads of time as they will put something right extremely quickly, far quicker than I could ever do. At the same time I am learning through watching the team. This is a UK based IT support, something that I can definitely recommend.

Recently, the BT IT support team logged into my desktop only to discover that I had installed windows onto the hard drive rather than the SSD drive! I had actually mentioned to the IT support man that the desktop PC took longer to start up then my laptop that has a traditional hard drive. He was highly surprised as a PC with an SSD drive should start up in seconds!

I don't actually remember having a choice of where to install windows as it is not something that I am familiar with. It's can be difficult when you are being guided through on the telephone on how to do something on a PC, especially when you have not carried out this process before.

The point of this blog post is to make sure that you do install windows to the correct drive and not waste time. I have one conventional hard drive and two ssd drives, I chose the wrong drive, although I don't remember having a choice!

So now I have the job of starting afresh and reinstalling Windows, this is far too time-consuming, as I need to start again! I normally try and set one day aside when purchasing a new PC, this time it's taken much longer!

Remember that we never stop learning!

Thank you for reading.

It can be a downer when you have a cool tool at hand but have to wait ages before you can use it. Hope it all works out soon Roy.

Good morning Carol,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, it's appreciated.

I hear you big time! I actually had it in the box for 2 to 3 weeks, due to my off-line business being busy. And then when I did set the PC up Dell had sent the wrong cables for the monitors! I actually made a point of asking Dell several times to make sure they sent the correct cables! It's difficult to use a desktop with no monitors!

I think the start to finish date will be six weeks since I ordered the PC to up and running, slightly too long in my mind.

Have a great weekend.

Roy

It's just a pity Roy. However I know that you will greatly enjoy it soon and make good use of it. Best of luck.
Carol

I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Thank you for taking the time to comment Lisa, it's appreciated. Hopefully, I will reload on Monday, I am looking forward to being able to use this desktop properly or to its full capacity.

Have a great day and enjoy sunny Spain.

Roy

I do IT through my own company so if you need help, let me know.

That said...

Do the install and custom... then delete all partitions on drive 0 and drive 1. The SSD should show up as Drive 0 and be smaller than Drive 1 which is your Data drive.

Tell the Windows Install to use Drive 0. Leave Drive 1 alone.

Drive 1 you will initialize and format once Windows is installed.

Good morning Matthew,

Thank you very much for commenting on my blog post, very helpful indeed.

Another question, I use a couple of programs which use quite a bit of power, like Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Camtasia, is it better to have these programs on the SSD drive for a better performance?

The PC has an Intel i9 processor and 64 GB of power, so it should be able to cope okay! I know Dragon definitely works better with a more powerful PC, hence my question.

Have a great day.

Roy

Yes. Install those apps to the C drive.

Thank you Matthew, your help is appreciated.

Have a great weekend.

Roy
