So Grateful This Morning (Mainly About Our Move From Mexico to the United States)

I woke up early this morning, and for some reason I started thinking about the time that my husband Kelly and I returned to the United States after living in Mexico for five years. But it wasn't the years in Mexico that I was thinking about, even though they are full of mostly-happy memories.

It was how easily everything flowed when we made the trip back.

The move had been planned about a year before then. We had been visiting in Crestone, the small town in Colorado where we had lived for over twenty years, and a woman we knew was planning to sell her house later. We had a look at it and said we'd like to buy it after we sold our house in Mexico. That timing suited her, and I think we gave her a deposit. I do remember that we bought a king-sized mattress from another friend and stored it in her shed for the months till we came back. That gave the bed time to air out from its slight cigarette smell.

What I was thinking about as I woke up this morning was about as mundane as it gets. Where did we get the cardboard boxes for the books, kitchenware, pottery, and other stuff that we had to pack up after years in Mexico?

I decided that they must have come from the grocery store in a nearby town in Mexico, one that specialized in importing items that Americans would want to buy. They could have loose boxes for free, unless other people who were moving beat you to them.

When Kelly woke up, my first words to him were, "Where did we get the boxes to pack up our stuff in Mexico?" It took him a moment to wrap his head around my train of thought, but when he did, he agreed with me.

We both remembered clearly how our possessions got from Lake Chapala to Colorado. We had two American-plated vehicles with us, a small car (a VW Jetta) and a small motorhome (Toyota Dolphin). Between us, our two dogs, two cats, and essential items, we would fill those up. But some American friends of ours were planning a trip to Denver in their truck and they would be towing their large trailer, one big enough for at least a couple of horses. They were going north to bring the rest of their things to Mexico, and the trailer would be empty on the way north. They offered that we could fill it with our stuff to take to the US. We'd just have to pay for some of the travel expenses. The timing was perfect... they were planning to leave after we would, and our stuff would be secure in their trailer at their Mexican place in the meantime.

So we were able to bring back two large bookcases, a lovely marble table we had had made, a sofa, and some other furniture. We still have it all and enjoy the Mexican flavor it gives our house. It would have cost us too much to hire movers.

On the left here you can see half of the larger bookcase, among other things.

We sold our Mexican house easily as it was near the bottom of what expats would spend, even with its gorgeous yard and swimming pool. After all the paperwork, and paying for the Colorado house, we came out nicely ahead.

In one of my blog posts here about our cat Misty, I told the part of this story about how we drove to Colorado. That's in https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/rosanahart/blog/misty-wants-...

So back to this morning. I've just been filled with gratitude about how well things went back then. My gratitude spilled over to other times when life has just been so full of magical flow. Call it serendipity, call it an answer to prayer, whatever you want to call it, it sure can be magnificent!

Do you have favorite times in your life that make you feel grateful to remember?

I have many grateful times in my life, too many to count.

This post on moving is such an appropriate time for me. We just actually helped our son move from an apartment into his very first house that he is buying.

As we flew back home, I give thanks above for a smooth move, and for my son, whom I am so proud of.

When I got home, I thanked the Lord for safe travels to and from, and I thanked him for my bed, which I missed while I was away.

Moving is never fun, but it sure makes it nicer when things flow smoothly. 🙂

Yes, I call those great times and bad times blessings in many ways. Some bad times leave lessons we will always remember, and the good times leave sweet memories that put smile on our faces when we reminisce.

Thanks for sharing such a great story, Rosanna.

God bless you more,
Chuna

I have so many good memories of places I've lived and I've moved around a lot. I could write a book and generally I have been blessed. The bad times certainly overshadowed the good. They just made me stronger to more thoroughly enjoy the good times.

I remember you posted your house in Mexico. I liked the pool!

It is interesting how great things move and flow when the will is there. One does not even have to know-how, the why is more than enough, and doors just magically open.

I remember reading a National Geographic issue from back in the 60s back in the 80s of a family that spent the summer in Mexico Via motorhome. Every week they visited a new area, was a very interesting read.

I am grateful for my abilities, Covid 19 had me sitting on my buns for 8 eights, lost my home during that adventure. Yet here I am now with my own place and building a little sound studio in it, have more work than I can shake a stick at, and able to get my off-road gear ready for next month and King of the Hammers in February.

Keep us posted on your adventures, Cali.

Yes I do. I remember a time when I lived in the city and could barely afford to live.

I used to call that living one paycheck from the road.

I made the decision to apply for a promotion that would take me to live in the country. The government was providing travel and housing.

In many ways it was a life changing decision. I decided that if I lived in the city where bills were higher on that amount I would continue to do so in the country and save the extra I got from promotion. It required discipline because there is always a lot of things we would love to fill our homes with.

That decision took me several rungs up in terms of the security of my family, both physical and financial.

My boys enjoyed a type of childhood they would never have had in the city.
