My Pinterest tips

I have recently spoken of the success I am starting to get with my Pinterest Reach. I don't have a huge account but have had success lately and people have asked what I have done. Firstly, I set up my account so that it looks pleasant when people look at it.

Set up your account properly..

1. Set up your profile properly. Name and a couple of descriptive keywords, in my case I added (blog | business) after my name.

2. Set up your bio properly. I added keywords to describe my activities.

3. Set up your banner so that it is full of your own pins. I added a board called banner, and save some of my pins here. Then changed the board from latest pins, to this board. You do this by clicking on the pencil icon on the banner.

4. Set up board covers for my boards. You must have a business account, and when you edit the board you will see where you can add a cover. My covers just make the board look a little more decorative.

5. Keyword stuff your board description. No-one except Pinterest reads your board description so don't pretty it up, stuff it with relevant keywords. Remember Pinterst is a search engine.

6. Reduce the number of boards that you have. I recently reduced them to about 30 as I was not posting to all of them regularly. For example I turned by boards - sun, nightsky, outerspace, lightning and clouds - into one board. Now I don't have to find 5 pins to keep them active. Pinterest doesn't like to see boards that are not pinned to regularly.

7. Set up Featured boards for your top 5. These will scroll across the top of the page, so make sure that they have your best pins on them.

Next step is to build up some followers.

Unfortunately, this step takes a bit of work, but once to get your first 1000 followers, it should start to snowball from there.

1. follow boards that interest you. You will need to seach by topic and use the dropdown to select boards.

2. Search by topic again, and find boards then follow the board owner. If you find a board with a lot of pins this is good. I then follow some of the board owners followers.

3. Look at pins in your home page and click on them. If they are a business account you will see a follow button underneath. Save the pin and Follow this person, you will often see recommendations underneath and up to about 20 similar profiles. Follow them. Spend a fair amount of time pinning others content, but make sure that if there is a website that is on the pin, you need to make sure it is good. I prefer to use pins that don't go to a website.

You will find that you can only follow about 100 and Pinterest will stop you from continuing, so it is best to do so 3 or 4 times a day.

4. When people follow you, follow back.

When building your followers, the more time you spend on Pinterest, the more Pinterest will reward you. Don't worry about pinning your own content at this stage, save it for when you have followers and are ready to move into the next stage.

Stop Growing and start consolidating.

When I reached 4000K followers, which took about 3 months after reaching the one K mark, I stopped following anymore. If people follow me that is great but I have stopped following back or seeking new people to follow. Since I have done this, my account has skyrocketed. In a matter of days, I have had an increase to around 100K monthly viewers. Yesterday was 100K, today is $140K.

For the past week, I have been only posting my own content with one or maybe two repins every couple of days.

I have pinned one blog post infographic and one picture alternatively. Most days I do about 3 or 4 of each. Sometimes if I get a chance I will do a second lot in the evening.

Pinning

1. When pinning your content always use a short description and relevant hashtags. I even include my own name as a hashtag. People can search by hashtag, and it tells Pinterest what your pin is about.

2. When pinning photos, add your website to the pin URL. (on desktop you can do this as you upload. On mobile you will need to save then edit. You will see the box to change.

3. You can add your own website to the pins if you wish, I did have my old website on some of these photos as well.

This simple picture has received incredible stats.

As you can see, nothing fancy, just a few words and some hashtags.

Every photo has my website in the actual description, You can do this and when those 27 website clicks went through, they went to my website. Of course this was not targeted traffic as my website is not in the dog niche. However, Pinterest is seeing that people are clicking on my pins and then then keep sharing them.

Here is another.

I have three or four others that are between 10 & 20K impressions. However, I also have a lot that only have a dozen or more impressions. They will not all make it to the top. At least I am getting some traffic to my wesbite.

Hope this helps you to build your own Pinterest profile. I know some people use tools like Tailwind to schedule pins. However, I have chosen not to do so and still have had success.

Have a wonderful day.

Thanks for sharing, very valuable information

I have no idea how to use Pinterest and I want to learn 😩

There are some instructions in the training. Bookmark this for reference when you get there.

I saved it in my inbox 😀

Many thanks for sharing this training, Kerry. It’s training for me, anyway. I’ve tagged this post so that I can refer to it when I reach the stage where I’m ready to open a Pinterest account.

Thank you again and best wishes,

Steve.

Ah thank you so much for your Pinterest tips, I’ve been wanting to know if anybody has had success without using Tailwind - fantastic! This what I’m trying to do - just what you’ve outlined. I only created my business account last month, it’s slow going but I certainly can see the potential already, think my numbers are good for where I’m at.

What do you think about promoting or creating an ad - to get some traction going? I’ve done this before, it’s the only way my own posts seem to get noticed, at this stage anyway. I’m guessing, I just keep with pinning my 12 - 15 pins a day, and I probably don’t need to advertise? As followers and traffic will continue to develop.

A very helpful article, thank you!

Shelley

Keep at it, as I said before you do need to build up a following. I am reluctant to follow back incase the momentum stops.

Hello,
What a wonderful way to start our day!!!!

We will be following you and excited to see you soar!
Many blessings are coming,

I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. I love it for my personal interests, but am struggling from a business point of view.

In the example of your dog pin stats, the 35k impressions are not the number of people who have seen it on your board, are they?

As it has been saved 35 times, people might have seen it on other boards and this counts towards the 35k figure. Is there a way of knowing how many times it was seen just on your board? What if it had been picked up by an influencer, and of the 35k impressions, they were responsible for 34,999 of them and only 1 came from your board?

Thanks for this, I will persevere with it.

Hi Diane, impressions is just the number of eyes that have seen it in their home page. It is a bit like television reach for an advertisement. It doesn't mean people looking to buy your message.
It doesn't matter whose board they see it on as my website is on the photo, when they hit visit, they go to my website. This is how I have been getting visitors to my website. A bit over a week old and getting between 20 & 30 hits most days.
The more people that you advertise to, the better chance someone will be interested in having a look.
We must remember that we are not selling a product that millions buy every day so our conversation rate is expected to be lower until we build ourselves a name.
Cheers
